I've talked to the Hooks folks, and they have disaster recovery storage plan for their cheese spread throughout the country to survive various natural disasters.

The magic fairy dust is "really fast NVME" and "really low latency memory access" which for most users makes the 8GB give a performance comparable to slower 16GB memory (and not need to read from disk).

That's about it. If you're doing anything other than regular web browsing and word processing it's not going to be the same as having 16GB. But I'm certain the average Mac user is not a developer, video editor, or other power user.

Like it or not, tech nerds are not the average consumer of Apple hardware.

keep_reading··on A data corruption bug in OpenZFS?
bclones were only one way to trigger the corruption. This is not a good way to check.

It's also not worth checking for because this bug has existed for many years. Your data probably wasn't affected. None of the massive ZFS storage companies out there ran into it by now either.

Your data is fine. Sleep easy.

> but is it done by force?

Yes, of course. Do you really think most of these people even in the care of their own family would have complete agency over their lives? No, they'd be declared unfit and their Power of Attorney would be delegated to someone else.

You see all those homeless people? The tent cities? That's because they have nowhere to go anymore. A ton of those people are mentally ill.

Yes, those mental hospitals were terribly run. But we need to create a safe place for these people. We can't just give up because of mistakes made in the past.

> Vegans aren't a collective entity.

It's still human dominion over animals. And veganism is still veganism. e.g., don't tell me that "some vegans decide it's OK to wear leather" because they're not "a collective entity" or something like that. Veganism is very much a black & white ethos. There is no acceptable gray area for veganism.

keep_reading··on Volkswagen, Porsche, and Audi say they will use Tesla's EV charging plug
This is very true about 3 phase, but I have heard that there is interest in it being used in EU for AC charging in public garages because it can handle anything up to 277 volts vs J1772 which can only do 208/240. So they can give it 1 of the 3 phases @ 220V and it will work unlike J1772. Allegedly.

But I kind of doubt it will go anywhere when they've been forcing CCS2 on everyone.

keep_reading··on Volkswagen, Porsche, and Audi say they will use Tesla's EV charging plug
CCS2 is terrible, I'd hate to be forced to use that giant bulky connector and cable. The EU got it wrong. Design by committee always sucks.

Why do so many people think the economy is in a healthy position? Strong performance now means nothing. e.g., Department Store Sales 3-month average was $17B in 2008 and is now down to under $11B. It's a bloodbath. It has been steadily trending down since 2008.

"Bill Ackman warns economy will fall off a cliff if the Fed doesn't hurry and cut rates"

The Fed isn't going to cut rates for years. They're refusing to blink. These are Volcker-sized balls on JPow.

Any rallying now is squeezing blood from the stone. Any massive layoffs, sales, mergers, bankruptcies, or consolidations is hedging for the unavoidable cliff.

These are just smart, safe moves by corporations -- getting their affairs in order, per se.

And now the workers are going to suffer because they didn't organize labor when the economy was booming and they weren't feeling the pinch. Hopefully they learn this time and don't let the unions weaken if they want to avoid being battered and left for a cheaper workforce or replaced with automation.
