n0us··on I spent $220 on Google app ads and 60% of the installs were robots
Fair, I retract my cynical conjecture
n0us··on I spent $220 on Google app ads and 60% of the installs were robots
Taking a blind guess here because I have never worked at Google, but I would assume there is one organization that has the data, and another organization that can block IPs from clicking on the ads and consuming the spend. There is a byzantine process preventing that second org from getting the data along with a lack of motivation because it would decrease ad-spend, which is one of their key metrics. Org2 which deals with people clicking the ads is a bad place to work and no one who is actually good sticks around long enough to navigate the process and implement this, so the can gets perpetually kicked down the road.

Tends to be how it goes once you reach a certain size.

n0us··on Growing proof that autonomous cars save lives
Growing proof that PR for autonomous car companies has aligned on a strategy of painting you as a bad person if you want to drive your own car, and therefore you should pay them money to continue being a good person.
n0us··on Who Does What? Team Topologies for the Agentic Platform
The complexity was real, and honestly that’s a good callout
n0us··on Overconsumption is a spiritual problem
It really doesn't need to be that deep. Or pretentiously moralistic.

No, I don't think I will. Thanks for the suggestion though.

n0us··on Amazon Still Has a Counterfeit Problem
If you've ever read "Working Backwards" it's interesting to see how Amazon today is basically the polar opposite of everything they talk about in the book. I wonder what the author's opinion is.
n0us··on Stripe's Monorepo Developer Environment
You're limited by the resources available to you on your local laptop and when you close that laptop the dev environment stops running. Remote dev environments are more costly and complicated to maintain but they can be shared, can scale vertically (or horizontally) on demand, can persist when you exit them, and managing access to various internal services from dev environments can in some cases be simpler.

It also centralizes dev environment management to the platform team that owns them and provides them as a service which cuts down on support tickets related to broken dev environments. There are certainly some trade offs though and for most companies a local VM or docker compose file will be a better choice.

I think no because an android compatible watch would be compatible with any other android phone, not only Google Watch <--> Google Phone.
n0us··on How to Start Google
So why don’t they use those companies as examples instead?
n0us··on How to Start Google
In the YC Youtube videos it's amusing that they (Jason and the other guy) almost always reference Google and Facebook despite the fact that neither of those companies were YC companies and none of the YC companies out of 4000+ funded (not even Stripe) come close to the scale or valuation of either Google or Facebook.

n0us··on Thanks FedEx, this is why we keep getting phished
Is it impressive though? They have about a 50% success rate delivering things to me across multiple addresses and I know other people who have had similar long term issues.
n0us··on The FCC wants to criminalize AI robocall spam
They would just jack up prices to account for the additional costs and then they would never actually pay you that $10

n0us··on My frugal indie dev startup stack (2022)
Yeah but let's say your time is worth $60/hr. If you save only 40 minutes per month then you've broken even. Basically one lunch break. Some things are just a hassle to do, personally I would try to self host the Next app but I definitely see where the author is coming from purchasing Vercel.
n0us··on I'm Done with Red Hat (Enterprise Linux)
Isn't that basically all for-profit software though? not to mention exactly how most of the people on this board have paying jobs?

I would argue that it's exactly how the open source ethos works

n0us··on A cryptocurrency company had a $65M bill, per Datadog’s Q1 earnings call
Having recently dealt with a surprise runaway DataDog bill and personally completed lots of work to reduce our spend internally all I have to say is that their pricing is outrageously high and there is almost no way to put controls in place to prevent overspend.

If you're considering using them keep that in mind and tbh I would strongly recommend considering if CloudWatch or some other cheaper alternative is suitable for your needs.

n0us··on Angular v16
> Required inputs

> Since we introduced Angular in 2016 it has not been possible to get a compile-time error if you don’t specify a value for a specific input. The change adds zero overhead at runtime since the Angular compiler performs the check at build time. Developers kept asking for this feature over the years and we got a strong indication that this will be very handy!

> In v16 now you can mark an input as required

Amazing to finally see this land, awesome release

n0us··on Citi Bike Is Amazing. Citibank Should Pay for Every New Yorker's Membership
what-about-ism doesn't persuade me at all, just because cars are dangerous and obnoxious doesn't justify the poor behaviors and culture around bicycles in the city.

An "e-bike" that is going 25mph and running red lights without anyone doing any pedaling at all is a motorcycle end of story and they should be banned or require a license.

n0us··on Citi Bike Is Amazing. Citibank Should Pay for Every New Yorker's Membership
Here is my controversial opinion: The bikers are the worst people in NYC, they are constantly running through crosswalks while they don't have the light, going the wrong way down the street, riding on the sidewalks, etc. They never stop for anyone or for any reason and if they hit you they'll likely blame you also. You are far more likely to get hit by a bike than a car. I actually hate the bikes and bike lanes and would be overjoyed to see them banned or at least heavily ticketed for bad behavior. In my years of living here I have never once seen a bicycle stop at a stop light. ("Idaho stops" don't count, that's just stopping and then running the light)

Furthermore the electric "bicycles" are actually just electric motorcycles with auxiliary pedals and as such should require a license to drive.
