Fun fact: If Jupiter's magnetic field could be seen with the naked eye, it would appear larger than Earth's moon.

matthodan··on How I see the music industry of the future
I think this is true today, but timeless and classic music comes from creativity. And creativity is a trial and error process of building on prior approaches and techniques. Randomly testing new approaches and techniques by blending and extending past approaches and techniques seems like something generative AI (with human prompting and targeted supplementation) would be particularly good at.
matthodan··on How I see the music industry of the future
All great questions. With these generative AI tools, the effort required for making quality music has dramatically decreased. The big challenge becomes how do you stand out in a very crowded market. To break out, I think you almost need to have other artists (or influencers) who have already made it validate your work and expose you to their audiences.

matthodan··on Domains for the Rest of Us
What I'd really want is this service but put "software", "capital", "health", "app", etc. at the end of each domain. I bet there are some pretty interesting company names available if you add a suffix.
matthodan··on Domains for the Rest of Us
I wish there was a way to specify a prefix or suffix.

matthodan··on Launch HN: Modern Labor (YC W19) – Paying People to Learn to Code
How about expanding beyond coding? The U.S. has a shortage of skilled people that goes well beyond coding. E.g. machinists, pilots, nurses, etc.

Also, I think your business model would be much more scalable if you left the educating to others and instead focused narrowly on being a financial program.

matthodan··on Printing Money Goes Haywire in Venezuela
Another way to generate inflation is by increasing the velocity of money in an economy-- i.e. people spending money faster by borrowing more and saving less. Doing so increases the amount of money in the economy, but instead of the source being a printing press it is a bank balance sheet.
matthodan··on Facebook launches Nearby Friends
I created a similar service a while back at http://www.nearbyfriends.com. Here is a video describing the launch: http://vimeo.com/15039067. I later added proximity alerts so you could see when your Facebook friends check in near you. Funny to see Facebook launch a similar "Nearby Friends" three years later.
matthodan··on Ask HN: How do you find out about startup parties/events?
What if you don't live nearby? How would someone from San Francisco find out about parties/events in New York or Houston?
matthodan··on Show HN: A small weekend project - Distraction Free Writing
Just a thought, but you could update the title of the page to be the text in the first line of the document. This would make it easier to identify your work later when switching between windows.
matthodan··on Show HN: A small weekend project - Distraction Free Writing
I find that there is something satisfying about the sound of a keyboard. I guess I use to think of it at the sound of progress back in college. :)
matthodan··on Show HN: A small weekend project - Distraction Free Writing
I love the sound effects when you type, though it would be nice if you could toggle them on/off. Great work!
matthodan··on The Immediate Future of Jekyll
You can add support for preprocessors like CoffeeScript to Jekyll fairly easily via a plugin. I created Jekyll Asset Pipeline for this purpose. http://www.matthodan.com/2012/11/22/jekyll-asset-pipeline.ht...

matthodan··on Show HN: Jekyll Asset Pipeline (v0.1.0 released)
With v0.1.0, you can now:

  - Run multiple preprocessors on an asset via nested extensions (e.g. .css.sass.erb)
  - Turn off asset bundling via a config variable (good for debugging)
  - Automatically create Gzip versions of assets
The codebase is also cleaner and fully tested.

matthodan··on Ask HN: Question regarding non-technical cofounder
I'd start by exploring what his expectations are-- you might find that he doesn't see much of a role for himself. I believe it is better to be a single founder when you are at the idea generation and prototyping stage, particularly when you are working on a small business. Working alone helps you stay focused and ship without any distractions from co-founder drama. Once you have something that feels promising, then go look for a co-founder.

If your acquaintance is OK taking a back seat for the first iteration, then I think your problem is solved. If not, then you should have a frank discussion about what each of you will bring to the table. Even small businesses are a ton of work. At a minimum, you could offload the less technical work so that you can stay focused. Perhaps he focuses on connecting with the customer while you build the prototype? Most founders underestimate the value of connecting with the customer in the early days and in turn don't allocate enough of their time/energy to this task.

matthodan··on Jekyll Asset Pipeline: A Powerful CSS/JS Asset Packager for Jekyll
I had some free time over Thanksgiving break, so I decided to build an asset pipeline for Jekyll. There are a bunch of improvements that I have in mind, but I wanted to get this out there for others to see. In its current form, this plugin covers my basic needs. The real question is: Will anyone else find this useful? I know that I will use it, but I'm not sure if it is worth my time to smooth out the rough edges. Thanks in advance for any feedback!
matthodan··on Stripe Button (beta)
Definitely need to add a close button at the top right of that window. Otherwise, nice work! :p
matthodan··on Chrome redirecting to blank.html on search
Thanks-- worked for me.
matthodan··on Facebook shares hit again as valuation doubts rise
I'm long and strong $FB via the IPO, but I think we're going to have a year of pain before we're in the clear. Facebook needs to prove that they can continue grow-- not an easy feat for a company with huge market share. I want to see Facebook redefine the market by developing better ways to monetize the social graph (duh!). I think mobile has potential, particularly outside of the US, but success will require great execution. It will be interesting to see if Facebook can retain talent with options priced off the public valuation and a stock that is stagnating (or worse, declining).
