loeg··on Oracle files to sell $20B in new stock, bonds to finance AI buildout
Again, their economic value is the same as it was before.
loeg··on The SEC Should Block Anthropic's IPO to Protect the Public
Anecdotally, I didn't start using AI at work until after summer 2025, and now it's essential.
loeg··on Oracle files to sell $20B in new stock, bonds to finance AI buildout
Their shares are worth more as a result. Oracle's corporate charter has some provision for the number of shares they're allowed to issue and existing shareholders bought their shares knowing that. Increasing the authorized share limit requires shareholder vote.
loeg··on Oracle files to sell $20B in new stock, bonds to finance AI buildout
They own a smaller portion of outstanding shares, but the shares they own are worth more. Their value doesn't decrease.

It's not dilutive -- current shareholders get $10B (or 97% of $10B, whatever). Market reaction is some combination of profitability concern / bankruptcy risk because Oracle is super leveraged and taking on even more debt. Maybe the AI hyperscalars will slow down spending in 2028.
loeg··on AI delivers 'zero financial payoff' to most companies, Apollo economist says
Have to wonder if Apollo has some short positions on the Mag7 or whatever.
loeg··on Redox: Ring Buffers Project Summary
Great!
loeg··on Redox: Ring Buffers Project Summary
The Redox article is underselling it somewhat. Part of the problem is Linux's historical syscall restriction systems (seccomp) did not (does not?) apply to io_uring, so io_uring is (was?) all or nothing on async versions of syscalls it implements. Also, io_uring is rapidly adding API surface compared to other parts of the kernel. With these factors combined, it has had repeated security problems since 2019 and has lead to, e.g., Android disabling io_uring entirely for applications.

https://security.googleblog.com/2023/06/learnings-from-kctf-...

> in the past year, there has been a clear trend: 60% of the submissions exploited the io_uring component of the Linux kernel (we paid out around 1 million USD for io_uring alone). Furthermore, io_uring vulnerabilities were used in all the submissions which bypassed our mitigations.

Why now? These events were 60 years ago.

loeg··on Blockchain intelligence firms link North Korea to $6.3B hack on Binance
Forging doesn't scale. No one wants counterfeit for anything close to $1 per dollar. You have to pass off bad bills one at a time.
loeg··on Patrick Stewart has died
That's just what the writers of the fictional show thought was utopian. It doesn't tell us anything about the real world; it's fiction.

loeg··on Gemini 4 Carbon
Huh. Do people actually find that Fable-5.1 is worse than Opus-5.5 for any task?
loeg··on Gemini 4 Carbon
Does it rank on FelonyBench, though?

It's Ars; you come to expect it.

CVSS scores are essentially meaningless. Don't read anything into it.
loeg··on SS United States to be sunk as largest artificial reef
Or Social Security.
loeg··on SS United States to be sunk as largest artificial reef
The German one isn't relevant for post-war American ships. Hope that helps.
loeg··on Genie 4
Games can have a story/narrative without extensive scripted cutscenes! These things are almost entirely orthogonal.
loeg··on Meta Employees Denounce Interference in Brazilian Elections
Eh. My point was that your wishful thinking isn’t even internally consistent. And certainly has no basis in the real world, where not everyone shares your exact ideology.
loeg··on Genie 4
(And it’s annoying as hell if you actually want to play a game rather than watch a movie.)

He gets credit when the share price goes from 300 to 95, but not when it goes from 38 to 700?
loeg··on Type Server Protocol
I’m not a fan either, but it doesn’t bother me at all. Who cares? Let the python people do their thing.
loeg··on Anthropic S-1
We don't buy public companies expecting AMZN level return from every single one of them.
loeg··on Meta Employees Denounce Interference in Brazilian Elections
If we're just wishing for everyone to behave exactly how we want, you might as well just wish for the company operators and executives to behave exactly how you want as well. And then you don't need to coordinate the much larger employees group.
loeg··on Meta Employees Denounce Interference in Brazilian Elections
> Any calls for Meta to change are useless until Mark Zuckerberg no longer holds a majority of voting shares.

That's not true. Zuckerberg blinked when the share price hit the 90s in 2022. Despite holding the vote, he started listening to external investors more.

loeg··on Meta Employees Denounce Interference in Brazilian Elections
> If there was a leaked internal communication about them disrupting elections, the news stories would probably lead with that instead of dancing around the subject.

And it works! Nearly every comment here is just riffing on how this was definitely intentional and further evidence of the commenter's preconceived notions of Meta, etc, etc.

loeg··on Meta Employees Denounce Interference in Brazilian Elections
No actual details or evidence of favoritism backing the claims.
