lr1970··on Why are Soviet math textbooks so hardcore in comparison to US textbooks? (2017)
> They may have gone to better schools, with better teachers, or had parents who cared more etc.

This is true. At the same time the Soviet Education Ministry recognized the fact that many schools and teachers are sub-par, and they went to great length to create books for self-study. Math text books curriculum was curated by Andrey Kolmogorov [0] himself with the help of talented stuff. There was monthly Quant magazine (STEM for high schoolers) and a "Quant library" -- short books written by math/physics/chemistry experts for the high school audience. This was very helpful for smart kids that were not in Moscow or Leningrad (now Saint Petersburg).

You should normalize by the number of trucks on the road in each category (gas/electric). Absolute number of fires make little sense if you have 1000 times more ICE trucks than electric ones.

This is what happens with you delegate power and decision making to others. At least you did the right thing -- moved out and now you and your wife have full agency and responsibility for your own house.
lr1970··on 2026 is an exciting year for the Rust compiler (and me)
> I think a newer language, having the boreness of go, the compile speed and maybe comp time of zig and safety of rust will emerge,

Mojo?

lr1970··on What agents mean for Rust (and vice versa)
Mojo looks interesting [0]. It is designed by Chris Lattner himself [1] and has an interesting take on borrowing references (Rust's DNA) comptime execution inspired by Zig. And it targets CPU and GPU (NPU, TPU) as first class targets. Recently reached 1.0 release.

Management should be tried for gross incompetence with some painful consequences severe enough to cause change in behavior. This is the only way.

lr1970··on Port of the TypeScript compiler, checker and lsp to Rust, by LLM
> you can spit out perfect machine level code against a specification

Typescript team explicitly mentioned the lack of Typescript specification as one of the reasons to choose Go. Typescript as the language is defined currently by its compiler which was Javascript based. Go port is as close to it as possible while Rust would be harder to reach fully identical behavior.

lr1970··on How to speed up the Rust compiler in September 2026

> Everything in low Earth orbit is moving at 7600m/s. A ~10g projectile moving that fast has an energy of 580,000 joules.

What matters is the relative velocity of the projectile towards the target. I practice it will be smaller or larger (if the bullet is incoming). But steering an incoming projectile is way harder.

lr1970··on How accurate have Ed Zitron's AI skeptic predictions been?
Ed Zitron is providing his assessment and prognosis strictly on financial basis. But AI has national security and geopolitical dimensions as well. US government is fully committed to keep the AI lead for as long as possible. And they use all sorts of tricks to affect the market in AI's favor. Financial analysis alone is not enough. The government will do anything to prevent AI bubble from bursting.

It means Google and Amazon do not care and would not voice their opposition against the government action.

The list of companies that signed this letter is telling (including Nvidia, Meta, Microsoft). Equally telling is the list of companies that did not sign it -- including Google, Amazon.
lr1970··on House passes bill to enact year-round Daylight Saving Time across the country
> but we should really stick to Standard time.

There are some arguments to stick with "half-way" time -- 30 minutes in the middle between standard and summer time. It does not necessarily solves all the problems but makes a reasonable compromise with farmers who want standard time and many others who prefer summer time.
