misrab··on Ask HN: Keybase Alternatives?
Ethereum.
misrab··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (May 2020)
Curious - what are you guys using Rust for?
misrab··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (May 2020)
Likewise - we use Figma at our company and it genuinely is an amazing product.

Also highly recommend ProductBoard. Fig + PB + Jira (yeh I know) can be a powerful pipeline.

misrab··on Build institutions, not apps
Reminds me of Fukyama's "Political Order and Political Decay", but in a more contemporary and narrow context. Interesting thought bubble, thanks for the read!
misrab··on A-Shell: Terminal for iOS
I'm seeing more and more dev tools being developed for mobile

e.g. yesterday on HN: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=22968079

Seems like there's pent up demand for more hacker stuff on mobile! :) I wonder what this could mean for the direction of the mobile paradigm (move towards fewer walled gardens like app stores please?)

misrab··on Stripe raises $600M at nearly $36B valuation
Would love Stripe to handle bank transfers as a payment method!

Many of our customers prefer this method over card payments. Then Stripe would fully cover our payment use-case; I'd love to use Stripe alone for payment, analytics and security. Right now we can't :(

misrab··on ICANN delays .org selloff after California’s attorney general intervenes
We need the Ethereum Naming System (ENS) as soon as possible.

Domain names will be one of the first major applications of global consensus algorithms.

misrab··on Why do you need a LinkedIn account?
To be fair HN is probably not LinkedIn's typical audience :P

I say this as a techie who embraced the Dark Side and started using LI a few years ago...

misrab··on IETF Response to “LS on New IP, Shaping Future Network”
Good (paywalled, unfortunately) article on China using this as a way to move the infrastructure to depend on Huawei-owned patents so they can cash in on that work.

misrab··on A lecture on differential equations using GNU TeXmacs [video]
Good content, but the speaker sounds really down!!

Hope all is well in life man!

misrab··on Ask HN: Book recommendations for understanding financial systems?
This is an online course, not a book, but it changed my understanding of finance. I studied Economics (initially) at university, and never found anything close to as useful as this class:

misrab··on Verlan: French slang that inverses words
As a French educated non-French, I must say: you've gotta love the French <3 :)
misrab··on Proposals for Go 1.15
As much as I hate to say it...I completely agree.

I'd love to see the reasoning behind breaking minimalist principles; otherwise it looks like complexity drift to me.

misrab··on Technology Preview: Signal Private Group System
Is it a coincidence this came up on HN at the same time Telegram is getting dissed on HN? Can't help but think it was coordinated...which is sad for HN
misrab··on Second known interstellar visitor after Oumuamua
Shields, duh...
misrab··on Coffee Is Hard
Love this!

> Avoiding premature death is a process of not occupying the same space as fast-moving metal or motivated microbes. Living is mostly a series of repetitive and unrelated tasks.

misrab··on End of an American tradition: Amtrak kills the traditional dining car
Simple question: why aren't trains a big thing in the US? They are in Asia and Europe.

Any readings on the topic much appreciated.

misrab··on Lectures in Quantitative Economics with Python [pdf]
FINALLY the field of Economics is waking up to the 20th (yes) century...

I've always loved the questions economics asks, but found the methodology for finding answers to miss out on ideas from computer science

misrab··on Go's updated generic proposal (Contracts)
If what Generics fundamentally solve is having to type out an almost identical function for many types, why not just have macros?
misrab··on Liu Cixin’s War of the Worlds
One can see your point, and indeed one may choose to sacrifice one's own freedom for material prosperity. But it is not analogous.

The question is whether one thinks it's fine to forcefully lock up a certain group of society for one's own, arguably, material benefit. It is easy to preach material security when the cost is born by another group.

misrab··on Liu Cixin’s War of the Worlds
"When I brought up the mass internment of Muslim Uighurs—around a million are now in reëducation camps in the northwestern province of Xinjiang—he trotted out the familiar arguments of government-controlled media: “Would you rather that they be hacking away at bodies at train stations and schools in terrorist attacks? If anything, the government is helping their economy and trying to lift them out of poverty.” The answer duplicated government propaganda so exactly that I couldn’t help asking Liu if he ever thought he might have been brainwashed. “I know what you are thinking,” he told me with weary clarity. “What about individual liberty and freedom of governance?” He sighed, as if exhausted by a debate going on in his head. “But that’s not what Chinese people care about. For ordinary folks, it’s the cost of health care, real-estate prices, their children’s education. Not democracy.”"
misrab··on Firefox Now Available with Enhanced Tracking Protection by Default
I hear you, but that's why the greedy optimisation of convenience above all gradually leads to the local mininum of a Brave New World.
misrab··on Google Cloud Is Down
Anything to do with China?
misrab··on Cancer Progress: Much More Than You Wanted To Know (2018)
Rather than starting with some personal anecdote contrived for some sort of empathy, as is the common style these days!

Thank you.

misrab··on A Survey of the First 20 Years of Research on Semantic Web and Linked Data [pdf]
Yes exactly.

It reminds me of the difference between Machine Learning in the earlier days, which was based on hard-coded features, compared to things like vector embeddings that derive semantics and semantic connections in a bottom-up manner.

misrab··on Deformities Alarm Scientists Racing to Rewrite Animal DNA
Exactly. It seems like we may want to develop more accurate models of how changing DNA and its environment affects its expression through (t)RNA, proteins, and reflexively itself, before making massive "production" changes in one go. In other words, perhaps we should be more methodical and patient in our approach? Curious what the experts have to say about this.
misrab··on Technorealism, Alvin Toffler, and the Forgotten Third Wave
Very articulate and thoughtful. It makes me happy that level-headed people like yourself exist.

I'm curious, where do people like yourself linger? What made you into a person who can respond as such? Are you an engineer who reads a lot? An academic?

Pardon me if that's direct, I just feel like understanding that may lead to an understanding of how to promote more level-headed discussion.

misrab··on Rust can be difficult to learn and frustrating, but it's also very exciting
Try writing a linked list in Rust...or implementing a graph. It's not intuitive I think?
misrab··on Putting This Blog on IPFS
Perhaps you're confusing IPFS and Filecoin? IPFS provides the storage and retrieval layer, while Filecoin allows for incentivised markets, to your point.
misrab··on High school physics course notes, with JavaScript simulations
