Manufactured Scarcity is the new post-scarcity
mikercampbell··on Allegations of insider trading over prediction-market bets tied to Iran conflict
I know it’s cliche, but I hate this timeline.

For a good while there, the headlines went from “oniony” to “sim-city news headline flavor text” to “I can’t believe I share a finite existence with the people being discussed”

mikercampbell··on A selfie with Netanyahu turns into an employee and customer exodus
> A few days ago, the CEO of Vercel—an AI coding startup that, as of Tuesday, raised a $300 million Series F at a $9 billion—posted a selfie with Prime Minister of Israel Benjamin Netanyahu. Vercel is a product for AI developers that companies like Meta are investing heavily in in order to develop their AI faster than competitors.

As an aside, when was Vercel ever an AI company? I’ve been (past tense, but I left a bit ago) a customer for years and it was a “hosting service with convenient feature bundling”.

Labeling everyone an AI company is watering down so much detail and nuance to put it lightly.

mikercampbell··on Ring introducing new feature to allow police to live-stream access to cameras
We’re going to get a news article of aome cop is going to be scanning for his ex-girlfriend, I guarantee it
mikercampbell··on Manifest: A 1-file micro-back end
Something that follows this pattern of a single file backend is PocketBase. I’ve used it on personal projects and, while not being 1.0 yet, it’s growing quickly
mikercampbell··on Ask HN: What less-popular systems programming language are you using?
Why elm over LiveView?

I know “why” elm, I liked everything I saw about it, but how do you combine the two, if you do?

mikercampbell··on Even Microsoft Notepad is getting AI text editing now
I’ve loved/hated it taking over IDEs. The refactor lightbulb icon popover slowly losing features to “fix with copilot” has been draining
mikercampbell··on QNX is now free for anything non-commercial, plus there's an RPi image
I mean, I figured it out from HN but still.
mikercampbell··on QNX is now free for anything non-commercial, plus there's an RPi image
With all due respect, I’ve never spent so long clicking through a website trying to figure out what it actually was.

What is QNX haha

mikercampbell··on Independent directors of 23andMe resign from board
My HSA emailed me and said “woopsies, we leaked all your data”.

And…? You’re going to try and give me credit monitoring when I literally have 2 overlapping credit monitoring offers from the other companies that leaked my data?

mikercampbell··on Show HN: Yet Another Habit Tracker
This looks super clean!! I’m bookmarking it to check out!!
mikercampbell··on Viagra improves brain blood flow and could help to prevent dementia
I had my hopes up, but there is the kicker
mikercampbell··on Viagra improves brain blood flow and could help to prevent dementia
I vaguely recall an anecdote about athletes using it for performance improvement, and getting a slightly different stat buff
mikercampbell··on Spacetop – Meet the AR Laptop for Work
It looks like the glasses are actually manufactured by someone else, a company called XReal? I’m not sure if they’re related, but it looks like they’re not trying to invent two things at a time. Well, maybe the OS and the Laptop count
mikercampbell··on Why is no Laravel/Rails in JavaScript? Will there be one?
I am so sad that Blitz.js kind of… well, I’m not sure what it did, but it didn’t Ruby/Rails.

And my IDE had a reeeeally hard time keeping up because of its size. All the defaults were “sensible” as advertised, but the codebase was massive when I hopped off. Maybe it’s improved? This is my sign to check back in.

mikercampbell··on Show HN: Kubernates in Node.js
Not to be audacious, but I’m working on a post and will HN Show it, soon.

It’s called “lattice”, and it’s a software architecture with similar intentions as Kubernetes, but a vanilla approach that leans into existing frameworks instead of inventing things from scratch

mikercampbell··on Simulating Jupiter
I can almost feel the drops in my hair. But for real this is so cool
mikercampbell··on Suicide is on the rise for young Americans, with no clear answers
A lot of historians are drawing parallels between recent events and the events leading up to WW1. I’m not an expert, but it isn’t absurd to say that it could happen.
mikercampbell··on Private company landing on the moon today
I’m just glad it’s not something “too on the nose” comedically, like for Coca-Cola or something that makes me think of Wall-E. At least it’s a hiking/adventurey brand and not KFC.
mikercampbell··on Bevy 0.13: ECS-driven game engine built in Rust
Oh, I my case, I was actually creating a “headless” game, where my graphics were just in HTML and CSS because I’m more artistically enabled to make things using those instead of OpenGL!

And because I’m weird!

mikercampbell··on Tiny, tamper-proof ID tag can authenticate almost anything
I literally gasped after reading the synopsis. It is such an incredible idea, that seems strangely (and probably wildly incorrectly) simple.
mikercampbell··on DiskClick: Ever wanted to hear old hard drive sounds
I could smell this sound
mikercampbell··on Bevy 0.13: ECS-driven game engine built in Rust
Hey!! I’m on the same journey! Yew, but with Bevy ECS and HTML as my “rendering engine”.

Keep me posted!!

mikercampbell··on Dax – Cross-platform shell for Node.js
I think they’re using shell as the loose term for “shell script”, as in scripts you run in a shell.
mikercampbell··on Postgres as queue
It’s almost as if we were in an ordered line, all waiting to learn the same thing, and had the lesson delivered no more than once.
mikercampbell··on US developers can offer non-app store purchasing, Apple still collect commission
Are they toasters? Because I hear there might be some competition.

But genuinely, your comments enrich this sort of thing. I love your input.

mikercampbell··on NixOS: Declarative Builds and Deployments
This is why I come to the comments.

I’ve encountered NixOS through Replit and thought it was such a fantastic way to manage environments, when I’m using things like ASDF and Bash scripts for installs, I’d love this.

Then comes the question “I won’t commit to something like this and I don’t know why”, and you just articulated it for me.

mikercampbell··on eBay pays $3M fine in blogger harassment case
That is just another fascinating side effect of society that I never realized but makes complete, obvious sense.
mikercampbell··on Turing Complete is a game about computer science
A reviewer:

> You know a game is good when it has a verilog exporter.

mikercampbell··on Ask HN: What has quantum computing achieved so far?
Honestly, you also have to consider the sculptures they are.

I’m joking, but they absolutely had a different designer than the colliders
