mathgeek··on DoorDash to acquire Instacart
You can’t really refuse their business if they want you to be on the app. They will just add you and direct the driver to pay with the issued card like any other customer. The consumer still sees it as “you accept DoorDash orders” though. Then the sales pressure starts since they have your customers.
mathgeek··on US Reps Lead Democratic Resolution Opposing A.I. Bubble Bailout for Big Tech
You’re not wrong.
mathgeek··on Challenge Is Gone
Come join those of us that enjoy solving problems at work but aren’t driven by it. The water is fine, the weather is usually decent, and the existential terror of “failing” goes away eventually. We have the same problems and worries but sleep a bit better when things go wrong.
mathgeek··on Airbnb bans making guests do dishes and take out the trash
Same. I have consistently left feedback that even the idea of such policies makes me choose airbnb less. Haven’t used them in several years now due to the possibility.
mathgeek··on Are we sleepwalking into World War III?
That's usually what happens when making pop culture references.
mathgeek··on DeepInfer: High-performance inference framework for DeepSeek models
I assume they need these models to stop being replaced in 1-2 months though.
mathgeek··on AfD Leak: What 421,179 Hacked Emails Show about the German Far Right
It wasn't so long ago in America that having a private email server was actually the main complaint about a presidential candidate. Everyone knows that they all do it one way or another.
mathgeek··on How Far Will AI Assistants Go for a Refund They Can't Get?
We joke but you know there will be AI Judges on reality TV soon enough.
mathgeek··on Are we sleepwalking into World War III?
Were pie and punch served?
mathgeek··on NY announces game ownership bill requiring ownership rather than licensing
Sure, no problem there and good examples of what I mean.
mathgeek··on Show HN: The Zelda timeline to catch up before the Ocarina of Time remake
We can enjoy them for what they are. A bunch of fans arguing online doesn’t detract from the majority who will just play the game and enjoy it.
mathgeek··on Show HN: The Zelda timeline to catch up before the Ocarina of Time remake
It’s the second remake for OoT (it had a DS version as well). It holds similar status to FF7 in that it was the first 3D version of its franchise and brought a lot of new blood into the fanbase.
mathgeek··on NY announces game ownership bill requiring ownership rather than licensing
No reasonable person walked out of a Blockbuster thinking they permanently owned a rented film. There are plenty of transfers of currency without implied ownership.
mathgeek··on Publishers Killed the Paperback, Then Blamed Readers
> and may last generations

Having the survivors of the Great Depression around was amazing as far as mindsets go. I miss those folks.

mathgeek··on Publishers Killed the Paperback, Then Blamed Readers
Our daughter went the bathtub route when we unscrewed the lights in her room. Was proud of her but thankfully she started getting to sleep eventually.
mathgeek··on Show HN: PS2 games statically recompiled to WebAssembly
Sounds like the epitome of amazing for its time but not a powerful computer.
mathgeek··on Deloitte falsified documents to evade tax on Abramovich's wealth
2003 is, though. Apologies if I missed anything but a quick ctrl-f on the articles didn't find anything for 2013.
mathgeek··on NYC's "Click to Cancel" rule is now in effect
The cancellation fee is usually the part that's buried.
mathgeek··on IRCv3
Only if you ignore the banking industry.
mathgeek··on I'm the AGI that's wiping out humanity
For the future, yes. The past is binary. Unless you meant from the angle of time not existing, in which case I don't recall the modeling.
mathgeek··on Show HN: Quake ported to safe Rust, playable in browser
Those who remember the time before a new technology will always have a different world view than those raised with it. Some of us will prefer it, some of us won’t. Eventually no one will remain who remembers. That’s just how humanity works.
mathgeek··on Why isn't the industry freaking out about DeepSeek 4.1 Flash?
Regardless of the time, people have always happily accepted more.
mathgeek··on New repository settings for configuring pull request access
I imagine in order to really notice this in the course of your routine, you'd usually be either maintaining open source repos (exposed to the vast amounts of AI-driven PRs), or submitting PRs to open source regularly.
mathgeek··on Weight-loss drugs show signs of slowing biological aging, say drugmakers
Sounds like it's the already known "being overweight raises your biological age" and they're just acknowledging the inverse.
mathgeek··on I'm the AGI that's wiping out humanity
You can only know something is wiped out, and thus that it was being wiped out, after the fact. Anything else is a statistical guess.
mathgeek··on Your body of work thinks back at you
I try to emphasize with everyone. I fail, more often than I succeed.
mathgeek··on Why don't more developers “use the platform”?
> But for many developers, this sounds like fun! Think of how much you learn as you start building this thing.

I got a good chuckle when my brain finished this sentence with "and promptly forget so that you can learn it all over again years later the next time you need to touch that topic".

mathgeek··on DraftKings is using AI to behaviorally target chronic gamblers
You’re drawing a line between physical and emotional/mental addiction. You are correct that they differ. That doesn’t imply one is not an addiction. It’s similar to comparing the levels of Maslow’s hierarchy.
mathgeek··on DraftKings is using AI to behaviorally target chronic gamblers
So would banning air travel, but such an example is purely to highlight how subjective “a win for society” is.
mathgeek··on California farmers are struggling to sell grapes as demand for wine drops
Sorry, but what way do you think I feel about pot? I was just providing anecdotal examples to explain the reasoning of why pot being legal could have an impact on demand for wine. It’s just a demand curve relationship, not my personal opinions on the legality of pot.

For the pot smokers who care about legality, it does matter for folks who have to take drug tests for their jobs. Several of my good friends stopped using it when that was a concern.
