marmshallow··on HN website is/was down. I'm curious why?
down for me too
marmshallow··on Extremely large telescopes at risk
I lost it at Overwhelmingly Large
marmshallow··on Stripe issues
The title when I clicked on it was "Stripe crushed my startup at the first whiff of success".

Googling leads to this apparent snapshot of subtext "This is just a general rant, but I wish it could be more than that. A little over a week ago, my startup saw our first and sudden uptick in user activity. After a few hard months of work building our platform, we were relieved to see customer feedback and turn our first profit. It was through a marketing campaign that…"

marmshallow··on Pele's Hair
How does one living on the island stay safe from the air borne fibers?
marmshallow··on “What if it changes?”
Is this article satire? It does not offer any bounds to imagination nor scope creep. Seems like a good way to justify writing code that doesn’t help achieve immediate (or even foreseeable) goals.
marmshallow··on What do new Sudoku techniques teach us about real-world problem solving?
Indeed. After reading the title of the post, I thought it may be about the Cook-Levin theorem, which is about how all NP problems (of which Sudoku is one) can be reduced to one another.
marmshallow··on Cruise is opening driverless cars to the public in San Francisco
Yes, Cruise has obtained the relevant permits from the CA DMV. The only permit they're currently missing is the one that let's them charge customers for rides.
marmshallow··on Cruise is opening driverless cars to the public in San Francisco
I'm not sure what there is to "fall for". Cruise is offering truly driverless rides (in a limited domain), and Tesla does not have any kind of truly driverless product (although they still call it Full Self Driving).
marmshallow··on BMW removing touchscreen from a bunch of models due to chip shortage
This comment should be higher. The ui may be even more difficult/dangerous to use if you need to use the dial instead of tapping.

Like another commenter said, very curious to see safety studies on car uis.

marmshallow··on DMV approves Cruise and Waymo for commercial service in parts of Bay Area
(Tesla)
marmshallow··on DMV approves Cruise and Waymo for commercial service in parts of Bay Area
Tesla's business model (and stock valuation) is based on launching a robotaxi service. I'd say that this news introduces more competition for the robotaxi aspect, not the selling you a car aspect.
marmshallow··on DMV approves Cruise and Waymo for commercial service in parts of Bay Area
Sounds about right. No real difference from a human-driven Uber
marmshallow··on Facebook apology as AI labels black men 'primates'
What’s this about soap dispensers?
marmshallow··on Welcoming our first riders in San Francisco
In SF, Waymo/Cruise/etc have safety drivers behind the wheel who are being paid to ensure the car doesn't crash. Tesla drivers, on the other hand, are often misled about the capabilities of "FSD" and may not be paying as close attention.
marmshallow··on TikTok overtakes Facebook as most downloaded app
It’s only positive cause HN also likes bashing FB. Just give it time and the tides will turn.
marmshallow··on Too Smart
A nice short piece with a simple thesis. Should be easy enough for intelligent or ordinary people to understand.
marmshallow··on Perfectly Ordinary Stones, Carried for 1,300 Years (2014)
Someone is gonna sell theirs on Ebay (or as it’s known 1000 years from now, Eblork).
marmshallow··on Google is saving $1B per year as a result of employees working from home
It's hard to quantify the potential loss of productivity or collaboration caused by working from home, though. No way to find out either, unfortunately.
marmshallow··on Can’t use iCloud with “true” as the last name
Not every little bug that requires technical knowledge is worth a monetary reward.
marmshallow··on 3 years ago, remote top paying gigs were hard to find. Today they are the norm
Well it’s not one of the big four specifically. Neither is Twitter. While they carry weight, they’re simply not as dominant in terms of seeing cultural norms.
marmshallow··on Nothing matters but reproduction rate R
I bet a small part of the problem is that the folks who are superspreading are also the anti-vaxer types.
marmshallow··on Shitlist Driven Development (2016)
While an interesting tactic, I don't think it's a great idea as it may mean a poorer experience for the customer rather than just the development team.
marmshallow··on The Serverless Revolution Has Stalled
I think it all depends on how searchable and generally well-maintained the codebase is. Having some obscure critical function hidden in a monolith is totally possible too.
marmshallow··on You're Allowed to Write Slow Rust Code
Context is key. Are these folks mentioned in the article programming for fun or for profession? If it’s the former, that certainly is the time for silly optimizations.
marmshallow··on How Many Decimals of Pi Do We Really Need? (2016)
What is it about hexadecial that makes this happen?
marmshallow··on 91% of plastic isn't recycled (2018)
What kinds of things do you mold it into?
marmshallow··on Why is America running out of water?
If we're fantasizing: ban cows, or at least eating them. Increase the health of ourselves and our children.
marmshallow··on Applebot
Their cloud-based Notes App is simply killer. Sure, it’s a simple app but I have had a flawless experience on it.

Photos is pretty great too, but I’m not sure how it compares to other photo services.

marmshallow··on Facebook isn’t happy about Apple’s upcoming ad tracking restrictions
Welp, don't hold your breath. Facebook has 1.79B people on the side daily, 2.7B on monthly, and $18B in revenue in the last 3 months alone. It's going to be a while before that momentum slows down and/or collapses.
marmshallow··on Level 3 Global Outage
