kermittd··on Harvard scientist is arrested, accused of lying about ties to China

kermittd··on Lambda School (YC S17) now pays eligible students $2k/month
Incredible opportunity! If I wasn't familiar with Lambda School it would be hard to believe. I think that shows just how good of a deal it is.

kermittd··on YC 120
Wow incredible start! I’m interested in developing products that help liberate students.
kermittd··on The Uncharity of College: The Big Business Nobody Understands
Thanks for the quick breakdown. Reading now...college is a subject I’m endlessly fascinated by.
kermittd··on [dead]
I upvoted the post because I’m interested in the topic. But is Trump actually helping China and/or pushing them to become better via a “trade war”?
kermittd··on INTERFACE Love. – Researching UI in Games, Cinema and Anything Else
awesome site!
kermittd··on Did Facebook’s faulty data push publishers to make terrible decisions on video?
I knew it! But seriously I’ve heard about this “ trend” for years but anecdotally most people I know don’t consume random videos on social networks.

Vids from friends?

That seems to be a different story.

kermittd··on Stellar + Pioneer: Play the tournament, get $6,000 in lumens
Very cool. I enjoyed the first tournament myself and am looking forward to entering the second!
kermittd··on Journal raises $1.5M to bring Google-like search to your personal life
Just read the article. Seems like an awesome product! I have two questions:

1. Can I get a code (dkermitt@gmail.com?

2. The landing page of Journal is great. How did you go about designing it?

kermittd··on How Twitter poisoned politics
Completely agree. People put to much blame on social media networks. Though I like Twitter and dislike Facebook they are not the core problem.

Great historical references as well. The Founding Fathers, though incredible people, were extremely partisan.

kermittd··on Valley Forged: How One Man Made the Indie Video Game Sensation Stardew Valley
That’s an incredible book. A bit off chapter but it’s a shame Obsidian can’t seem to catch a break.
kermittd··on Ask HN: Anyone from Google here? The new Gmail UI is painful
It is terrible! Seems to be no way to change it back.
kermittd··on Airware is shutting down after raising $118M
Hmm that's very interesting. Reminds me of what Netflix did to Hollywood but played out internationally.

China (Netflix) takes what the United States(Hollywood) doesn't want to do/finds little value in. Once China (Netflix) has a foundation of manufacturing know-how (media catalog)they move up the chain to more complex technical (media) products.

kermittd··on Show HN: Start a small crowdfunding campaign to prove product demand
Just submitted a project! What's next?
kermittd··on EU approves internet copyright law, including ‘link tax’ and ‘upload filter’
Whoa. Sounds like a paradoy of what foolish bureaucrats would do.
kermittd··on Asian-American Students Suing Harvard Over Admissions Win Justice Dept. Support
Definitely low hanging fruit nevertheless I think it is a small step in the right direction.

I would definitely like to see a more parental income based AA. Take the proverbial Black applicant whose parents are dentists, versus the proverbial Asian applicant whose parents emigrated and own a struggling restaurant.

Who would rank higher on the AA scale? We know the answer.

The other changes you mentioned are way more important, substantive, and difficult. How many parents (even those with great intentions!) would make the required sacrifices to see an equitable educational outcome for someone else's children?

kermittd··on The Student Debt Problem Is Worse Than We Imagined
Couldn’t agree more. Why should we help anyone by such destructive logic?
kermittd··on The Dark Reality Behind America’s Greatest Thrift Store Empire
O very interesting. At the particular store I worked there was a teenage “volunteer” working due to legally mandated community service.
kermittd··on Life expectancy declines seen in U.S. and other high-income countries
Yep. It seems the less you have more will be taken from you. I think industry’s cater to low wage earners know their customers have so few options.
kermittd··on The Dark Reality Behind America’s Greatest Thrift Store Empire
Regarding the tag line:

https://goodwillsp.wordpress.com/donate-to-goodwill/

Seems there are variations based on region.

kermittd··on The Dark Reality Behind America’s Greatest Thrift Store Empire
O and the sales culture regarding donations is quite distasteful.
kermittd··on The Dark Reality Behind America’s Greatest Thrift Store Empire
No not all. It’s why I said auschwitzean like.

O there is the corporate tag line. I think it goes improving lives through the power of work. I’ll get a source on that

kermittd··on The Dark Reality Behind America’s Greatest Thrift Store Empire
Glad to hear this come out. Worked at a Goodwill store for a summer. Involved lots of heavy lifting of furniture, strict managers, insane scheduling rationale, and auschwitzean like propaganda regarding the power of work.
kermittd··on False Advertising for College Is Pretty Much the Norm
Fair point about your experience but at the same time some people hate(ed) their formal educational experience and/or had to work constantly through college.
kermittd··on False Advertising for College Is Pretty Much the Norm
The fact that college can teach critical thinking I find highly suspect. Also when exactly does all the critical thinking skills "taught" activate?

Is it after my freshman year, going into my senior year, or only once I have that holy piece of paper (a college degree).

Regarding history...well historically colleges were for wealthy white men/the upper class.

kermittd··on California teacher pension debt swamps school budgets
Very interesting. The question that springs to mind; what is to be done?

Is it fair that teachers can’t afford to live in the districts they teach in? I think not.

Should districts have to cut activities ( sports, arts, etc) to pay for a pay raise? I think not.

But these examples ^^ are simple and possess less moral hazards than the issue of teacher pensions.

As far as I can tell teachers in California were promised a certain pension payout by politicans no longer in power. Should the present population subsidize the foolish promises of the past?

I think not.

But I know very(very) little about how pensions function so am curious how HN thinks we solve this crisis.

kermittd··on Show HN: Five Thousand Novels, Ranked by Vividness
Incredible concept! On mobile (ios 6s) the website needs some work.
kermittd··on UnusedCSS: Easily Find and Remove Unused CSS Rules
Haven't tested it quite yet but great concept! Definitely something I need to prioritize on my own side projects
kermittd··on Eric Weinstein on the crisis of late capitalism
I couldn't agree more!

I'm really disheartened at the pessimism that some HN members show towards people working low paying/status jobs.
