misnome··on Incident with Pull Requests, Git Operations and Issues
At this point, even when there isn't an incident, push/pull have been so unreliable as to fail about 30% of the time.

I can live with the occasional outage but this is a constant problem.

misnome··on Tell HN: GitHub Is Down
Outages are one thing, but for the past couple of weeks even when everything is green, about 30% of pushes/pulls just outright fail.

I've been relatively tolerant of the outages, but this is constant and really intolerable, to the point I'm actively migrating projects into our internal company GitLab.

I really hope they can sort their shit out.

Edit: while ! git push; do sleep 5; done

5000 is the cursor number for people on the cursor version of the store, not the VSCode store.

Has anyone managed to confirm the time that the backdoored version was released? None of my machines updated to it, I am wondering if it was saved by a combination of luck and

misnome··on PhysicsForums and the Dead Internet Theory (2025)
Why would anyone go to a forum for AI-generated content when they could just ask the AI themselves?
misnome··on The Curse of Soldered RAM
Why bother with the expense if you are permanently soldering it in anyway?

misnome··on Roku developer repositories moved from GitHub to GitLab
GitLab is just as bad, just not as big so doesn't get the coverage. https://status.gitlab.com/pages/history/5b36dc6502d06804c083...

And of course many people self-host which changes a lot of the equation (which you can also do with GitHub, but not for free - and FWIW our self-hosted premium gitlab has about an hour a day downtime, which we've been told by the team responsible is an unavoidable side-effect of backing up gitlab).

misnome··on Your Phone Is About to Stop Being Yours: 70 Days Until Lockdown
It's exactly the same as the people crying conspiracy about parts-locking for repairability, not acknowledging the real effects it had on phone thefts and the pressure at the national and governmental level to help solve the epidemic.

I used to have an oven whose clock would display 23:60 before jumping to 00:01!

misnome··on Show HN: Nightwatch – a Mac menu-bar app that tells you when tonight is clear
If you are interested in smart scopes and don’t mind missing direct observation, the Seestars or Dwarf 3 mini are getting pretty affordable (I borrowed a Dwarf to observe the solar eclipse - it came with solar filter - and playing around with it at night was very happy and got me into the hobby pretty deep so far…)

clearoutside.com, which is pretty reasonable at predicting cloud cover, says it gets the data from Meteosource.

misnome··on Bug: Border radius has infected VSCode editor
Lots of unnecessary whitespace, tabs changing colour to be confusing about which is selected…

They hired a new design lead who wants to make their mark, didn't they.

misnome··on OpenAI Model Misalignment Report
I had my own “Misaligned AI” incident.

Whilst talking about debugging an electronics project I suggested that buying an oscilloscope would help diagnose a specific issue.

It “helpfully” pointed out a £15 logic analyser would do the job instead.

Traitor.

misnome··on Claude Session URL appended to commit messages and PR descriptions by default
Presumably quietly added default-on because everyone had turned attribution off.

Again, if you challenge it “It came from my harness instructions” and obviously telling it not to in memory is about as successful as… any other instruction in memory, about 60% of the time.

No, this is what they were doing before, but they explicitly started lending out "unlimited" copies, which is why they got sued.
