midtake··on GitLab Security Incident: Attempted Exploitation of CVE-2026-97229
Zero trust is more like you need strong authentication like FIDO on the webapp even if it's behind the VPN, not that you get rid of defense in depth.
midtake··on Root shell on Samsung TV
What a load of shit. Samsung TV always listening if you enable listening, why would they do this? /s

How dare they run a classifier locally on the TV, they should upload it uncut to Czechia like Amazon did with their ring cameras!

midtake··on Today, we hacked what we'd set out to hack: the iPhone
Does Lockdown block all PDFs?
midtake··on PHP 8.2.35
Everything associated with PHP is terrible. The fractal of bad design isn't limited to just the programming language. It's time to dump PHP.
midtake··on Tell HN: I unknowingly broke the PHP RCE embargo. I am sorry.
Nah, you just repeated something that to you was a rumor.
midtake··on eMudhra to exit global SSL/TLS certificate business
"out of proportion to SSL/TLS’s place in our business" is an insane comparison. They are saying they care so little about SSL/TLS to begin with that it's not fair.

It would be like me practicing surgery 1 hour a week and saying "well surgery only has a very small place in my 80-hour work week" in response to flagrant failure of medical care.

midtake··on Ukraine claims first drone evacuation of wounded soldier
Weakened only in the personnel sense. In terms of industrialization for war and acquisition of modern warfare tactics, we have made them considerably stronger.
midtake··on Apple's new 'Switch to Safari' campaign details why you should ditch Chrome
As I remember it, Chrome was way faster than Firefox, but I was in high school and probably stupid. Firefox wouldn't catch up to Chrome until Quantum, which was amazing when it first dropped, but now Firefox is slow again.
midtake··on FDA may allow some toxic chemicals to be added to food without safety review
Humiliation ritual
midtake··on FDA may allow some toxic chemicals to be added to food without safety review
I rather like the MAHA messaging, particularly when they claim that Europe has safer food standards and we have to catch. It disappoints me that RFK Jr might just be either corrupt or a useful idiot to chemical companies.
midtake··on FDA may allow some toxic chemicals to be added to food without safety review
Inhalation is different from ingestion, for one. I can handle gallons of liquid hydrogen cyanide, but it takes much less than that to kill me if it contaminates my food. The articles say perchlorates are harmful at 0.5 ppb. That's pretty demanding, so to me the article makes sense.
midtake··on GPT‑6 and Intelligent UI for everyone
Good. "Sexual content" should mean outright genital focused porn, not bikini girls. Elsewhere on the internet it's foretold that women will oppose AI images of women because the AI images are too attractive, and I'm starting to wonder if that's true.
midtake··on cp: -r or -R?
Honestly I just rsync everything
midtake··on Microsoft exec called AI scraping 'the largest theft of labor in human history'
Are you comparing modern workplace aches and gripes to literal 1800s slavery?
midtake··on No AI Fridays
This is a paradigm shift. If you know basic arithmetic, a calculator doesn't stop you from knowing how to add or multiply. But AI definitely stops you from learning how to reason. So it's not the same at all.
midtake··on Humanity has the debate about AI consciousness backwards
Neanderthals live on in the human genome, they are genetically integrated into all non-Sub Saharan African humans alive today, it is their hunter-gatherer society that disappeared. It is thought they also had larger brains than humans. Maybe it is us who were not quite to their level.
midtake··on Stop eating Lady Gaga's Oreos
Why is this domain trending all of a sudden on HN? Three articles all highly upvoted.
midtake··on CIA funding helped keep NeXT afloat in the 80s
Why didn't you just not give blood that day?
midtake··on Google has acquired the data of failed US airline Spirit
At least this has ostensibly a mission-driven purpose, to improve automated customer support.

When someone less scrupulous than Google starts buying up Snapchat and Kik and Roblox (and other such platforms) and piecing together social graphs with extracurricular activities that's when it will be a lot more dramatic.

midtake··on OpenLogi
So you trusted 22-year-old coffee junkies copying and pasting from stack overflow 10 years ago but when a language model does it it's suddenly offensive? We should be instead celebrating how we have a mini software company at our fingertips ready to fix the broken hobbyist shit we've never had time for. OpenLogi is a perfect example of this use case and that it's open source makes it more trustworthy not less.

Now if only there was one for Razer.

midtake··on And then the men with guns tell you to do it anyway
This article is painfully shortsighted about Egypt's moment in the Arab Spring.

(1) the problematic Vodafone message in question is presented as "without attribution" but it very clearly starts with the words "The Armed Forces asks"!

(2) it makes it seem like the government was naturally unpopular in Egypt and clinging on to power in desperate ways when in reality the online anti-state dissent turned out to be astroturfed by "shadowy" Western organizations, which ironically ended up being the Islamic Brotherhood's ace up their sleeve as their justification for taking control.

So basically, wtf is his point regarding the Arab Spring? The author sounds painfully naive like it's still 2011, this sort of deliberate naivete makes it difficult for me to trust the rest of the article.

midtake··on Apple announces changes for apps in the European Union
Because phones are surveillance devices people happen to casually carry everywhere, so the stakes are considerably higher.
midtake··on I requested a copy of my data from McDonald’s loyalty program
Looks pretty normal to me. The data is kept and used internally for business objectives. This isn't like Uber mining users for information on whether they had sex.[1]

midtake··on The brain may be about to have its Ozempic moment
The article is about modulating orexins in the brain. Orexin receptor agonism was thought to be a mechanism of modafinil/armodafinil but this isn't mentioned anywhere in the article. Modafinil is mentioned as a mere stimulant. It sort of makes me want to dismiss the article as manufactured hype for a new class of modafinil successors.
midtake··on The US tried to stop cartel money-laundering; devastated mom-and-pop businesses
Positive effects aside, legalizing recreational drugs will not eliminate the cartels, but instead will reroute the distribution of their product through "legal" channels. The cartels have sufficient power that the only move left is their integration with established markets. They aren't just going to lie flat while "legitimate" corporations take their spot.

Legalizing has other benefits though, like increasing scrutiny into human- and arms-trafficking, a legitimized drug business will need to shed that part somehow and hide it.

midtake··on App Store Rejection of the Week: Dark Hours
But then you're lying. Why not add the comment "no tarot function" without reference to whether it existed in the past? A bit confusing because it's a trivial and seemingly unrelated statement but at least then you wouldn't be lying.
midtake··on Adults over 65 will outnumber children by 2029
If that were true, US policy and trends would reflect that. Instead, as groups, we are seeing earning potential decreased in the young and wealth increase in the old. This is a dysgenic shift. Coupled with AI, which when viewed as a force against labor is a product that reduces the earning potential of the young cohort as a group, this is not sustainable. The lack of stability and opportunity for young people is the sort of stuff that leads to revolution.
midtake··on GPT-5.6
You shouldn't know too much about biology, stupid human. You might live your life in an unexploitable way.
midtake··on Suspecting AI cheating, Ivy League prof ordered in-person final; scores fell 50%
I agree that they are intelligent, just don't know about the "definition" part. A typical Ivy Leaguer isn't a dumbass. What's wrong with calling one intelligent?

Try visiting a Walmart and interacting with literally anyone. That's the average. Let's not allow our egos to gatekeep who we consider intelligent, fellow HNians.
