Article says "SpaceX collisions up 200 percent", but it is actually "conjunction risk mitigation manoeuvres[sic]" that are up 200 percent. These are active maneuvers to avoid collisions.

I was interested in when computers started showing up. I flipped through some years quickly. I see a terminal on page 158 in 1984 ('84:158). What looks like an 8-bit computer at '85:103 and a Mac at '86:190. Anyone see something earlier?

This could be a game. When was the first flat screen TV? When was the first CD rack? When was the first microwave?

There is a record player at '20:156. Did record players go away and then come back?

There are at least two typewriters in 2020 ('20:56 and '20:61). I wouldn't have expected typewriters in a 2020 catalog. Maybe that's a Swedish thing? Are typewriters still common in Sweden?

To be clear, PBS is showing the 30-episode show that was made in China. It's different from the Netflix series that just came out. I plan to watch both.

The whitepaper actually says that 28% of Japan is over 65.

Maybe 75% is a misunderstanding of the "Old-age dependency ratios 1950-2050 in the 19 countries of study" chart. That shows that in 2050 Japan will have 74.32 people over 65 for every 100 people between 15-64.

"Overall, do you strongly favor, somewhat favor, somewhat oppose, or strongly oppose the use of nuclear energy as one of the ways to provide electricity in the United States?"

I think that’s the most likely successful outcome.

1) human mind can be simulated

2) human consciousness is totally dependent on physical connections of brain neurons

3) something like nanobots are able to determine the frozen brain connections despite the damage of being frozen

4) some organization is curious enough to do the work to bring you back

5) live your second life, hopefully in some type of humanoid android and not your great-great-great-grandkids PlayStation 25

The likelihood of all of that happening is probably pretty low. But you have 0% chance of coming back if you don’t get frozen.

95.2 is the "maxi" file. 49.48 is the "nopic" file. 13.39 is the "mini".

From https://www.kiwix.org/en/documentation/

File size is always an issue when downloading such big content, so we always produce each Wikipedia file in three flavours:

Mini: only the introduction of each article, plus the infobox. Saves about 95% of space vs. the full version. nopic: full articles, but no images. About 75% smaller than the full version Maxi: the default full version.

Excel only stores 15 significant digits. Once you get to the 16th digit you'll just get a zero.

Example: 6,190,283,353,629,370 + 1 will still be 6,190,283,353,629,370. 6,190,283,353,629,370 + 10 will be 6,190,283,353,629,380

The Hill site is wrong.

The ACLU Pat Toomey is Patrick C. Toomey. Picture of him here: https://www.justsecurity.org/author/toomeypatrick/

The Senator is Patrick Joseph Toomey Jr.

Maybe the Hill automates scanning the bylines and adds links to bios. Obviously it isn't perfect.

Unexpected Seinfeld

Somehow I think Elon giving himself a multi-billion dollar salary to cover a jump in Tesla stock would upset a lot of people.

I did some googling and it does look like some companies will let you exercise early but not let you take possession until vested. https://carta.com/blog/exercising-stock-options/#what-is-ear...

Good catch. I missed that they were NSOs.

I'm not sure if we were able to purchase before vesting. I'm assuming if you left the company the money for any unvested shares would be refunded?

True, but you also have to wait for your options to vest. I did make the mistake of waiting too long. With a 5-year vesting schedule it's possible to still get a stiff tax for the last few years.

This is one area where I think the company didn't make the consequences clear. But I also understand that they were trying very hard to not appear to be giving tax advice. Also, my company specifically asked us NOT to do small purchases. I guess there were people doing monthly exercises with each paycheck and the company didn't like that (it wasn't forbidden, just frowned upon).

Dirt cheap options can be very expensive. The AMT tax can kill you.

The article is 4 years old. I'm not saying it was a smart move, but at the time he would have had to pay taxes that he might not have been able to afford. I know people that left SpaceX options on the table because they couldn't afford the taxes.

A lot of people here are assuming COUNTRY1 is an adversary. I'm going to guess India. It's plausible to think that India would love to be able to build nuclear submarines with equivalent technology to the Virginia-class. It isn't crazy to think they might be willing to pay money for secrets. But it's also equally plausible that they would immediately tell the US to avoid diplomatic complications if it was discovered. It's also easier to justify selling to a friendly country instead of an enemy. He and his wife might have thought, "It's not like India is going to use the information to attack the US. What's the harm?"

He split the data into 50 packets. He was asking for $100k per packet, or $5mil. They nabbed him after the first packet.

I was just kidding of course, but the idea of defined acronyms is interesting. Hover over an acronym and see the expanded text.

Laura, congratulations. Does it support acronyms? :)

Anyone interested should sign up for the changelog emails. It's only 1-2 emails a month and shows how much progress Laura and her team are making.

It probably doesn't make a lot of sense for a greenfield project, but for established projects it might make sense to stay with the current technology stack. At my last job we had a team of 10+ domain experts that were expert level at a proprietary language. Replacing years of work to save $10k per developer every year would have been a bad decision.

Don't tell Kickstarter. :)

The NEMA 'L' receptacles (L5, L6, ...) are locking. When you connect the two ends together you rotate them slightly so they won't disconnect due to vibration, etc.

It just means that because this is a federal requirement that needs to be implemented by the states, we're going to see 50 different implementations. Some will work better than others.

First, I think you mean FDR, not Teddy. Second, you have to be very specific in your definition of "reelected" to not include Truman ('48) or Johnson ('64).

The "important" software is the Flight Software that runs on Falcon and Dragon. That is written in C++.

As others have pointed out, those official MS VMs are for evaluation only. You are not legally allowed to use them for development. Of course, you could pay MS for a license and do your Windows development in a VM on Linux (or Mac), so that is something that MS supports that Apple doesn't. But to develop for Windows or Mac/iOS you will most likely need to give some money to MS or Apple.

Companies used to take their profits and either invest in R&D/Capital if they were trying to grow, or give dividends if they were mature. But once C-level compensation became focused on stock options, top management have an incentive to increase the stock price over other concerns. If a company spends every dollar of profit (or cheap loans) on buybacks, they aren't spending money on things that will sustain the business long term like R&D, having funds to weather a downturn, etc. Not that every buyback is a problem. Apple has done buybacks because they felt there stock was the best place to invest their money. It's not like they blew through their cash account just to boost the price.

You might be looking at the price that includes the breakout board.
