madmads··on Meta takes down a critical video about meta AI Glasses after filming at Meta
Why does the effectiveness of the protest be contingent on stealing the glasses?
madmads··on German button maker searched rivers of American Midwest for valuable shells
The story starts with a German man, John Boepple, in his button shop in Germany. He immigrates to the US with the resolve to search for more freshwater mussels. So yes, it is relevant if you're interested in telling a story of the events that transpired.

The smarter way to comment online: Read the article before commenting on how to best understand it. As the other reader mentioned, that's not what the article says.
madmads··on DNS traffic can leak outside the VPN tunnel on Android
Not universally true, I use banking apps on my Pixel running the latest GrapheneOS. There is literally nothing I cannot do on my phone. I think it's possible that no US banks have apps that can be used as it seems a universal experience among Americans.
madmads··on 4K4D: Real-Time 4D View Synthesis at 4K Resolution
Yea it's probably to have a catchy name and get some attention. Although it's technically accurate to call it 4D since it includes time, I think 3D video recording would probably get the point across to more people in a less sensationalist way.
madmads··on Encrypting private data and private communications is now an ethical duty
What are you talking about? How does this relate to anything in the discussion? Besides, you were denigrating the intelligence of the average person, as though that's the reason they don't acquire all the skills necessary to have digital privacy.

Ironically, that's a stupid assumption to have. You might be in your own bubble, but I know many very intelligent people who do not have the time or interest in gaining digital privacy. It's not as easy or without compromise as you seem to think.

madmads··on Encrypting private data and private communications is now an ethical duty
That's probably the most self-aggrandizing interpretation. Could it be that other people have other priorities or interests rather than spending their time figuring out how to obtain digital privacy without compromising in the areas they care about? No surely it's their low "cognitive capital" /s
madmads··on F-Droid version of KDEConnect uninstalled by PlayProtect
Fair enough, but on the flipside I wanted to point out that for at least some of us it's possible to use GrapheneOS with no compromises to the experience. Usually you only hear about those telling you categorically that you "can't" use banking, government and other sensitive apps when that's not true. Anyone on the fence should try it out themselves.
madmads··on F-Droid version of KDEConnect uninstalled by PlayProtect
I use GrapheneOS daily and use banking, government, and other sensitive apps without problem. It's a common myth that you can't use those apps on GrapheneOS.
madmads··on Return to Office Is Bullshit and Everyone Knows It
Maybe if you sprinkle the advice with your own bit of reasoning it becomes usable, you don't have to take it as literally as written on the page.
madmads··on Return to Office Is Bullshit and Everyone Knows It
I think it's assumed that it's within reason and in situations where the ultimatum has the purpose of pushing you into a situation you would prefer not to be in. The WoW example is an example of dysfunctional behavior and the HR example is a routine process and not unexpected from the recipient nor is the cost of filling it in extreme. Your examples don't apply and it should be obvious why.

madmads··on ArchiveTeam has saved over 11.2B Reddit links
Do you think it's possible to pay a new group of people and have them care as much as the people who met voluntarily out of sheer interest and dedication to their community? I doubt it.

Edit: not that I'm against paying mods, I support that. But replacing enthusiast mods with paid mods, I doubt that'll be adequate.

madmads··on Google appears to be scaling up the ads it shows to Gmail users
Are we still getting surprised by this? I feel like I've read a version of your comment on posts like this for the past couple of years.
madmads··on Ask HN: Most interesting tech you built for just yourself?
NL is meant as Netherlands here and the context is that since you can't talk about growing cannabis in the open, people talk about their "vegetable" gardens or "herbs" instead. The comment you're responding to is implying that the grow tent is used to grow cannabis but he's covering it up by saying it's a vegetable garden.
madmads··on Scaling Transformer to 1M tokens and beyond with RMT
Because some people believe that sufficient progression in this field would result in a setback for humanity in the long run. Personally, I'm not sure what to believe.
madmads··on Tell HN: Google search partial outage while rolling out new search?
Working just fine in Northern Europe
madmads··on Apple will use 100 percent recycled cobalt in batteries by 2025
But doesn't using one battery through another effectively mean that you're using both batteries in terms of wear and tear? If the phone drains the internal battery and the magsafe battery is charging the internal battery, to me that sounds like both batteries are in use experiencing normal wear. If that's not how it works, I'd be curious to hear how it does work.
madmads··on Tell HN: iOS lets carriers add WiFi networks that you can’t stop from joining
There's active support going back to the Pixel 4a with the Pixel 4 being EOL.

https://grapheneos.org/faq#device-support

Looking under the next section "Which devices are recommended?" it sounds like support is planned for the full life of newer devices that have 5-year update guarantees.

madmads··on Tell HN: iOS lets carriers add WiFi networks that you can’t stop from joining
I use GrapheneOS on a Pixel 7 Pro daily and I can use banking, transport, and government apps just fine. There's only been one time I had to look up how to get an app working and that was trivial. I get notifications and can use the Google services I choose with permissions I pick. I can even use all the hardware features such as Google's AI image editing and camera features. Even installing GrapheneOS is done through a browser and takes just a few steps. If you are just slightly technically inclined I see no reason you can't use GrapheneOS, I haven't personally had to compromise in any way while I have gained complete control of my device.

Even if using GrapheneOS came with downsides, the amount of power you gain over your device would have been worth it. If you have a Pixel device you owe it to yourself to spend a few minutes finding out if you want to try GrapheneOS.

madmads··on Show HN: Alpaca.cpp – Run an Instruction-Tuned Chat-Style LLM on a MacBook
I heard somewhere that during the RHLF process of ChatGPT, people tended to rate longer responses higher. It might be something similar going on here.
madmads··on Show HN: Alpaca.cpp – Run an Instruction-Tuned Chat-Style LLM on a MacBook
Would it be possible to scale this up to use LLaMA 30b? Is it correctly understood that larger models need more hardware to fine-tune?
madmads··on Show HN: Alpaca.cpp – Run an Instruction-Tuned Chat-Style LLM on a MacBook
The 7b model loads on a lot less than 8GB RAM, so you should be good to use it on an 8GB M1 Mac Mini. It takes very little time to set up, so it's worth trying to find out.
madmads··on Facebook addiction increases depression severity among already depressed people
In this case, if the individual is diagnosed with depression, taking away an escape from reality like Facebook doesn't solve the depression. Like they said, a depressed person will find something else to substitute Facebook. Depression needs actual treatment in most cases. The analogy to vaping and smoking doesn't exactly work.
