myrandomcomment··on Apple ML Research: Muse Spark Open with MLX on Mac Studio
I worked at a company where one of the pieces of hardware we were building at the time used a PowerPC CPU (this is back in ~2007). We had a rack of Apple xServe for build and test. The xServe was nice pieces of hardware compared to the x86 kit we had, more like Sun gear in their attention to detail and ease of use.

At my current company we compile for x86 and devs can do a full build and test environment on their laptops (which are 95% MacBook Pros) but it is unclear what will happen when Rosetta support is pulled. Now the interesting thing is we plan to move our stuff over to target the AWS Graviton (and other cloud ARM cores) as those instances are cheaper for generally the same performance (for what was are doing anyway) so the point will be moot. There will be some crossover point where having build and test servers in a rack will be cheaper than doing it in the cloud. At that point having Apple ARM based servers would be a win assuming we can build a binary that works for Graviton, et.al.

myrandomcomment··on Nissan's third generation e-POWER powertrain
As a follow up, went with a full EV. She is now away at a train camp for her EMT cert and there are nothing but slow Level 2 chargers around there. The good news is the car range is over 300 miles, so she will good. The nearest Level 3 faster charger is 45 miles away which is no issue for her trip home.
myrandomcomment··on Powerless F1 drivers frustrated by Bahrain F1 software glitch
On that first formation lap everyone was on Intermediate tiers. Some of the drives moved to the slicks on the restart.
myrandomcomment··on Powerless F1 drivers frustrated by Bahrain F1 software glitch
I agree. You can watch a lot of the old races on various YT channels and also in the F1 app (assuming you pay for it). There are some great races but most are pretty predicable for the big teams with the money, baring any random engine blow-ups.

The real issue is the cars are just too big and heavy. There was a point in time when you could pass someone even in Monaco.

myrandomcomment··on Nissan's third generation e-POWER powertrain
I agree in general, however there is one small issue here. First I have an EV and love it. I would not buy another gas car for myself or my wife. The issue is I need to purchase a car for my kid who is in the process of applying to medical school. Depending on where they go, an EV could be an issue. It is not that the school will not have chargers, it is that they will be living in an apartment which will likely have no place to charge. This is the reason I am looking at a hybrid.
myrandomcomment··on Fujitsu launches made-in-Japan next-generation CPU FUJITSU-MONAKA
I am in tech (okay now I am really wondering what % of people on here are NOT in tech). I have spent years in Japan for work, and ironically right now as I type this, I am sitting in a seat on JL2 from Tokyo to SFO. I worked with all of the large Japanese companies over the years and I can say Fujitsu has always been the most impressive, and to you comment, most like golden age IBM (I worked there for a brief time also). They, like IBM are most likely to have brilliant tech, and then shoot themself in the head for non-tech reasons.

myrandomcomment··on Jack Dorsey launches Buzz to combine team chat, AI agents and Git hosting
I agree. We have a leadership channel at work for well, the leadership team. Those conversations are sensitive. Evaluations, hiring bands, salaries, future product planning, markets, funding, etc. Access to that channel is strictly controlled. I am not worried about anyone taking a screenshot. In the case of allowing an AI agent to participate in the channel, I would be worried about that AI using information from that channel to answer a question outside of that channel. Keeping the agents "learnings" clearly behind a "firewall" would be of great importance.

Beyond that, the team are free to have private conversations between themselves. This is NOT something we log. At the end of the day, hiring good people and trusting them is important. The logic of making sure the AI does not leak those conversations also applies.

It is a new world, re:AI. It has its uses and things are changing at a rapid pace. It is not clear to be the protections we have implemented in todays paradigms are well implemented yet in the new AI world.

I can echo that sentiment. Shawn is a friend and a genuinely nice and interesting person.
myrandomcomment··on Five monitors on a Commodore 128 [video]
The C128 was introduced in January 1985 at the CES in Las Vegas, so 41 year. Read your post and thought, "I am not that old!"

I went from a VIC20 to C64 then to a C128D in 1987. Then moved a 486DX50 running OS/2 in 1990.

myrandomcomment··on How many of the 170k English words do you know?
89/100. Missed 4 in the advanced and 7 in the grandmasters. 100 is a lot to get through but hey I did learn 11 new words. There is one word I want to call out which made me laugh because I have felt it is just silly since I first heard my wife use it 30 years ago. Bumpershoot. I only knew the answer because of her. It is what her family calls an umbrella.
myrandomcomment··on Ubiquiti: Enterprise NAS, Built on ZFS
I paid ~$4900 in October 2021 for a TrueNAS MiniXL+ with 8x14TB, 2x480G SSD (L2ARC/ZIL) and 64GB RAM, 2x10Gbps, with 3 year support direct from IxSystems. The CPU is an 8 core Intel(R) Atom(TM) CPU C3758 @ 2.20GHzStill going strong. I had drive failure and they replaced it. I had a fan failure and they replaced the fans. The price of the UI kit in 2026 seems to be reasonable.
myrandomcomment··on 10Gb/s Ethernet: switching to a Broadcom SFP+ module
What standard of cable? When I rewired I ran Cat6a everywhere. My longest 10G run is ~70 meters and works just fine. Anytime I had a link issue it was because I did not do the best job in termination on the keystone jack.

To be clear the Cat6a is thicker than Cat6 and harder to work with. It makes termination a bit more tricky.

myrandomcomment··on Canvas online again as ShinyHunters threatens to leak schools’ data
1. It should be illegal for any company to pay ransomware attacks. Period. No pay out ever. 2. The penalty for being the attacker should be linked to the system they violated. If you do this to a hospital and someone dies you are life in prison / chair. The minimum sentence should be so painful that it deters the attack.

No this will not stop this and companies need to be held accountable for their lack of security investment. Every attack should be investigate if the company met an agreed industry standards best practices and staffing, etc. The penalties for not meeting the requirements should be punitive.

myrandomcomment··on 10Gb/s Ethernet: what I did to get it working in my home
I disagree. I pay $120 a month for 5Gbps symmetric connection. I could upgrade that to 10Gbps for 2x, but there is no reason at this point. Even the local max from the cable company is more than 1Gbps, 1.2Gbps down / ~300Mbps up for around $80. Everything is streaming now. I work from home, on video calls. My better half will be watching something the on AppleTV streaming, the kid will be doing the same. I have Backblaze running to do backups to the cloud. 3 different laptops that will run TimeMachine backups to the NAS. The AppleTVs also have the Infuse app on them to stream local video files from the NAS. The security cameras are a constant 60Mpbs 24/7/365 to the NVR. The laptops can push a gig wireless and 2.5Gbps when plugged into the Thunderbolt docks. It is not clear that I need 10Gbps everywhere, but it has its uses. The NAS is at 10G. The link from the main switch to the router is 10G. The 3 APs in the house are at 2.5G and the 2 outside are at 1G. There was a noticeable difference when after I right sized the shared links paths up from 1G. When I say noticeable it both perceived and measured. I used to work doing switch bring up and competitive testing so I have a pretty good idea how this all comes together. Given that a reasonably cheap set of APs can now handle clients at above 1G and internet speeds in some areas being above 1G, moving to at least 2.5G in places is useful and not divorced from reality. I am in tech, but I have help my not tech friends upgrade APs, et.al. for their normal everyday home use cases and they have all been quite happy with the change.

Not being divorced from reality is the only reason I have not dropped $5K on the new Dream Machine Beast that was just released and have not swapped out my Enterprise 48 PoE (1st gen.) for the newest version that has 12 10G-BaseT ports.

myrandomcomment··on Diatec, known for its mechanical keyboard brand FILCO, has ceased operations

myrandomcomment··on AI is killing B2B SaaS

myrandomcomment··on Porsche sold more electrified cars in Europe in 2025 than pure gas-powered cars
I own 2 cars, both Porsche. Mine is a 15 year old Boxster S. The wife has a brand new Macan 4S EV. It is a brilliant car. 280mi/450km @ 80% charge and no issues with the cold. It was 27F/-3.5C this morning.

I will never buy a gas car again. I plan to keep my Boxster until I can buy an EV version.

myrandomcomment··on JPMorgan Chase Reaches a Deal to Take over the Apple Credit Card
We use our Apple Card for most everything day to day as the application for it in Wallet is first rate. I can see all the family spending. Any issues I had were quickly resolved by use of the chat feature to support. The cash back on Apple products is great, as well as the interest free monthly payment for those items. To be clear, I am in a position to pay it off every month and never carry a balance on any card (beyond the interest free Apple HW).

The other card we use is an Amex Platinum. We are very careful to use all of its benefits and more than cover the yearly membership fee. For example, $100 credit once a quarter for meals booked via Resy, free Walmart+ which gets you free Paramount+ or Peacock. Amex then has a streaming credit that covers the other one every month. Booked a family trip with Amex and received over $500 in hotel credits at that property. Amex is also great about just sorting any issue quickly as well as sorting hard to get dinner reservations and concert tickets.

myrandomcomment··on A Wealth Tax Floated in California Has Billionaires Thinking of Leaving
There is existing rules that document the number of days you can be in the state of California, as well as types of assets, accounts that you can have, etc. that determine if you have to pay state income taxes. A large number of people in the past moved to the NV side of Lake Tahoe, traveling into CA for work. They found out quickly that it does not work. When I left CA, I closed all my accounts based in CA and got a new drivers license in WA in the first 30 days, turned in my old one, etc. I still received a letter from CA asking for details of my move.
myrandomcomment··on Germany's Porsche pauses shift to EVs as profits tank [video]
The wife owned the original 2015 Macan S. She loved it. A few months ago we leased a 2025 Macan 4S EV. It is a fantastic vehicle, much better than the gas version. Power is cheap here in WA. Premium gas at $4.50 p/g vs $.082 p/kHh. So that works out (rough) 100 miles cost $18 gas vs. $2.48 for the EV. No moving parts to fix, oil to change, etc. The EV wins hands down. I want an Electric Boxster to replace my old 2010 Boxster S. I will buy it as soon as they ship it.
myrandomcomment··on Apple M5 chip
I find this thread amusing. My M3 MacBook Pro just works. My family's iPhone 15s just work. My iPad Mini 6 just works. My wife's 3 year old iPad just works. Her 3 year old MacBook Air just works. My kids 3 year old M1 MacBook just works. I am an old man. My MCSE was on NT 3.51. I wrote my first code in 6502 ML. The first production network I handled used SNA. The level of Apple kit just working is a so far beyond anything I have experienced in 30+ years of being in tech.
myrandomcomment··on Porsche demonstrates inductive EV charging at IAA
Sitting in the passenger seat of the wife's Macan 4S EV right now. Installed 11.2KW charging for it. Had to stop at a super charger for 15 minutes as we had to take an unexpected long trip today and she never plugs it in until the car is at 30%. I would 100% install this in the floor. You park in the garage and it charges. It is perfect.
myrandomcomment··on The Limits of NTP Accuracy on Linux
The paths on the network with the MLAG is NOT likely the issue. There is a serialization delay different between the NICs in the NTP servers and switches. 100M takes more time then 1G which takes more time then 10G which takes more time then 40G. Also the UI kit is store and forward (not sure on the 10G but the desktop one is) switching and the Arista kit is cut thought (at around ~500 byte packets IIRC). The end to end paths are not the same given the link speed difference and that is the source of the variations. The MLAG hashing is in hardware and will not have an effect, also IIRC you can set the LAG hash to be SRC/DST on both L2 and L3 even on a L2 link.

The 68K lacked an MMU, so cooperative multitasking was really the only way to do it. Same reason MacOS and AmigaOS were cooperative multitasking.

myrandomcomment··on Windsurf employee #2: I was given a payout of only 1% what my shares where worth
I would like to understand a bit here about what you are saying as having been involved in a few startups and I do not quite understand what you are getting at. My understanding based on experience (successful exits, small exits and crash and burns) follow.

First a 409A is generally engineered to keep the lowest value possible in order to allow the employees to exercise their options at the lowest value via an 83b election so at an exit they can be taxed at the long term capital gains rate. When someone joins a startup and is issued options the value of the stock is set via the 409A (which has to be renewed every year). The lower the number the more likely an employee can afford to write the check. 100K shares at $0.01 vs at $0.25 is a major factor for anyone to consider. Any startup worth their damn will make sure the facts in any 409A fit a low number for that reason. The reality of an exit where you are acquired will be based on other numbers that optimize for forward earns and value of your team and tech.

The questions you need to ask are:

What is the total authorized shares? What is the required process to raise that number? How are we funded? Does funding include preferred shares? What is the preference on those shares? On an exit what is the payment order?

I agree about the salary bands and at my current company we provide them, as well as answering all the questions above upfront to any candidate with an offer.

The reality of windsurf is that the founders are scum and this is going to end up in court for years. Google should be ashamed.

myrandomcomment··on Two guys hated using Comcast, so they built their own fiber ISP
I love how these guys are trying to sort the lack of competition in broadband, stood up and did something about it and all the geeks on HN are upset that they are not doing something that the majority of their customers would not give shit about or even come close to understanding.

Everyone here that has started a company to challenge the entrenched monopoly raise your hands please.

I understand the tech deeply and that does not translate to the practical needs of trying to run a successful business.

I raise a toast to these guys. Well done.
