Perpay | Senior Full Stack/Backend Engineer + Engineering Manager | Onsite in Philadelphia, Full-Time

Perpay, a certified B-Corp, is the most meaningful growth-stage startup in Philadelphia. We’ve spent the past decade growing from an early idea to achieving strong product market fit, and becoming one of the fastest-growing fintechs in the country as we march toward half a billion in revenue. Today, more than 500,000 customers rely on Perpay, and we are driven by this mission that meaningfully improves the financial stability of everyday Americans. We’re in a special moment of building, scaling, and deepening our impact, and are eager to find teammates that want to join us on the journey.

Our venture partners include First Round Capital and L Catterton.

We're looking for:

- A few Senior Full-stack or Backend Engineers across our 3 product engineering teams. We highly value product-mindset, experience building production web apps for real users, and ability to coach and support more junior engineers.

- A technically hands-on Engineering Manager. Ideally, you have at least a year or two of experience leading people and being accountable for a team's execution, roadmap, and performance. You would be the fourth "line manager" on our team, and so there's ample opportunity to grab org-wide initiatives that are interesting and impactful.

Our stack includes AWS, Postgres, Python/Django, React/Redux/Typescript, Datadog

Some other company notes / benefits: NYC-level total cash comp, meaningful equity, open PTO policy, full health/dental/vision with solid buy-up option, remote weeks around major holidays, high quality catered lunch 3 days/wk, 4% 401k match, cell phone plan, gym subsidy, and some student loan repayment match.

kmano8··on Ask HN: What software did you purchase that positively impacted your family life
Fantastical family plan, hands down.
kmano8··on Getting a job at Apple without going to college or doing LeetCode
This is my experience. Path in the door for every job I've had since I finished undergrad in the mid-aughts: - 1st job .. I answered a craigslist ad. - 2nd .. HN who's hiring post. - 3rd .. reached out to an engineer on the team on linkedin. - 4th .. referral from ex-coworker's partner. - 5th .. browsed the website of the VC firm that's funded a few of my previous companies, and I reached out to the CEO on linkedin.
kmano8··on Ask HN: Most interesting tech you built for just yourself?
http://whenisgoldenhour.com .. tech isn't particularly interesting, but it gets a decent bit of usage. Does a geoip lookup to tell you the golden hour time range for today. Inspired by my photography habit.
kmano8··on Ask HN: Anyone tired of everything being a subscription now?
> But most simply see increased TCO long term on product they are sort of 'stuck' with, in sense they have workflow and tool they are good at, fast, and understand it

This is my exact issue with lightroom. I have 9 yrs of edit history, and workflows setup + a mobile app that seamlessly imports everything from my phone into my main catalog alongside my "big camera" shots. If there was a competitor that migrated all of this cleanly, I'd be happy to modify my workflows to break out of the lock in.

kmano8··on Compare Webb's Images to Hubble
Though of course the pretty pictures really help with increasing the appetite from the public for spending on projects like this.. and capturing people's imaginations is a necessary part of the long game.
kmano8··on In-flight surgery with a coat-hanger and silverware
I am! Thank you. It's been almost 15 yrs .. I have a few scars from the chest tubes as a reminder. My lung capacity is normal. Every so often I get some numbness on that side when it's storming outside. In the couple years following, I did go through some hypochondria, thinking I had any number of related and unrelated issues. I've been advised not to scuba or go climbing Mt. Everest (ha!), though I do wonder if and when the other side could strike.
kmano8··on In-flight surgery with a coat-hanger and silverware
This happened to me in college. Driving home from the movies, chest started to hurt on inhale .. I decided to "sleep it off", which obviously didn't work. Went to the ER in the morning. Got the chest tube and spent about a week seeing if it would heal naturally, then they removed the offending part of my lung, and did a mechanical pleurodesis (a procedure that sticks your lung to the chest wall so it can't collapse). All-in, was over two weeks in the hospital, and a good bit of recovery after.

I fit the 5'9", young, male, otherwise healthy group described here.

kmano8··on I got an FBI record at age 11 from dabbling in cryptography (2015)
Ran a `netsend` once from the school library. Saw it pop all over everyone's screens, and immediately :homer:'d out of there. Unfortunately don't remember the text I sent.
kmano8··on Poll: Why are people leaving their jobs?
Yeah- I'm guilty of this, and try to ask something like "what are you into right now?"
kmano8··on Once poor, always poor?
Not necessarily. The market will ultimately dictate what a landlord can charge for rent .. if that includes their cost of repairs + taxes, good for them. It's by no means a guarantee, and landlords can go through periods of being cash-flow negative on a property.
kmano8··on Toyota owners have to pay $8/month to keep using their key fob for remote start
Acura also charges an annual fee for remote start -- though it's through an app vs. fob.
kmano8··on How to spot a good fake ID
Run for it Marty!
kmano8··on Kids need freedom, too
It's a common American (but maybe elsewhere too?) attitude to feel something is being taken from you when another person is gaining -- in this case, it's you moving efficiently through traffic while they stand still. Most people will just rage inside their car, but there is definitely a subset of those that think they have a right to harm you over it.
kmano8··on Bitcoin Blockchain Visualization
Also the MS Excel simulator Easter egg.
kmano8··on Questions to ask in a job interview that reveal company culture
I've been asking this positive/negative in the form of "What keeps you at $COMPANY?" and "What did you find out isn't so great about $COMPANY after 3 months you wish you would've known before you started?"
kmano8··on Venice combats overtourism by tracking visitors
Was in Venice summer 2017, and having never been prior, my wife and I were surprised at how empty it was after 5pm. How could this be? It was wall-to-wall people all day -- many in tours that would sometimes just stop in the middle of a narrow corridor. We realized what this and all the other articles about Venice tourism describe -- that most tourists only come for the day.

The evenings and nights there were the best part of the day -- not only because the temp dropped, and the light was beautiful -- but because it became an entire different city without the droves of people. It became trivial to sit down at random restaurants and find quiet.

It's a good start they're going to start charging for entry to the island for the sake of the residents and preserving the city. Though not sure they need all this infra for tracking within the island itself to accomplish their goals.

kmano8··on If it will matter after today, don't talk about it in a chat room
Eh, for the golden path, sure (say, having a service documented).

Slack search for <insert error name here> is high-value in historical context that's tough to replicate elsewhere. All at once, you learn if anyone's ever asked about the error before, and if so, see the conversation on resolution.

kmano8··on 'Exercised' Explains Why It Can Be Hard to Commit to Working Out
Likely they're referring to soda.
kmano8··on M1 Macs: Truth and Truthiness
The distinction here is between "fast" and "fast_er_". It isn't that it can't run faster and hot (because of course it could) .. but that it's able to achieve fast performance relative to the competition without having to get "hot".

kmano8··on Relentlessly Simplify
I wonder if Ben's gotten that feedback frequently, and just canned the retort over time.
kmano8··on Young Homebuyers Are Vanishing from the U.S.
Not only that, but the abatement being attached to that property inflates its selling price.
kmano8··on Young Homebuyers Are Vanishing from the U.S.
I put down 5% a few years and was able to avoid PMI by taking a higher rate (about 5%) -- forget what doing this actually called. You can take the increased interest as a deduction, but not PMI.
kmano8··on U of Chicago projected to be the first U.S. university to cost $100k per year
It looks like the parent went to a different school than UofC.
kmano8··on Show HN: Duple – Private cloud at home
Somewhat related- I've gotten a lot of mileage out of using Cryptomator (no affiliation) with iCloud to have access to encrypted documents across devices without having to worry about the pain of self-hosting. Here's a blog post I wrote about it https://karlshouler.com/posts/2019-05-31-secure-cloud-storag...
kmano8··on Besides HN, where do you go for your latest news?
List of twitter accounts I've curated over time. Way to much overhead if you're looking to dive straight into something though.
