lysace··on Show HN: Auto Dismiss Mac OS "Allow <app> to find devices on local networks?"
Thanks for writing and then sharing this document. (Kidding. Thanks though.)
lysace··on I went to Mexico to test-drive the cars Americans can’t buy
Erm. No.
lysace··on A Pig, the State, and War: Porco Rosso (Kurenai No Buta) (2014)
Why does it need to be scientific in the first place?
lysace··on A Pig, the State, and War: Porco Rosso (Kurenai No Buta) (2014)
Yes, this is as scientific as e.g. sociology.
lysace··on I went to Mexico to test-drive the cars Americans can’t buy
(Which car brand?)

But where did that replacement dash assembly come from? They just intentionally made it less granular because make number go up.

I see your point, but it's a slightly different one.

lysace··on I went to Mexico to test-drive the cars Americans can’t buy
Okay then, with that confidence you simply must be correct.
lysace··on I went to Mexico to test-drive the cars Americans can’t buy
That's mostly a Tesla thing, isn't it? The traditional western car manufacturers figured this out many decades ago.
lysace··on I went to Mexico to test-drive the cars Americans can’t buy
Not necessarily, if you include the supply chain of the BEV? (I assume.)

I was curious, so I looked it up: 75% of electricity generation in Mexico comes from fossil fuels, mostly methane/etc gas.

It looks like some reddit mods on a power trip. Zero actual evidence presented.

lysace··on MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR Display and Touch
"We've done tons of user testing on this, and it turns out it doesn't work," Jobs said at the company's "Back to the Mac" event in 2010. "Touch surfaces don't want to be vertical. It gives great demo but after a short period of time, you start to fatigue and after an extended period of time, your arm wants to fall off," Jobs continued. "It doesn't work, it's ergonomically terrible."

lysace··on Track all the layoffs happening around the world
You can't build a reliable model by just looking at the news.

Look at government data.

lysace··on Amazon Is Gutting Its AI Division After Sustained Failure
Well except for the regular HN anti-AI crowd. Usually the same people that have wished for communism and never ever looked in detail into the 20+ states that failed that way.
lysace··on Genie 4
So Google is the new Microsoft but with better software engineering quality. And two decades younger. And they're still slowing down.

(Maybe I should reallocate some of my GOOG stock into ANT after all.)

lysace··on Genie 4
That touches on the core reason not to get excited about these Google releases: They release something cool and then don't iterate on it. Instead they go off building another cool demo instead.

Gah. Go iterate. Listen to customers, adapt, iterate some more etc etc. That's how products are made.

lysace··on New iMac with M6
They even put the (optional, by default it's wireless only) 2.5G Ethernet socket in the external power brick. This pattern seems to have been introduced with the M1 iMac. The 2.5G upgrade is new.
lysace··on New iMac with M6
The design, especially with those colors is gorgeous, yes.
lysace··on AI promised less work. I've never worked more
Did it really promise that? Who pitched that?
lysace··on Root shell on Samsung TV
It allows for infinite scroll in x/y directions with only (3x) incremental paints of new columns/lines without:

a) needing to redraw a full screen when you reach the end of the buffer/region "ring"

or

b) relying on VGA 64k address wrapping (fiddly, doesn't work the same with all cards, doesn't allow you to use a split screen for a stationary lower status bar).

You need two regions for double buffering, giving you more paint time for all those sprites and one more for the wrapping trick. As you move around these three regions swap roles.

lysace··on Root shell on Samsung TV
Simplified:

Three regions that move as you scroll in x/y: current/next/clean.

The key is that when you scroll a column or a line, that column/line is written in all three regions.

The clean region is used both as a source for filling the dirty places where sprites have been written as well as the next current or next after a wrap.

VGA registers take care of the x, y start output.

FWIW I've spent the past few days happily reverse-engineering various aspects of DOS games I've long been curious about. I finally understand how Arjan Brussee did the scrolling in Jazz Jackrabbit. It's brilliant. This guy is a genius.

It's somewhat complex to understand; I didn't understand Claude's textual explanation at first. After asking for a html/js simulator showing things visually it clicked.

No pushback from Claude so far.

lysace··on I Built a Stereo Vision Board for Hardware Hackers
https://rootkitlabs.com/2023/07/08/5-Strategies-to-Sink-your... from that blog was a fun/interesting read.

This isn’t a dropshipping success story, a lucrative exit, or a guide. This is a silly story documenting our failed hardware startup. It’s embarrassing to fail, so we seldom hear these stories, but I’m going to tell you one, here goes.

lysace··on Show HN: Swurf – Swipe through the real web
I like the idea. Maybe add a very brief explanation about how it learns?

Also please make a tvOS version. It's a perfect fit. :)

lysace··on Meta ordered to pay $25B penalty in New Mexico Cambridge Analytica case
Previously when the EU has ordered US companies to pay penalties of a "few billion EUR" for trade abuse there has typically been a lot of jingoistic outrage here. This one will be interesting to watch.
lysace··on SIGSALY: Churchill's top secret hotline to the president
Supposedly like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OvR4qK0B--w&t=517s

(I see now that it was already linked elsewhere in the the thread.)

Pretty impressive for cross atlantic one-time pad voice comms in an analogue era, I think. It's amazing what money and smart people can accomplish.

lysace··on New Apple TV 4K
Interestingly, it has 8 GB LPDDR5X, up from 4 GB LPDDR4 in the 3rd gen. That's a sizeable part of the BOM cost, I assume. They really wanted local AI?

At least according to: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apple_TV_(device)#Technical_sp...
