lmpdev··on Switzerland. Block by block. At 1:1 scale
Reminds me of the Dufour map of Switzerland

https://www.swisstopo.admin.ch/en/dufour-map

I still think it's by far the greatest map I've come across throughout history: given both the limitations of the time period and the painstakingly consistent hachuring. It's just immaculate

lmpdev··on Using LLM for confidence scoring is a bad idea
I really miss checking model assumptions…
lmpdev··on Rabbits were a medieval royal luxury in England until the Black Death
Also our most successful rugby league team’s name was given as a derogatory put down: “Rabbitoh”, which was seen as a poor sales person flogging rabbit meat for money

South Sydney being a poor area, yielded the South Sydney Rabbitohs

lmpdev··on Two and a half years without a gallbladder
Anecdotal but my partner had her gallbladder out a few months ago (started to affect her pancreas —- was a bit worrying for the doctors)

The doctors said gallstone formation can occur with rapid weight loss

She was (and still is) on a GLP-1

No symptoms post gallbladder removal

lmpdev··on GPT-6 Astra
Compared to what we had in 2016 with RNNs, this is effectively “AGI”
lmpdev··on Error by AI scribe during medical appointment leaves patient devastated
I think we need to keep in mind that medical and pharmacy mistakes are still extremely common

Recently my partner received a prescription with instructions that were over the LD50 (we caught it as it was obviously too high). We reported it but it was likely the case of the clerk simply hitting the wrong button and not double checking the resulting sticker

I’d be interested to see the AI transcription failure rate compared with existing medical/pharmacy rates

lmpdev··on Memory prices climb 500% in 12 months
TSMC US federal plant funding was under Biden not Trump (CHIPS act)

Trump did do the initial deal though, but TSMC had to cough the money up for that

TSMC wouldn’t put tens of billons of dollars in irreversible investment just to virtue signal, the scale is too large

You can’t “undo” a fab

lmpdev··on GLM-5.3: Frontier coding with emergent cyber capabilities
I assume they mean same t/sec as a SOTA cloud model
lmpdev··on Apple fixes 75 security issues with your iPhone and 155 for Mac, update now
I assume they’re referring to Fable’s guardrails?
lmpdev··on Show HN: Physically accurate black hole you can put in your room
Yes they’re not related and are much more humane imho

No Orcas, good rehab program, seal exhibit is good (no true seals), Polar bears are a bit sad though

I did the seal diving experience which was great - mostly disabled California sea lions and NZ Fur seals (which do well in captivity)

lmpdev··on Show HN: I mapped every US golf course
In wealthy parts of the US, maybe

The vast majority of the world is nothing like this

From Scotland to Tasmania, most courses congregate around already wet and mostly sand/loamy soil (largely unusable for other purposes without major construction)

I agree with you for artificial American places like TPC Scottsdale or Wolf Creek GC etc

lmpdev··on Show HN: I mapped every US golf course
Is the Lake course as good as I’ve heard?
lmpdev··on Show HN: I mapped every US golf course
Seems to be mostly be a US-only phenomenon

And even then, a broad generalisation

It’s $10 USD/round in my area, cheaper than bowling by a mile

lmpdev··on Computation as a universal and fundamental concept
The answer is we don’t know for certain

There are even some philosophers/mathematicians who attest to finitism (they’re not mainstream, though), but if correct would undermine our idea of fields and continuous structures more broadly

lmpdev··on Computation as a universal and fundamental concept
A parallel concept to this is from functionalism/theory of mind in Philosophy is that of Multiple Realisability
lmpdev··on Acronym Fatigue Series Introduction: why I'm wary of acronyms
One thing that irks me quite a bit is when adjacent fields adopt the same acronym for different things

LoRa (RF tech) vs LORA (AI optimisation technique) GLM (statistics) vs GLM (AI model)

lmpdev··on I Am Behind on C# 14 Features, and I Can't Prove It but Does It Matter?
The new Primary Constructors syntax is an absolute god-send for simple classes
lmpdev··on Google Hits 50% IPv6
What Malcolm Turnbull did to the NBN was absolutely disgraceful

The reforms also resulted in a lot of people never getting FTTN/FFTC in the first place - so will forever be 5G only unless there’s a new scheme rolled out

lmpdev··on GLM 5.2 Is Out
Another LoRA moment
lmpdev··on Nostalgic Kits Central (2024)
Jaycar in Australia still sells them

Just released new packaging actually

lmpdev··on A recent experience with ChatGPT 5.5 Pro
I mean in the same way getting Wolfram Alpha to solve a really hard/ugly differential equation I suppose
lmpdev··on The buns in McDonald's Japan's burger photos are all slightly askew
I repaired some of ~10 years ago (Australia)

Just low end uncustomised NUCs overheating behind the screen

No idea if that’s still the case

lmpdev··on Tourists to Australia to have social media vetted under Trumpian Coalition
Their voter base is largely dying off

I don’t see them being one of the top two parties in a couple of decades unless younger generations start actually having resources/assets to conserve

lmpdev··on Tourists to Australia to have social media vetted under Trumpian Coalition
Geoff Provest (Nationals MP) recently did the same thing commenting on an Albanese social media post pretending to be a disgruntled Labor voter
lmpdev··on Electrical transformer manufacturing is throttling the electrified future
Not an expert but every node in an UHVDC network would need expensive equipment

Point to point is just two nodes, but scaling that outward would be very expensive

AC transmission is relatively cheap in comparison

lmpdev··on Some Unusual Trees
Yeah the Blue Quandongs get pretty big

Tweed Valley in NNSW so lots of water and volcanic soil

Edit: turns out the Blue Quandong and the Quandong are very different species - my mistake

lmpdev··on Some Unusual Trees
As someone who grew up with a Quandong in their backyard please don’t plant quandongs without serious planning

It grew 40m in ~10 years and spanned ~200-300m^2

lmpdev··on The Joy of Numbered Streets
Only place I’ve ever seen it is the main stretch along Palm Beach on the Gold Coast

1st through 27th Avenues - they’re over 100 years old now funnily enough

lmpdev··on IBM Announces Strategic Collaboration with Arm
I was surprised to find out they still have hardware repair technicians (extremely expensive but reliable: ~$400 per computer around 2022 iirc)

But yes they’re mostly enterprise/services/mainframes not anything overly consumer
