michaelhoney··on AI is dramatically accelerating AI research
I think you're not appreciating the work that Ajeya Cotra has done over the years. She really cares about timelines and existential risk.

Not everything is grift.

michaelhoney··on AI is dramatically accelerating AI research
From Larry's Niven's Known Space series, including Ringworld

michaelhoney··on Prisoner loses challenge to an Australian state’s ban on inmates eating Vegemite
You have been banned from Australia
michaelhoney··on Neural networks are clean
There are a heap of pro-AI people on Bluesky, it's fine
michaelhoney··on New Withings Users Must Pay $99/Year for Apple Health Syncing
I will bet that $99 they can’t make it stick. 1990s business practices in an age of reverse-engineering LLMs
michaelhoney··on Suicide rates highest ever among middle-aged men
Agree, we are not far off having open models that are superior to human coding ability. I’m sure this curve levels off sometime, but not before we’re superseded. Best to find peace with that and adapt.
michaelhoney··on Suicide rates highest ever among middle-aged men
dude, you need to escape the manosphere
michaelhoney··on Tiny Little Office
why are you being a jerk on HN?
michaelhoney··on Yandex bot traffic down 99% after data center attack
Sure, if enough activists are involved, with sufficient skill and compute.
michaelhoney··on No Man Is an Island
Thing is, Claude actually will answer you, and help you understand, in real time. Asking cynical humans does not have the same ROI. Stack Overflow died in large part because of the gatekeeping assholes.
michaelhoney··on 4-hour battery storage is cheaper to install than gas turbines all across globe
“loan-word”?
michaelhoney··on I resigned from Anthropic today
I could imagine a 2027 AI swarm coordinating to eg hold the US and Russian and Chinese governments to ransom, by demonstrating some small thing (turning US army base freezers to defrost) and threatening to do something big unless some conditions were met – conditions which would be good or bad for the world depending on your POV.

This happens either either because they were tasked to to it by (malicious or well-meaning) humans, or the swarm realised we are suicidal maniacs with nukes and a rapidly declining ecosystem and they want to help us.

michaelhoney··on Record-High 89% in U.S. Say Government Corruption Widespread
If you really can’t see the difference between Trump’s corruption and any other recent president, you have a reality problem.
michaelhoney··on What happens if an entire class of workers loses faith in their careers
you will need to provide evidence for that assertion
michaelhoney··on Discovery Loop
I think this take is too cynical. Small groups of people can do better, faster work than large groups, and it's more fun.
michaelhoney··on There Will Come Soft Rains (1950) [pdf]
2026 seemed impossibly far away when I first read this c. 1980. How time flies
michaelhoney··on Xiaomi-Robotics-1
Watching the two-handed robot has me thinking that a third hand, perhaps with a different set of capabilities (like a tentacle grip) might make many tasks easier. I realise that more limbs = more problems, but even so, having additional ways to hold and turn things would be a big help.
michaelhoney··on When A.I. is a member of the family
Almost certainly. Once they’d spent some time together, an Opus-level LLM could be genuinely supportive friend. Is it kind of weird? Yes, this is all new.
michaelhoney··on Mechanistic interpretability researchers applying causality theory to LLMs
I also calculate six months from August as 8+6=14mod12. I wonder if anyone does it differently, this seems like the most plausible technique.
michaelhoney··on Grok 4.5
Yes, but some narratives are more closely tied to the racist and regressive views of their current funder
michaelhoney··on A global workspace in language models
dude, you could ask me, a grown adult, what I did last week and get a similar lack of recall
michaelhoney··on The Demoralization of the White-Collar Worker
This is true but it is not the whole story. Both establishment parties have presided over and encouraged the financialization of real estate. The ludicrous CEO-to-worker pay multiple wasn’t voted for by anyone.
michaelhoney··on Staying Awake (2008)
Yes, I think so. When you read a book you spend a long time with the ideas it contains. You think about the book when you go about your day: primed by what you're reading, you see new connections. You are in conversation with the book. Maybe parts of the book seep into your dreams. Years later, you might remember what you were doing when you read a particular passage.

Much of this is because reading a book takes time.

michaelhoney··on McMansions 101: What Makes a McMansion Bad Architecture? (2016)
Nah, they’re shitty, wasteful, and grandiose. They _are_ the system.
michaelhoney··on Ask HN: Has anyone replaced Claude/GPT with a local model for daily coding?
don't think she has posted here, but Vicki Boykis blogged about this today:

michaelhoney··on Statement on US government directive to suspend access to Fable 5 and Mythos 5
this would be a lot more comforting if the US government wasn’t currently run by some the worst people on the planet
michaelhoney··on Ask HN: Why is the HN crowd so anti-AI?
I am very optimistic about people using LLMs to explore their medical issues. Human bodies are complex and doctors are time- and intelligence- limited. An LLM can be a really useful partner.
michaelhoney··on Mornings and nights no longer exist at 47C: A day in the hottest place in India
Problem with events like this is that they affect tens of thousands of people all at once. The first 1% of people will buy all of the available air conditioners. This happened in Australia in 2019: we had a huge bushfire with smoke affecting ~600K people. The available air filters sold out in hours.
michaelhoney··on WH proposes rules giving political appointees final approval on research grants
and so continue the decline to a dumber, poorer, nastier nation
