I’ll work very hard and on the cheap if you can actually prove your company gives a shit about QA.

Did you know 0 is not simply the number between -1 and 1? That also is irrelevant when teaching the masses! I don’t mean this to be snooty, but I hope it illustrates my point that you can emphasize something which will work extremely well for everyone in every day life.

You’re right that there are extremely rare exceptions (though even official sources like Purdue OWL and Chicago manual of style disagree on the finer points), but I will keep telling everyone you never, ever use it for plurality. I would be much happier seeing people type “there should’ve been WotLKs for users to choose between” than “I had three burger’s” on the very rare chance I see the former. I hope you’ll join me!

So we shouldn’t worry about regressing? This is also true of science, hygiene, human rights, and about a dozen other things we would be alarmed to lose, even if they were only around for people living in a “massively privileged position in time”
kulahan··on The typo generation is damaging literature
I would like to posit that as grammar dies, we execute the apostrophe first. Somehow, despite the simple rule of “this is never EVER used to show plurality”, it is almost exclusively used for that these days.
kulahan··on How octopuses squeeze through too small gaps
Consciousness maybe, but intelligence is a given. Amoebas can transfer memory and intelligence no problem simply by meeting and combining
kulahan··on Download your favourite YouTube videos
Just to be clear, they've named the subreddit after a mental disorder, which I think sorta proves his point :P
kulahan··on Download your favourite YouTube videos
I didn't used to think this was so obvious, but I'm so annoyed with the absolute frequency of ads on chromecast that I'm about to try and force my chromecast to look at some local jellyfin server or whatever and just pre-download every video I want to watch.

That being said, up until literally a week or two ago, I had a data cap of 1.3TB/mo. It'd take me a while to hoard much data after all of my normal data usage. If you stream a lot of video, 1.3TB is shockingly little.

kulahan··on Supermarket freezers across Europe hit by second suspected cyber-attack
I thought this conversation was over, but then I saw attacks had moved on to fridges storing blood in hospitals. This is an insanely important update to this conversation, should anyone happen across it.

It took no time at all for this to become deadly.

kulahan··on Postman silently auto-installs AI plugins and attempts to share all API data
Yes I know, and I’m purposely not giving it time because it’s a modification of the argument I’m making. As such, I’m giving him a choice between the two things I actually said and actually meant to keep the conversation on track.

If he wants to go and divide the stock market up between international and non-international companies to keep score for his own purposes, he is welcome, but it’s unrelated to the conversation he entered.

kulahan··on AI is forcing us to pay off 40 years of technical debt
You should try AI out, it’s a lot more capable than it was when most people formed their opinion a few years ago.
kulahan··on AI is forcing us to pay off 40 years of technical debt
A mostly useless platitude since the solution is to simply not include only terrible reviewers as 100% of your staff in 100% of situations.

That people are born every day, or that global population has increased?
kulahan··on Safari introduces Adaptive Dark Mode in 27.3
So I guess it hasn’t been supported anywhere in a sense.

Safari and Firefox are pretty small.

It’s basically wondering why your sales aren’t going up when there are still customers to be found. Even if you saturate a market, new people are born every day, at a greater rate than they die, so one would assume you grow or fade, unless customers just like… stop buying things in a category for some reason (maybe a superior category was invented?)

The problem isn’t infinite growth in a still-growing world, it’s exactly what you posted here: Growth at all costs. The pendulum has swung too hard in favor of growth over stability. This is great for shareholders (read:everyone in America who wants to realistically retire one day) but bad for workers (read: everyone in America, regardless of whether or not they want to retire one day).

kulahan··on Practice speaking Japanese with real YouTube videos, graded line by line
Wouldn’t AI be, by definition, better at translating than even a dictionary? I guess I don’t know if that translates to teaching, however.
kulahan··on Practice speaking Japanese with real YouTube videos, graded line by line
Immerse yourself as best as possible. If you’re learning Japanese, watch anime and J-dramas. If you’re learning Spanish, shop at local Mexi-marts and watch Telemundo. This was the game changer for me.
kulahan··on Supermarket freezers across Europe hit by second suspected cyber-attack
It’s some frozen food, it’s not botulism in the rice. It’ll be hard to convince people of how big of a deal this truly is.
kulahan··on Supermarket freezers across Europe hit by second suspected cyber-attack
Security and convenience are diametrically opposed and stores are specifically built around convenience. I’m not sure it’s obvious at all what the right cutoff level is.
kulahan··on Ask HN: Which TV do you recommend for privacy?
This is kind of an annoying platitude until you provide some vote that's worth casting. Who do you think we can buy from for a high quality, modern, privacy-oriented TV if you're so confident that it's just a matter of voting with your wallet rather than buying the device that lets you do what you want to with a bit of finagling?
kulahan··on Cisco gives engineer unlimited AI tokens to rewrite legacy code
I don’t think your point is meritless, but this is specifically a discussion about that top-10% dev. The one doing this type of work is not the one who will be let go.
kulahan··on Cisco gives engineer unlimited AI tokens to rewrite legacy code
This has nothing to do with what he’s talking about. He’s talking about using it to learn additional info about what he’s writing. You posted a pretty boring video about someone who cannot do anything except push buttons on AI, concluding that somehow board members and CEOs will, I guess, do 15000 employees’ work now.

As a side note, it’s funny that someone who clearly dislikes AI couldn’t get their idea across without using AI

kulahan··on Cisco gives engineer unlimited AI tokens to rewrite legacy code
The subscription didn’t do any work though. It didn’t magically create a new knowledge worker any more than a lawn mower in a shed cuts grass. The output of the labor massively skyrocketed in value. If you fire that dev, who do you think will use Claude?

This instead is a concern for newer devs. There is now no argument for bringing on the cadre of workers you’d need to do all the hand-jamming, testing, and reviewing, learning how to code in the process.

kulahan··on How do you take a picture of a black hole?
I never thought about this, but I guess it makes sense. What an insane thing to consider - one more reason for to love neutron stars.
kulahan··on Show HN: Overtone – Transcribe, correct and cut captions for any screen shape
I have no idea what’s going on, but modern subtitles are suddenly TRASH. All kinds of misheard words, it really feels like they removed all human oversight, or reduced it so significantly it’s just impossible to actually read it all for whatever crew works on this.

I only glanced through capabilities, so apologies if I simply missed this, but I am begging you to ensure there is some kind of system for translating foreign text on screen - most ideally, in a slightly differentiated font.

So often someone is walking by a sign in some other language, and their comments on it are translated, but the sign is not! I just watched Sai on Netflix, and it changes to a bright red screen with white text near the end of most episodes. I think it’s introducing the credits but I have no idea. It was just 30 seconds of Japanese text.

And to take it to the other absurd extreme, you’re not going to throw away all foods that aren’t kept in a sterile vacuum until the moment it’s consumed… are you?

I’m arguing against being overly-concerned with hygiene to the point that you cannot even handle touching everyday objects without a significant disgust factor. You’re talking about licking toilets. Come on bro.

kulahan··on MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR Display and Touch
We do, all the time, by simple manner of eating foods that are exposed to air.

But if you’re asking if we should try to cram more than usual in there, I couldn’t tell you. I’m not an immunologist, so I don’t know how easy it is or is not to overload it, nor if it even works for all types of contagious infection agents. Some are probably highly resistant to gastric environments.

kulahan··on StackOverflow now gets fewer than 1000 questions a month
I really do love their other communities so much more. Lots of super interesting content - it feels like a new digg or something. I go to one of the other stacks and look at the most popular non-tech stack posts once or twice a week purely for entertainment. The breakdowns on obscure but interesting topics can get really fun to read!

Most of your immune system training occurs in the stomach where, predictably, an absolutely enormous amount of foreign matter enters your body. This is standard medical teaching.
kulahan··on Why is this fingerprinting script creating bioweapons?
I think that’s correct. This isn’t an actual weapon. It’s just talking like one to trick LLMs.
kulahan··on Solar power is becoming bigger than nuclear
Yeah and they’re all terrible. Why do you think nobody is building energy storage at massive scale? Don’t be silly.
