linarism··on EU irate about geo-locked Apple IDs
As I understand geo-locking is done for Mainland China accounts as well, so nothing new.
linarism··on Breaking Bitlocker – Bypassing the Windows Disk Encryption [video]
Worth noting that modern AMD CPUs incorporate the TPM functionality in the CPU itself, not sure about Intel.
linarism··on Frank founder Charlie Javice arrested, charged with defrauding JPMorgan Chase
What actually happens is the VC firms have a relationship with Forbes and push their most favored start-ups on them. A big chunk of people don’t do anything to get on the list, except write their own bios and of course getting funded by said VCs.

That being said, yes, there’s quite a lot of vain people in there.

linarism··on Ask HN: How are you hosting email for your startup employees?
I run O365 for the obvious tools and AD but use GSuite for email. SSO for GSuite using AzureAD makes me laugh, plus your employees can use both ‘sign-in with’ Microsoft or Google account for other services and have a single log-in page that ends up just being Microsoft. There’s some tedium with creating accounts on both GSuite and AzureAD, and I’m sure that can be fixed and combined, but who can be bothered when it’s at most 1 employee a week to on-board for early days. Pick your poison, both is an option and works surprisingly well.
linarism··on Teensy 4.1 Development Board
Apparently it's as simple as using a different offset in pointers when enabled!
linarism··on Teensy 4.1 Development Board
It is supported in hardware for multiple protocols: CAN1.0, CAN2.0, and CANFD. I'm pretty sure there are 3 ports that can be used simultaneously and independently. I only use 2 with CAN1.0.

Edit: By hardware support I mean that a CAN transciever connects to two GPIO pins with access to CAN chip hardware. No SPI interface needed.

linarism··on Jetson AGX Xavier
Genuinely curious, what is an example of a beefy ARM machine?
linarism··on With USB 4, Intel is finally making good on the promise of royalty-free 40 Gbps
This is definitely one of the enabling technologies for Apple to use their own ARM-based CPUs on MacBooks
linarism··on Huawei Caught Faking Smartphone Photo with a DSLR
The last time I remember something like this happening was from 2012[1].

linarism··on iOS 11.4 to Disable USB Port After 7 Days: What It Means for Mobile Forensics
Please bear with me, I'm not OS-savvy, are many of these features designed to protect against untrusted processes? If both phones have no additional apps installed, what would be the most likely way for the data within to be compromised? Is it fair of me to believe it's fair to distinguish telemetry and security as separate concerns?
linarism··on iOS 11.4 to Disable USB Port After 7 Days: What It Means for Mobile Forensics
Is there any security reason someone would purchase a security-focused Android phone (Blackphone, Blackberry) over an iPhone?
linarism··on I miss Windows Phone
The back button is not locked to the current app but is based on interaction history. In fact if you use your phone and end up with a dozen open apps, pressing the back button a couple dozen times would be quite similar to navigating in exact reverse of how you got there.
linarism··on Intel 8th Gen Core with Radeon RX Vega GPU Presentation
I wonder if OEMs will find it easier to design a single 100W cooling system instead of 2 45W cooling systems to fit inside an ultrabook. Hoping for a new XPS15!
linarism··on In Chatlogs, Celebrated Hacker and Activist Confesses Countless Sexual Assaults
Rape is traumatizing and the criminal prosecution process is not helpful in letting the victim recover. Imagine being told to recount the events in front of strangers countless times, while one party's job is to make anything you say doubtful and convince others you're wrong to be traumatized. At least with social media you only have to write it out once.
linarism··on Orcas have learned how to drown great white sharks
What an excellent article. I was very surprised to see the 'specs' difference between the animals, I've never seen either in real life.
linarism··on All 500 of the world's top 500 supercomputers are running Linux
Serious question (not in IT), what else can they run?
linarism··on Introducing Surface Book 2
You may also find that the unibody MB has the screen portion housed in a different aluminum block than the body. Semantics are dumb.
linarism··on Equifax takes down web page after reports of new hack
The incompetence is mindblowing. Could this be a good argument for software engineers to get their professional license?
linarism··on Dropbox taking entire building in Mission Bay – biggest lease in city history
Good for them, I gladly pay the yearly fee for their service. Haven't had as much reliability with any other cloud storage service.
linarism··on Introducing Oculus Go, Plus Santa Cruz Updates
Positional tracking?
linarism··on YouTube Bans Award-Winning Short
I'm kind of surprised that Patreon hasn't made a spinoff platform to compete with YouTube for all the YouTubers flocking to their donation service.
linarism··on A Material That Throws Heat into Space Could Soon Reinvent Air-Conditioning
Low quality energy. Also, not sure how precious it really is. A car has a better entropy differential at the exhaust pipe.
