konspence··on &udm=14 – easy access to an AI-free Google search
I have a personal distaste for the multi-syllable word in the headline. I acknowledge that may be a 'me' thing, though I do have reasons which are off-topic.

But seeing it prominently displayed on the homepage of this site is offputting, regardless of my feelings about the word in general.

'Live' implies realtime data, this is based on schedules.
konspence··on Apple Considered Switch to Search Engine DuckDuckGo from Google
Indistinguishable from Bing because aside from the 'instant answers' they provide, DuckDuckGo leans very heavily on Bing, per their FAQ: [1]

> Of course, we have more traditional links and images in our search results too, which we largely source from Bing.

konspence··on Google Maps has become an eyesore
I already know where I’m looking.

And the map TOS state it should be the business name.

I pointed this out as a UX problem, which it is.

konspence··on Google Maps has become an eyesore
I would add to this article that a major issue with Google Maps has been businesses trying to SEO-pad their business names on Google Maps, to the detriment of readability.

This is also against their TOS – the "business name" form is supposed to be their legally registered business name, the one that they probably have signage for. Moderators simply don't enforce this, and with Map Maker basically gone, the community of moderators is somewhat of a cloak and dagger group now.

I have tried to clean some of these up via submissions, because in spite of agreeing with the points of the article and using mostly Apple Maps for navigation, Google Maps still is better in terms of having a lot of community sourced data and overall place discoverability (along with Yelp, which Apple Maps seems to no longer source data from).

Examples of these business names:

- {name} - {city name} Axe Throwing

- {name} License Agency - (Vehicle/Vessel not drivers license)

- {name} - Lunch Buffet (Friday-Sunday) - {cuisine} Restaurant - {city name}

And many now have:

- {name of a local chain} - {neighborhood or city name}

Some of this is a UX problem or perhaps data architecture problem – in the case of local chains, I imagine many are dealing with people calling in orders and showing up at the wrong place to pick up their order. Google Maps could do a better job showing the neighborhood/locality/"local name" of the area in the search results.

Others are just a lack of consistent moderation.

konspence··on I/O 2022
I tried this and I'm wondering if anyone involved in this project was around when Space Cadet Pinball dropped, on Windows 95 in 1995. Because this is like a parody of that.

It took 10s to load on my M1.

konspence··on Ask HN: Beating depression with or without anti-depressants?
I suspect some of these are meant to get a rise, but I'll bite.

> + Commuting

Prior to 2020 this was the vast majority of all jobs, including tech. Most got by just fine. And today still encompasses the majority of jobs, so I would argue this is classist.

> + Neglecting talking to family

Many people have reasons not to talk to family that end up with positive mental health outcomes. Sure, it can be negative, but this seems exclusionary.

> + A certain age without kids

C'mon. This isn't the 1940s.

Please be careful when putting out lists like this.

This is juxtaposing genuine, universal indicators of depression alongside subjective ones, which when read by the wrong (misinformed, uncertain, etc.) audience, could lead to adverse outcomes.

konspence··on Is nuclear power our best bet against climate change?
False dichotomy of saying we have the consequences of climate change OR we have a few Chernobyl like incidents.

We don’t need to choose between these options. We can avoid climate change without nuclear energy

konspence··on Finland lobbied EU to declare nuclear power sustainable
There are many arguments against nuclear and they aren't going anywhere. I find myself in the middle, I hope that renewables can displace all other power modes, but also find nuclear enticing for base load.

What stops an economic powerhouse like the EU:

- engineering and design costs are insane for new nuclear plants

- waste is also probably expensive given a largely urbanized continent

- solar and wind plummeting in costs, as well as batteries (yes, I will admit this is counter to the previous point as solar/wind occupy more space than waste storage)

- potentially, a stigma associating nuclear energy with former incompetent governance

- not all of EU (or world) is in a geographically stable region, i.e. resilient against earthquakes, which would balloon the cost of a safe nuclear power plant

konspence··on Finland lobbied EU to declare nuclear power sustainable
I see your point, but eventually the solar panels produce the energy to produce more solar panels. Including the mining

IIRC there is a formal guidance for what is classified as renewable. Things like oil, while originating from biological matter, obviously being considered 'not', while tree mass, plant mass, being considered so. Believe the guidance was whether the carbon emitted in its production has been or could be absorbed within a lifetime, via the means with which it was produced.

I have reservations with nuclear but I imagine it would fit within those guidelines easily.

konspence··on Climate change: IPCC report is 'code red for humanity'
Please share.
konspence··on Climate change: IPCC report is 'code red for humanity'
Thanks, good call out. This was largely based on some charts from An Inconvenient Truth which showed temp as a latent responding variable to CO2 PPM.

Obviously a lot of research has happened since then, so I looked it up, and the lag period between CO2 and temperature rise is much shorter than I expected. It seems it is just a decade - so if we went to carbon negative today, we could see results in under 10 years [1] [2].

Kind of unclear if the baseline carbon we could achieve will result in YoY decrease in temperature, given the feedback loops and it already raising temperatures every year.

If the research you mentioned is predicated on massive carbon takeback then I am highly suspicious. The public sector doesn't have the will, and the private sector doesn't have the incentive.

konspence··on Climate change: IPCC report is 'code red for humanity'
This year has proven that climate change isn't just a long term problem.

Manhattan was engulfed in smoke from the west coast. People were flooded out of their homes in Western Europe. And heat waves across the west coast lead to dozens of deaths.

I'm probably missing things happening in Asian countries due to consuming western media.

We can look at our response to Covid as a model for how we might respond to climate change slapping us in the face. If that is a fair comparison, I am worried.

konspence··on Climate change: IPCC report is 'code red for humanity'
There's nothing to "keep" under 1.5C, we are pretty much already there when error bars are considered. 2C is going to be breached regardless because even if we went carbon neutral today we have decades of locked in warming.

Why the scientists are not communicating this information which has been in pop-science (as early as An Inconvenient Truth (2006), which documents the lag between CO2 rise and temp rise) is beyond me.

I still advocate for mitigation/reduction efforts because future generations exist and they deserve the best climate we can pass on, but let's not pretend like we are on track to preserve any level of normal. 1.5C is more than a moonshot - it is behind us.

A dark but predictable outcome is that they will eventually burn down, and insurance companies will be afraid of covering new development in these areas. After which point controlled burns can again occur

Should be ‘kebab’

konspence··on Boeing Fought Lion Air on Proposed Max Simulator Training Requirement
This whole thing looks like a disaster. As other commenters are pointing out, even if the pilots did the MAX simulators, would they have been trained to respond to the AOA failure? Unlikely.

It seems like Boeing completely missed serious cases on the testing of the plane, and is hoping that the "UAT" phase (simulator training) would have uncovered the issues.

But UAT never underwent the condition of an AOA sensor failing.
