markdown··on How to grow a cacao tree at home (2024)
> I bet that it tastes 1000 times better than the processed cacao.

It does not. Cacao beans/seeds taste utterly vile. You couldn't imagine in your wildest dreams that the chocolate you buy in stores comes from those disgusting things.

There was a cacao plantation on the side of the road that I walked past every day after school when I was between 5 and 14yrs old. I'd always pick a few on the way home to break open a pod and suck on the beans. But if you accidentally bit into one, well /* insert face vomiting emoji */

Cacao are OK to suck on (to get the pulp around the seeds), but the seeds themselves taste utterly vile.

This 48sec video (same island but across the border in PNG) is one of my favourite things. It shows the moment that a conservationist and scientist see video of a bird last documented 140yrs ago.

Crop, not crops. A palm oil monoculture as far as the eye can see.

No chance! West Papuans are being ethnically cleansed from the forest to make your chocolates cheaper (palm oil).

That's a different matter altogether. The food is bad, get refund.

But if you've never drunk Fanta Blueberry before and you try that new flavour, you don't get to ask for a refund because you decide you don't like it and prefer the original orange flavoured Fanta.

That model started in South America. They're called Bin Stores.

One day a week the bins fill up with returned/liquidated goods from Amazon, Target, etc etc. Everything in the bin is the same price and the price drops every day until they fill up again a week later.

Search "bin store" on youtube or tiktok and you should get a million videos about the craze.

> Which of the returns can be sold as new, which can be sold as-is, and which can be repaired / refurbished. What if a unit is returned once again? Did the customer return counterfeit? How to detect bad-faith actors (which may be the seller)? Who is to blame for damages? What if the item requires special handling (household chemicals, batteries, etc.)? And how to safely dispose / liquidate inventory while being compliant to all the regulations?

They just sell it in bulk and leave it to regular folk to buy pallets or containers and sell the shit on WhatNot.

US customers are nuts. I recently heard from a vendor (small business) that someone demanded a refund because they didn't like the taste of the beverage they bought. That's not the crazy part. The crazy part is that the vendor refunded their money instead of laughing them out the door.

> Never heard of liver connection, wonder if thats actually true of standard powder kratom

It is. You can look it up in the FAERS database on the FDA website.

That said, it's still far safer than alcohol in terms of the potential liver issues.

Illegal in 10 states.

In the states where it's legal, some counties and cities have banned it as well.

markdown··on Scam American companies are using to manipulate ingredient lists
This is out of control in the supplements industry.

A company called Botanic Tonics makes a product called Feel Free. These are shots containing extract of kava root, and kratom leaf.

When it was launched, there was no mention of the kratom at all. It was advertised as kava (which it isn't, it's kava extract) and pushed hard on college campuses and gas stations.

After thousands of people got addicted to the kratom, they were sued and the label has slightly improved, but the kratom is still only on the hard to read ingredient list on the back of the label. Their website, and all their social media marketing only mentions kava.

Started by ex-con Jerry Cash aka JW Ross (a good friend an donor of RFK Jnr), the company is also part owned by U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Markwayne Mullin, so the Feds turn a blind eye while going after competitors to Feel Free, like 7oH manufacturers.

> Nothing I've ever seen or experienced with FAA indicates a lack of care

Hard to fathom someone still holding that view after the 737MAX disasters.

The NTSB has repeatedly and publicly criticized the FAA for failing to implement their recommendations, including as recently as last week (Amazon Prime crash resulting in 5 deaths). They've explicitly called out the FAA's failure to act as a contributing factor in crashes, multiple times.

Regulatory capture ruined the FAA.

Surely you mean oligarch-supervised institutions.

Our institutions are supervised by representatives elected on the dime of corporate and billionaire benefactors. They pull the strings.

markdown··on I fixed a tractor using John Deere's self-repair service. Farmers aren't sold
The most popular tractor on American farms right now is the John Deere 5075E, which has between 73 and 75HP.

So you're wrong.

markdown··on I fixed a tractor using John Deere's self-repair service. Farmers aren't sold
Those large scale farms aren't the ones who have a problem with John Deere or repairability. Corporate will handle that.
markdown··on I fixed a tractor using John Deere's self-repair service. Farmers aren't sold
The worlds most popular tractor brand (Mahindra) doesn't even crack the top 5 in the US.

If American farmers wan't the most repairable tractor, they should just buy the one that is used in poorer, less-connected regions of the world. Those are built for durability and repairability.

> So according to you, American Revolutionary War was a separatist movement but not an independence struggle?

It was both, but yes, more a separatist movement. It was British colonisers separating from their government, not a colonised people overthrowing their colonisers.
