As a clear example, here's Darth Vader voiced by the actor who played him before James Earl Jones' voice was inserted https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KQFho0_G1VI

Imagine how different Star Wars would be without Jones.

> Considering that no human will be able to sift through these in no less than a team-decade

How do you figure that? For ETH, OpenAI is engaging with top experts in this area. It's unlikely that they'll need 10 man-years combined to go through the results:

> This work will be verified and shepherded by a group led by Russell Impagliazzo (UC San Diego), Ramamohan Paturi (UC San Diego), and Ryan Williams (MIT). All three are experts in algorithm design and complexity theory.

> Impagliazzo and Paturi, along with Francis Zane, are the original proposers of the Exponential Time Hypothesis, and have authored a number of influential papers on the topic over the last 30 years.

> Williams has refuted strong versions of the ETH, used ETH for hardness results, and connected algorithms and lower bounds.

The 2012 movie "Travelling Salesman" is a thought provoking film that explores this scenario.

The more frightening reality is people turning to AI to do research on who to vote for and the AI is silently told to influence them towards a party it candidate. Since it has past chat history it can utilize that to highlight topics you are interested in and personalize the arguments.

If you have, then I'd say no. They know what it's about and what to expect. If you haven't, then yes, it's a waste of their time.

mattm··on Tell HN: I picked up knitting while waiting for my AI agent to complete
haha, I haven't picked up knitting but I've been working on https://alcubi.ai/delegator/ to help solve this problem. For me, I ended up trying to work on new tasks while waiting for the agent to complete. This led to me getting frustrated with too much context switching. The solution I settled on was a configurable, rate-limited queue to prevent too much work from piling up.

mattm··on The super intelligence shit is a humiliation ritual for OpenAI
https://www.whitehouse.gov/presidential-actions/2026/09/inau...

> The terminology used by the Federal Government should reflect the transformative capabilities of these technologies and the limitless opportunities they create for the American people. Accordingly, the term “Super Intelligence” more appropriately captures the promise, potential, and rapidly advancing capabilities of these technologies. It is therefore the policy of my Administration that, to the maximum extent permitted by law, the executive branch shall use the terms “Super Intelligence” and “SI” in place of “Artificial Intelligence” and “AI” and will not acknowledge the usage of “Artificial Intelligence” and “AI” in any applicable setting.

mattm··on Show HN: What a major earthquake does to Vancouver
That's fine. I would still emphasize trying to make it easy for people to get their kits together. Having someone go from no kit to a poor kit is still infinitely better. If you don't have links, something like a clear list of items would be something that I would find helpful.

For example you say "Keep enough water, food and essential supplies for every person and pet in the home for at least two weeks". Ok, how much water is that? Is a pack of water bottles enough?

Some feedback:

- It's obviously AI created

- There's way too much text

Visuals tell a story faster and leave a bigger impact than a wall of text. Is there a way you could turn some of the most important messages into visuals? For example, "it could take weeks to restore electricity" - having a calendar view or animation of this with perhaps comparable situations that happened elsewhere.

For food and water, show pictures of what someone should have on hand for a family of 4.

Your main message is go buy water and canned food but that doesn't appear until 3/4 of the way down the page. Research kits that people can buy at their favourite local stores or online and have a clear call to action for people to buy one of them now. If someone visits and leaves the page by buying a kit without reading any of the information, that's going to help them way more than reading and absorbing all the info but without buying a kit. If there's no good kits that you think are worth buying, that could be a good business opportunity. Make your own and sell that.

The sources take up way too much space. That section could be made much smaller.

mattm··on What should we tell our students?
It's not a good analogy because the ball is constrained inside a court with fixed rules about how it can travel. No one can predict accurately how AI is going to change things. Look at all the predictions so far. We have the whole spectrum from "the end of humanity" to "utopia".
mattm··on You're saving one minute and now I can't know if I'm talking a human
haha, yeah those sound weird. In fairness though, people would basically get the same stuff pre-AI. I do find myself wondering quite often if I reply to someone, if I'm just replying to a bot. Sometimes it's easy to tell if something is written by AI but it might be tougher in the future.
mattm··on Ask HN: Why hasn't AI replaced Tax filing software
Why do you assume so?
mattm··on Ask HN: Why hasn't AI replaced Tax filing software
This is a common misconception. The IRS is generally reasonable. They will send you notices about mistakes on your tax forms. I think it's the tax filing industry that perpetuates the myth that making mistakes on your tax form can lead to you going to jail.

Having said that, I used Claude to do my taxes this year. I generally use the free fillable forms provided by the IRS so I don't use a program that tries to abstract it all away. It was much easier to do with Claude than manually this year.

Going back in time it's likely because the Sunday paper was traditionally the largest edition of the week. It would normally have a lot more sections to it. You'd have special features like the Sunday comics and they would be in color, not black & white like the rest of the week. The paper would usually be a bit more expensive as well ie. $2 instead of $1. I'm guessing it likely reached a larger audience.

lol, I feel old now talking about this :)

This made me look up when the rules about posting in the newspaper went into effect. I was surprised to find that it was 2005. This is much later than I thought. I would have guessed the 90s. By 2005, it was clear that the newspaper industry was dying due to the internet. I guess this is one example of how out of touch government can be.

Someone else mentioned in the thread elsewhere about whether the rules would need Congressional approval. Gemini says that these are purely an agency regulation and the Department of Labor can update them at anytime. It's kind of mind-boggling that no administration has updated them in 20+ years.

mattm··on Trump administration is suspending Microsoft from a green card program
Oh I completely get the point that it's an out of date practice. However, it is the current rule. You can't say that it's only these specific companies that do that. Every company that files for employment-based green cards does this. Yes, if the government wants to change that then they should change the actual rules, not just try to guilt companies into doing something different.
mattm··on You're saving one minute and now I can't know if I'm talking a human
So in this case there is a person at the other end. They decided to just use an LLM to write the message instead of writing it themselves. It sounds like it's different from pure spam that you're getting.

If you're looking for the human touch, what about trying to offer a 15-minute zoom call instead if they want to discuss something with you? That way you'll know they're human (at least for now) and you get to connect about a shared interest.

I agree that it's a problem. I think shouting into the void isn't going to change anything. It's just going to get worse. It's similar to how I never answer my phone anymore due to spam unless the call is from a saved contact...and even then it's not 100% reliable.

I don't really see how this relates to my comment about the connection between benefits and employment.

Just copying the actual newspaper part here:

(B) Advertisements in newspaper or professional journals.

(1) Placing an advertisement on two different Sundays in the newspaper of general circulation in the area of intended employment most appropriate to the occupation and the workers likely to apply for the job opportunity and most likely to bring responses from able, willing, qualified, and available U.S. workers.

(2) If the job opportunity is located in a rural area of intended employment that does not have a newspaper with a Sunday edition, the employer may use the edition with the widest circulation in the area of intended employment.

(3) The advertisements must satisfy the requirements of paragraph (f) of this section. Documentation of this step can be satisfied by furnishing copies of the newspaper pages in which the advertisements appeared or proof of publication furnished by the newspaper.

(4) If the job involved in the application requires experience and an advanced degree, and a professional journal normally would be used to advertise the job opportunity, the employer may, in lieu of one of the Sunday advertisements, place an advertisement in the professional journal most likely to bring responses from able, willing, qualified, and available U.S. workers. Documentation of this step can be satisfied by providing a copy of the page in which the advertisement appeared.

No it's because there was wage control during WWII. Employers started offering it as a benefit to get around the caps.

Those are literally the rules of what you need to do. Well, except the small-town newspaper part. Pick up the Sunday San Francisco Chronicle and you'll see pages of these ads.
