The six dungarees of Kevin Bacon?

I just met John Robson at a meeting who was one of the first people in the world to run a frequency domain analysis on time series data - on EDSAC! He spent a long time explaining the precise algorithms to me - amazing!

Note that in one way finding life on other planets would be a disaster - implying that the 'great filter' is more likely to still be ahead of us...

A feature that no one is talking about but which is even cooler: You can use the same technology to a) directly simulate color blindness (drive the L and M cones with the same signal) and b) in theory drive subsets of a dichromat's L cones with derived L- and M- cone amplitudes - does that make them sort of trichromatic? Such an amazing technology! The whole AO story ultimately links back to the Starfire Optical Range : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Starfire_Optical_Range

I see what you did there!

Their pricing is incredible on the token plan - something like 50b tokens for $60!

Is it wrong that I prefer the Shrek version?

Through the magic of liner algebra it turns out that you can stimulate cones independently even with normal displays. Search for 'silent substitution'!

I used to think that as well. This book recently made me think again: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_10,000_Year_Explosion

I don't know about the big 5 but in the six-factor 'open source' version (the HEXACO) the 'H' stands for 'honesty/humility' https://hexaco.org/

Love those old photos of Macromedia - my wife worked in the same building at the time and they bring back a lot of nice memories :)

I think you would very much enjoy this book: https://share.google/boWcVLRiYz0c7EmKh

They talk quite a bit about this sort of thing at the end...

Maybe a job for Daltonize:

It twiddles colors in a physiologically-aware manner to improve legibility for colorblind observers:

We recently updated the Vischeck website properly after 25 years. Everything is now client-side Javascript and the color vision simulations, Daltonize correction and infant vision simulations are all in the same place. Full GPL source code is available on

https://github.com/wadelab/VischeckTinyeyes

Enjoy!

This guy's entire output is incredible (from alien tellitubbies onwards). Go moose! https://mastodon.social/@ancientjames

Thank you Uncle Dane. Uncletopia is my happy place. I know that people say that the solutions to lots of problems are political not technical. But I think in this case there really are simple technical fixes that would be trivial to implement and very effective. Off to W+M1 right now...

For the most relaxing thing you will do today - try to get the different layers to be homogeneous by perturbing them slightly with the cursor.

I'm still reading the paper but I think it might enable better versions of this sort of thing: https://www.nist.gov/noac/technology/magnetic-and-electric-f...

Sufficiently accurate clocks can act as 'relativity sensors' - measuring changes in the 'time' bit of spacetime due to small changes in gravity.

I >think< that this will enable more accurate magnetometers (see OPM-MEG and atomic clock magnetometers). Which can be used, among other things, for measuring neuronal activity.

Weird use case: sending EEG trigger codes through a Dpixx interface to an old ANT amplifier requires the codes to be Morton numbers. It took us a loooong time to work that out :)

I was completing my PhD at the time. I called it 'Thesis Annihilation'.

But but not a good experience on mobile. I like the feature where you can compare two species...

You might be surprised to learn that Baddeley is a) still an active scientist and b) still turns up to undergraduate seminars (although now on zoom).

Numerical recipes in C. I still find myself looking stuff up there after all these years...

It will take longer than the age of the universe to evaporate. So tides. For a while.

I've often wondered if it might be possible to set up an 'auction' system for papers. Post on arXiv and then have journals 'bid' for publication - saying how much they would charge in publication fees, review turnaround etc. Authors can then choose the journal they prefer. The advantage would be that the initial stage of 'shopping around' would be eliminated (sending a paper to a journal and being rejected without review) and there would be incentive for journals to reduce publication fees. Just a thought...

Do you have more details on this? I have never heard of it.

Can we also have a discussion about the 'normal' behaviour monitoring tools like Classcharts that are used by pretty much every school in the UK? These collect fine-grained data about behaviour throughout the day and link it both to the child but also the people that are near that child. It operates all across the child's school career. I've tried to opt my kids out of this but it's really hard. At best I think they have stopped logging their behaviour but they are still in the data as a 'network' influence. Classcharts used to boast about how their AI could do behavioural profiling but that looked too creepy so now they just talk about how teachers can use the data for seating planning. I'm pretty sure that I could use the data to profile a child pretty effectively even after they have left school. God only knows what happens to the data or how it is secured - the school literally don't care and think I'm crazy for even asking.
