kittxkat··on Show HN: Simple Postcard – Send a photo postcard from a text message
The swiss post does allow you to send any picture as a postcard, even for free: https://postcardcreator.post.ch
kittxkat··on Online Dating and the Death of the 'Mixed-Attractiveness' Couple
Huh, kind of OT, but I had no idea that it's spelled Torschlusspanik. In Switzerland all I ever heard was Torschusspanik (as in "die Angst, den Ball rechtzeitig ins Netz zu bringen", which incidentally also makes the same kind of sense). Well, TIL.
kittxkat··on YouTube-dl: Open-source YouTube downloader
That sounds pretty interesting, care to share the code?
kittxkat··on Smartwatch firm Pebble lays off 25% of its staff
Man, this thing is so cool! Never ever heard of this watch before. This is exactly the kind of 'smart' watch I want: deliver some additional infos, without being obnoxious about it. I think I might just pick up one of these.

Edit: you happen to know if it has GPS or a step counter?

kittxkat··on Syntax Highlighting Off
I really like that colorscheme, care to share it?
kittxkat··on 'Music' from /dev/urandom
The example from /r/coding[1] is very nice to listen to:

    awk 'function wl() {
        rate=64000;
        return (rate/160)*(0.87055^(int(rand()*10)))};
    BEGIN {
        srand();
        wla=wl();
        while(1) {
            wlb=wla;
            wla=wl();
            if (wla==wlb)
                {wla*=2;};
            d=(rand()*10+5)*rate/4;
            a=b=0; c=128;
            ca=40/wla; cb=20/wlb;
            de=rate/10; di=0;
            for (i=0;i<d;i++) {
                a++; b++; di++; c+=ca+cb;
                if (a>wla)
                    {a=0; ca*=-1};
                if (b>wlb)
                    {b=0; cb*=-1};
                if (di>de)
                    {di=0; ca*=0.9; cb*=0.9};
                printf("%c",c)};
            c=int(c);
            while(c!=128) {
                c<128?c++:c--;
                printf("%c",c)};};}' | sox -t raw -r 64k -c 1 -e unsigned -b 8 - -d

kittxkat··on HN Pizza Index: Cost of living by city
Not quite. I live in Zurich Downtown, and you won't even find a Pizza Margarita for that price (17CHF). Its more like 22CHF (= $25) minimum. I've also lived in more rural areas in Switzerland before, and in those places 17CHF might be correct, but not for Zurich.
kittxkat··on Instacode
Wow, that looks really cool. Can we get a bit more background on how it works?
kittxkat··on Show HN: Demiba - Get the most out of YouTube music
Well, the best (read: cleanest/simplest, fastest, and best get-out-the-way approach) way to listen to music on youtube imho is: www.deskamp.com

Just put in the music you want to hear, hit enter, and it'll add the best match to your playlist. Dead simple.

Disclaimer: I am in no way affilated with them, I just enjoy their service.

kittxkat··on Why Marissa Mayer should acquire IFTTT and go all in on Yahoo Pipes
I don't really mind .gifs if used appropriate, like in this blog post of his http://jfornear.co/the-pinterest-layout-will-not-save-you where he (imho) also had a superior blog post design.
kittxkat··on Sol — a sunny little homemade virtual machine
Also his article on building your own little programming language is equally awesome. Probably going to be my next project, thanks for giving some pointers!

kittxkat··on Why Marissa Mayer should acquire IFTTT and go all in on Yahoo Pipes
That homepage design has to be the most distracting blog theme setting ever.
kittxkat··on Enhancements to Shell and Vim Productivity
What I did, for example, was that I enabled vi-mode in my shell but also re-enabled some emacs-keybindings like CTRL-E and CTRL-A for ending and beginning of a command because I learned them like a lifetime ago when I first got used to the shell without even knowing they were emacs-keybindings.

But that way I am also able to hit ESC and do a / for a search, like within vim, which I am much more used to than a search in emacs. I found that way combines the best of both worlds.

kittxkat··on Jiro Dreams of Sushi
Well now, that is anything but simple.
kittxkat··on Why Ratings Systems Don't Work
Fair point, I asked that myself. See ErrantX's answer[1] which IMO totally makes sense:

> Why would I care about rewatchability? Speaking as a film buff; this is actually quite a good guide to the sort of movie it is (when combined with quality). If lots of people mark it good quality, but wouldn't watch it again, that implies that you have to be in the right mood for it.

If people mark rewatchability high, even if the quality rating varies, you know it is much more easy going film.

And so on. Combining data points is good :)

kittxkat··on Ask HN: How do you Backup your Personal Files?
Also if one machine is not updated (due to no network, for example), the file still exists there.
kittxkat··on Show HN: Iorad - the tutorial builder
While I absolutely love your app, I think the name is horribly chosen.

It's just one of these names that doesn't stick (if not prominent enough) and can't be derivated of its purpose.

kittxkat··on Apple’s Ping to End With a Thud in Next Release of iTunes
I always wondered why Apple never aquired Last.fm, it's such a simple service and would've perfectly fitted within iTunes.
kittxkat··on HBO says no, for now, to fans who want a web-only option
Not if you live outside the US.

I honestly think that "unavailability" is the cause of 90% of pirating. Not because people don't want to buy stuff, they simply can't.

kittxkat··on Against live-tweeting at conferences
I can't help but feel that these people will someday look back and have great pictures of these events but no memory of them.

Not necessarily. I am going to a lot of concerts (~3-4 per month), and I take pictures with my phone because of my horrible memory.

If stumble upon the photo a few months later, it triggers most of my memories and experiences, but without this sort of "evidence" I'd be totally lost on the details from that evening.

edit: And, after all, wasn't that kind of the original purpose for a photograph? To capture an awesome moment you want to memorize?

kittxkat··on Show HN: Please belittle and insult my free online notes and textbook platform
This. Give the folks just a simple intro page (ie. "hey, this is what bookvoid is for!") and THEN show 'em the sample.
kittxkat··on Clipboard officially open to the public
I don't know how, but your Clip-bookmarklet totally killed my browser. Had to force-kill it. Chrome 18.

Will try the extension for now.

kittxkat··on Hello Downloader
This is why I love bandcamp (for example http://ohdaughter.bandcamp.com/).

The first couple of downloads (I don't know how many, maybe the first 100) of a track/album are usually free, and after that you pay for the music. So when you suddenly go all Lady Gaga as an Indie artist you get at least something out of it, but when nobody knows you the can have a free listen.

If the free downloads are out, you have to buy the music. Some artists have a steady price like 8-10$ per album or 3-4$ for an EP (which I find very reasonable and am totally willing to pay if it goes directly to the artist, and it mostly does!) and some let you choose the amount you want to pay for the music. And if that wasn't enough, if you have paid for the download, you get the audio files in almost every possible format existing.

Ah, bandcamp. Music distributing done right.

/edit:

Some more info: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bandcamp

- Pricing model: Set by artists

- Available audio formats are MP3, FLAC, AAA (aka .m4a), Vorbis and Apple Lossless and even more

- About 4 million songs online, including music from Sufjan Stevens, Amanda Palmer (Dresden Dolls) and Coer de Pirate, and game soundtracks from Minecraft, Machinarium and Plants vs Zombies

And last but not least: http://bandcamp.com/faq (yes, they do cover all questions who could possible arise)

(And no, I don't work for them. I just love them, as do many others: http://bandcamp.com/testimonials)

kittxkat··on The world’s two worst variable names

    > Of course it’s data! That’s what variables contain! That’s all they ever contain. It’s like if you were packing up your belongings in moving boxes, and on the side you labeled the box “matter.”
Nope, if he goes with that analogy that data contains data, the box should be labeled with box, imho.

kittxkat··on The world’s two worst variable names
Yes, but they are still horrible. They don't explain the use case or the context in which they're in.
kittxkat··on Rejected By VCs, Pebble Watch Raises $3.8M on Kickstarter
I think your answer is what crowdfunding is all about. Thank you.
kittxkat··on Tupac image performs at Coachella [video]
I was so pleasantly surprised I could watch with no problems from Switzerland.
kittxkat··on Ask HN: What is the best Keyboard nowadays?
I agree, especially in contrast with all those horribly overpriced "hacker"-keyboards. I've used it for 5 years now, and love it. My only complaint is that I wish it had no key pad as it takes up too much space between the typing keyboard and the mouse.
