kumaraman··on Panic’s Next Editor
They mention they're not trying to be the biggest code editor, and I think they have a fighting chance against Webstorm.

Also they can create a plugin system similar to Sketchapp that exposes a JavaScript API.

kumaraman··on Formally Specifying UIs (2018)
I assume the "set of specifications" is normally provided via some sort of project tracking software like Jira. A problem with this is these specifications get lost in history, not to mention become outdated as the features evolve.

From my experience having well a documented code base allows you to understand decisions at a later date, especially when key members have left the company.

kumaraman··on Sample cloud-native application with microservices
Interesting, in my experience we've never had major issues with our service mesh or internal networking. It definitely introduces a lot more complexities. I suppose we've always had a dedicated devops team so I'm probably unaware of a lot of these issues.

I'd be interested in some resources around this topic if you know of any.

kumaraman··on Sample cloud-native application with microservices
I've never been able to make sense from including more than one aggregate root in a bounded context. What are your thoughts?
kumaraman··on Sample cloud-native application with microservices
That works well in your current situation, but when you have multiple products and services that also need to send emails it makes sense to combine them into a single service.
kumaraman··on Sample cloud-native application with microservices
Depends on the scale of this online store, if it saw 0.1% the amount of traffic as Amazon then it is justified.
kumaraman··on Sample cloud-native application with microservices
The ClusterIP and LoadBalancer are on separate network interfaces. The ClusterIP exposes the service on an internal interface whereas, the LoadBalancer exposes on a public interface.

kumaraman··on Sample cloud-native application with microservices
When a company and platform grows it's very common to build out an email sending service since you can only send so many emails per second.

An example of an email sending service is Sendgrid, who have built an entire company around this service.

Domain driven design from Eric Evans is a great resource for learning about how/where to separate out services.

You will learn about how to model complex domain models and how to decompose them into Aggregate's. The Aggregate is the key to where to create new microservices, as each aggregate should only contain domain objects that relate to itself.

Payments is a great example of an Aggregate.

I feel like this was a part of a chrome experiment in the early days of html5.

There is a page on the site that can help you with this https://www.dnsleaktest.com/how-to-fix-a-dns-leak.html

I am very curious to how exactly they made these animations! Surely they didn't hand type all of the transforms.

I see a lot more of similar animations appearing on the internet.

Are there tools that people use to help with the animations?

> inspired by the apple website

My first thoughts when loading the website were "Is this an Apple project?"

It's uncanny how similar the design is to Apple's website. It's crazy how much a brand can monopolise a market just from an aesthetics point of view.

kumaraman··on F.lux major update
Using location is more accurate as depending on how far away from the equator you are light levels can change drastically.

This covers some of the details around it: http://www.ccfg.org.uk/conferences/downloads/P_Burgess.pdf

kumaraman··on Why I’m dumping Firebase for Web
In the server-less section you stated:

> "You are forced to do everything client-side"... "including your SECRET SAUCE"

How I see it is the "static content" (which I assume is a SPA) shouldn't contain anything more than the conditional logic to decide when something should be rendered or retrieved from/ sent to the server.

If the "SECRET SAUCE" you are referring to is the conditional logic, then you shouldn't worry as this can already be derived purely from interaction with the UI.

kumaraman··on How a CEO with Dyslexia and ADHD Runs His Company
I probably should have used a better example, I just did a quick google search and saw that.

The one I use often is John Britten but no one knows who he is nor was he a CEO.

I second this, seeking treatment definitely helps with learning to manage the disability. It seems weird describing it as treatment, I would call it more of a suppressor because once they wear off it comes straight back.

One of the best things to deal with ADHD is early recognition as it can cause them to fall behind everyone else. Quickly.

It's interesting though, not everyone knows exactly what it means to have ADHD or what it implies. Because of this, it isn't necessarily the best thing to tell your teachers either because they can start treating you differently. So I suppose the process of overcoming ADHD can heavily rely on your parents and how able they are to give you the extra attention and time you need.

kumaraman··on How a CEO with Dyslexia and ADHD Runs His Company
I don't understand why this is a big deal, people seem to think disabilities (not limited to ADHD nor dyslexia) are barriers.

People learn to overcome all sorts of disabilities all the time.

In my opinion, this article shouldn't single out that ADHD and dyslexia as a limitation, in a way you can say the contrary, that it's what made him where he is. I'm sure Steve Jobs wouldn't have been as successful if he didn't have dyslexia.

Yeah, I've done this countless times, only realising once I have packaged it into my project. I ended up creating a Webpack loader which takes a small JSON file and creates an icon set for my project. I could consider releasing it on Github if there is interest in something like this?

kumaraman··on Ask HN: How do you back up your site hosted on a VPS such as Digital Ocean?
I use AWS S3 for this as the storage prices are so cheap, at $0.03 per GB. I recommend using a utility called s3cmd, which is a similar to rsync, in that you can backup directories. I just have this setup with a batch of cron jobs which dump my databases and then sync the directories to s3 weekly.

My thoughts exactly, there are even NodeJS Jupyter notebook projects.
kumaraman··on A SoundCloud client in React and Redux
I originally tried this but then discovered combineReducers() this will allow you to organise your reducers into a single import. I found it a more sane way to organise all of my reducers, as the majority of them were small. Here's a link for API http://redux.js.org/docs/api/combineReducers.html

I have to agree with you, I am dyslexic and found this not much more difficult to read than normal text. I find when reading I will stare at words in sentences knowing what they say and what they mean but not knowing or being able to understand the meaning of the sentence overall. I will often re-read the sentence over and over and end up moving on not understanding what it means, just knowing certain words were mentioned.
