kahnpro··on WeChat is Watching: Living in China with the app that knows everything about me
Sounds like you completely misunderstand what a police state is.

A police state does not require the police to be concerned with upholding the law. In fact there is usually a departure from the rule of law in police states.

As the other commenter mentioned, the police in a police state are usually concerned with maintaining order and protecting the power of the state or ruling faction, and policing people's behaviour to this end.

kahnpro··on The Fed stalls the creation of a bank with a novel business model
Why would a bank take deposits at all then?

I'm not saying you're wrong. It just seems like something is missing from the picture in your explanation.

When I opened my bank account, I deposited say £5000 cash. What does the bank do with this money?

I was under the impression that the bank doesn't actually keep this £5000 in cash, only £500 maybe, and uses the rest to lend money, but you seem to be saying that they can't actually use my deposit.

kahnpro··on The mysterious case of missing URLs and Google's AMP
From the perspective of a website developer, Google has a monopoly.
kahnpro··on Firefox about:config privacy settings
Because those features can involve uploading your browsing history to 3rd parties... does Microsoft check locally against malicious site lists, or does it upload every address you visit in order to tell you it's safe?
kahnpro··on Why we needed Redux in the past, and don’t any more
He's missing the point entirely. User interface programming is hard. And time-consuming. The discussion about client Vs server side is simply talking about where to shift this burden.
kahnpro··on FCC admits it was never actually hacked
In most cases the king didn't fund his own infrastructure, he convinced the people to pay for it.
kahnpro··on Social Media’s Dial-Up Ancestor: The Bulletin Board System (2016)
For one, it's easier than ever for the public to go all lynch mob-y on someone today and cut them off from society or otherwise ruin their life.
kahnpro··on If wages are to rise, workers need more bargaining power
He lives in the Netherlands.
kahnpro··on I Write Letters to CEOs
You're not a business systematically or regularly storing and processing personal data. Pretty sure GDPR doesn't stop you from e-mailing random people for personal reasons.
kahnpro··on Tesla that crashed in Autopilot mode sped up before hitting truck: police
The manufacturer should not be giving such unrealistic instructions in the first place. Everyone damn well knows that people will treat this like full autopilot. And everyone damn well knows that if you give people the chance to be a bit lazy and stop paying attention to the road, they will! Tesla knows what human behaviour is like.

We've been saying this from the beginning. This half-baked "autopilot" will only end in blood.

kahnpro··on Devices Which Track Cellphones, Intercept Calls Found All Over DC, MD, VA
Given that embassies are not actually foreign soil, if the offense was bad enough, US authorities will simply storm the place and make it stop.

But that's a drastic action that won't happen before many other options have been tried.

kahnpro··on Is capitalism a threat to democracy?
Without a government they can start to take this authority themselves in much the same way that local warlords do. Gradually by force, because they have power and you don't.

A small / weak government can't do anything to stop them.

kahnpro··on Learning Web Development? Skills to Make You Stand Out
And the insufferable genius often produces shit code anyway since he has no concept of how to work together with other humans / write code for teams.
kahnpro··on Introducing .app, a more secure home for apps on the web
No, Google. Just no.
kahnpro··on California Supreme Court Transforms the Test for Who Is an Employee
That's great if you're working as an actual freelancer. But most that I've seen don't get such freedoms.

Another good test is, are you allowed to subcontract your work or not?

kahnpro··on California Supreme Court Transforms the Test for Who Is an Employee
Honestly, most contracting developers are actually employees, and this position is just used as a way to skirt tax and labor laws. The abuse here isn't from the court, it's from devs and businesses.

Devs don't care simply because the pay is high enough and there are a ton of jobs available.

kahnpro··on California Supreme Court Transforms the Test for Who Is an Employee
Not so sure about the US, but having seen how contacting developers are working in Canada and the UK, I would say that contracting devs are almost always acting as employees.

In many tech companies you can't even tell the difference between who is an employee and who is a contractor, unless you ask.

kahnpro··on StreetLend.com shuts down, citing GDPR regulations
On the contrary I think that without any regulation, Google and Facebook are able to completely entrench themselves and take advantage of us all in the process.
kahnpro··on StreetLend.com shuts down, citing GDPR regulations
If your business model is based on something that will violate the GDPR, like streetlend selling user data to advertisers, then should you really be opening that business in the first place?
kahnpro··on StreetLend.com shuts down, citing GDPR regulations
This is usually how laws work. They specify minimum and maximum punishments for various offenses.

What part of this is a problem for you?

kahnpro··on Yanis Varoufakis: Marx predicted our present crisis – and points the way out
On the contrary, such companies don't deliver value. Their sole purpose is to extract value.
kahnpro··on Twitch plays Go
Can we get Twitch Vs AlphaGo? I would pay to watch that.
kahnpro··on Microsoft attempts to spin its role in counterfeiting case
They shouldn't. But criminal penalties? Jail time? Are you kidding?
kahnpro··on Microsoft attempts to spin its role in counterfeiting case
The fact that this is a criminal offense is what is right and truly fucked up.
kahnpro··on Don’t buy the MacBook Pros even on sale, in my opinion
So far I haven't had any problems with mine, purchased 4 months ago... knocks on wood
kahnpro··on Selling full autonomy before it's ready could backfire for Tesla
What's really scary about self-driving cars is that defects can be global.

One software bug can make every Tesla go into casual murder mode on a similar piece of road.

kahnpro··on Why doesn’t the IRS send me a tax bill based on the info they already have?
If you have things on the deduction side that the government doesn't already know about, you can submit a self-assessment or an amendment. Deductions themselves should be simplified.

You bring deductions up as if it's a problem but many other countries, like the UK, do it this way without problems.

Most people here do not submit tax returns.

kahnpro··on Why doesn’t the IRS send me a tax bill based on the info they already have?
There's no reason why they can't. If you're an employee and/or a student then everything you do should be reported to the government, taxes should have automatically been withheld, and the government should be able to figure out everything on their own. They always double-check your calculations anyway.

Only if you're self-employed or have special situations should you need to file anything, and even then, many of these situations can be something where you tick a box or submit a document and then they still do everything automatically.

The situation in the US and Canada is ridiculous.
