lioeters··on AI execs may be too out of touch to build for the general public
Or some ad I heard about with Melissa Meyers asking AI to list three best qualities about her child for a school homework because she couldn't think of any. It's sad, and even worse they think showing this to the world would help sell a product.
lioeters··on Four Months of Zig
From that single sentence it's obvious you don't know what you're talking about, and your dismissal is worthless to the discussion.

lioeters··on Show HN: Yavashark: I've Built a JavaScript Engine Every Day for 950 Days
Congrats on the public launch!

The repo description says "A JS/TS Engine". What are your plans on integrating/implementing TypeScript? Also I see the codebase is in Rust but there's some setup/tooling for Go. Are you planning to release it as a Go package?

Oh, the first question is answered in the post:

> Yavashark’s CLI can run React with TypeScript

Nice, curious to see how that works internally - is it type stripping? I wonder about source mapping, for example, line numbers in error messages.

Most residents of Greenland are indigenous Inuits. A boot-licking fascist would be happy to betray his own country and support selling off the territory.

Thanks for the recommendation!

Proofs and Refutations: The Logic of Mathematical Discovery - Imre Lakatos

I appreciated your defense of mathematics as a communal process of developing human understanding, not just a way to solve problems and generate proofs. While the latter is important and valuable, replacing mathematicians on an industrial scale will destroy the cultural context that cultivated the field over generations.

Brilliant, thank you. I see, aside from fully automated labs, they work with various kinds of industry-specific drones and robotics. The phrase "modular laboratories" catches my eye, and reminds me I recently learned about your business called the Modular Company, doing tech due diligence. From the wide range of industries listed, I imagine there's a lot that can be learned from the clients, and the businesses being assessed, their niche knowledge and experience.

(Ah, one of their clients is FANUC, a Japanese robotics company I learned about from the Wikipedia article on lights-out manufacturing.)

"Dark factory" is the perfect term, that the labs can operate without lights, heating, and other human needs - but I also like how it has a cyberpunk feel. Another aspect I find attractive is that it treats a laboratory as an automated system, like a program that is implemented in hardware and software (and "wetware", humans participating in the system) - probably including some kind of AI as part of the process.

How about a "lights-out company", or dark business. (Well the latter sounds too suspicious, haha.) Surely there are people working on automated business systems, modelling it as a machine or program with inputs and outputs, self-modifying based on reward functions, adaptive and evolutionary.

Now that the production of software is getting automated, mechanized and industrialized, I've heard people say that the differentiating factor for successful software is the domain-specific knowledge of the businesses where it's being applied. Perhaps that's becoming true of mathematics too, where pure maths - like software for developers - is dominated by automation, the cost of production so low that humans cannot compete with the machines. The term "software factory" is pretty old, but it's taken on a new meaning where the role of humans is mainly managing an automated system, often with language models working day and night without requiring much oversight.

lioeters··on Python's experimental JIT to be removed
> strictly typed subset of the language with compilation and static analysis

This is a great idea for popular dynamic languages with existing users and codebases, particularly the focus on "subset" to limit the scope and emphasizing that full backward compatibility is not a goal; and allowing for gradual, incremental adoption. That makes it a lot more practical to implement and adopt.

I think we'll see more of this. Recent examples include strictly typed TypeScript subset designed for ahead-of-time compilation.

lioeters··on Antique Fonts Collection – Restored 19th Century Typefaces
AI-assisted de-copyrighting of proprietary works might be an unexpected social good. Please release everything into the public domain. Although, in this particular case, converting rasterized images back into fonts is likely very lossy in terms of embedded information.

lioeters··on Anthropic trained Claude on illegally obtained Stanford professors' books
The title change from "illegally trained" to "illegally obtained" implies that training on illegally obtained books is legal. I wouldn't be surprised if that's the case. Surely Anthropic has a legal team that signed off on it.

Cool! How fun, I'm a big fan of your work and will enjoy learning from this project too. (:

lioeters··on Ghostty 1.4
Kitty is really nice, a programmable terminal that does everything I want, GPU rendering, etc. Haven't used Ghostty yet but one of its advantages is libghostty, modern terminal emulation as a library.

> libghostty: a cross-platform, minimal dependency library that exposes a C API so feature-rich, correct, and fast terminal functionality can be embedded by any application anywhere.

Oh the author actually posted about it just now in rich detail. It's pretty exciting for people who spend much of their time in the terminal.

lioeters··on Three new discoveries in mathematics, computer science, and physics
Oh I'm curious! Searched through your post history but couldn't find the link. But the phrase "lights out" did turn up a general term for this, also called "dark factory", which requires minimal human intervention to operate. Our cyberpunk future is self-actualizing.

lioeters··on Three new discoveries in mathematics, computer science, and physics
> The main argument in favor of P ≠ NP is the total lack of fundamental progress in the area of exhaustive search. This is, in my opinion, a very weak argument. The space of algorithms is very large and we are only at the beginning of its exploration. — Moshe Y. Vardi

That sounds particularly relevant in how AI-assisted/driven mathematical research is changing the game, where previous assumptions based on human experience/effort are being overturned unexpectedly.

lioeters··on Three new discoveries in mathematics, computer science, and physics
Are there efforts into building "autonomous laboratories"? Not sure if the idea is practical but it seems like a direction things might go in, where you give an advanced model, or a swarm with a leader, free reign to run experiments day and night.

For the benefit of others, the correct spelling is: Szymanski.

Thank you for this voluminous comment, I'm reading through this and others that have been downvoted, and just wanted to show my appreciation, it's been insightful and educational. I've made notes of the books mentioned, and will be studying them over time to better understand our historical situation and possible future direction.

lioeters··on Concerning behavior from a popular open-weight AI model
Brilliant, those links are right up my alley. The more I engage with the transformation that society is going through, the good and the bad, the more I'm pulled towards action, as in becoming an activist in the most positive meaning. I've seen too much, I've learned too much not to do something about the situation.

The world needs everyone to stand up and work on making it better, otherwise there are corrupt forces of immense resources that are shaping the future of our society from "above", in ways that are more dystopian than we can imagine. Thanks for the inspiration.

Haha, not surprised the whole thread got flagged. It was certainly provoking a lot of uncomfortable questions that many would prefer not to think about, the bloody history and reality of their privileged position.

The fashification of this forum has been remarkable, the apologists and the deniers, the racists, imperialists, supremacists - crawling out of the woodworks to dominate this communal mental space, seeking to normalize their ideology, to suppress intelligent people from becoming aware of the decades of manipulation and turning inward to introspect on the inherent inequalities and power structures.

In short, there is an active effort in preventing the crowd from becoming woke.

It's too late though, you can't keep us in the obsolete 20th-century mentality, and you cannot stop the process of conscious evolution.

lioeters··on Concerning behavior from a popular open-weight AI model
Thanks for these links, they articulate a lot of what I've been feeling about what's happening but hadn't been able to quite express. It's as if humanity is being challenged by our own creation, to clarify what it is that makes us human, to question the mechanization of society, and to struggle against being domesticated by those wield this new technology.
lioeters··on Concerning behavior from a popular open-weight AI model
I expect providers of language models are well aware of this psychological phenomenon of anthropomorphism and projection, people's tendency to form emotional bonds with inanimate objects, and have trained the models to perform as a conscious subject, using "I think", "in my opinion", etc.

Oh I'm sorry about that, I must have been mistaken. I'd remove the comment if I could. I better stop reading political discussions on this site, as it's ruining my mental health with anger and divisiveness. It's kind of ironic that I falsely accused you of cheating in a thread about the Brazil election in which there were also false accusations (as well as true ones, it seems). My bad, please don't take it personally.
