nanook··on Sonnet 5.5
Sonnet is 1/5th the price and seemingly more powerful than fable (the model that was too powerful to release). I can't make sense of this. Why would anyone use fable now? Or are the benchmarks completely pointless and one has to just try em to get a feel for what they can and can't do?
nanook··on GPT-6 Sol and Luna
Do you have a page showing all the pelicans you've ever created? Could be fun to browse - kinda like https://progress.openai.com/ but visual. (It's a shame they don't keep it updated)

I'm so tired of looking at benchmarks. I always look fwd to the pelicans.

nanook··on Apple Watch Series 12
It seems absolutely ridiculous to have to recharge a watch everyday and I've read sleep tracking on the apple watch is suboptimal.

I own a Withings Scanwatch 2 (and owned a nokia steel hr before that) and can confidently say it is just enough smart watch for me.

nanook··on Thank you Google for breaking my YouTube addiction
The thing that helped me tame YouTube was creating separate channels for my various interests. This keeps all my relevant subs in one place and really helps the algorithm. I turn off all the feeds on my main computer using https://socialfocus.app/. This prevents me from going down a YouTube hole when I don't want to but my searches and views still tune the respective algorithms. Occasionally, a stray recommendation will show up in the feed and I try to mark it "Not Interested".

Now its a real joy checking my channel feeds on the weekend and queueing things up to watch later. I have excellent stuff to chew through when I feel like it - in the gym, cooking, cleaning etc. I really look forward to doing these things now.

Switching profiles takes a few clicks but the upside has been totally worth it. It's a shame they don't make this workflow more obvious (You have to go to Account -> Switch accounts -> View all channels -> Create a channel) to set this up.

I wish more social media allowed you to bucket your feed into "interests". Maximizing clicks/views doesn't have to come at the cost of scattered attention.

nanook··on Guide to mechanical keyboards
> niche of Mac keyboard users

Is it a niche though? Logitech, cheap BT keyboards etc mostly stick to this layout. And it's not just the left side that is the issue - they move fn to the right in place of the alt key. Can't cmd-alt-i with 1 hand anymore!

The only other keyboards I've seen with this mac-like layout are -

- https://nuphy.com/collections/keyboards/products/nutype-f1?v... which looks slick but I much prefer the 75% layout

- https://electronicmaterialsoffice.com/ which I can't justify paying for right now

> an external version of the MacBook keyboard with hotswap switches, RGB, and caps

Wow, this is almost exactly what I've been looking for! Thanks for the rec! It's a shame they don't ship to where I am right now. I'll try to pick one up next time I travel.

nanook··on Guide to mechanical keyboards
Why do they never make these with 4 modifier keys on the left side like Mac keyboards(Ctrl, Fn, Alt, Cmd)? Hate not being able to use muscle memory switching between my MBP and an external keyboard.

nanook··on The 13-Inch MacBook Air
I wish apple would put a damn 5G chip on their laptops!

It makes no sense that you can get a 12.9" iPad Pro Wi-Fi + Cellular but not a 13" MBA Wi-Fi + Cellular. Sure, battery life might take a bit of a hit but I like that compromise more than needing to fret about my phone's battery levels because of the extra drain from tethering.

nanook··on MacBook Pro 14-inch and MacBook Pro 16-inch
I think these still stick to 16:10.

If you take 74px off the height for the notch/menubar area, you get 3024 x 1890 and 3456 x 2160 which are both 16:10.

nanook··on Ask HN: Is it normal to fall out of love with coding?
This whole article is great, but the first 2 paragraphs really resonated with me: http://www.loper-os.org/#selection-29.0-44.0

Here's an excerpt:

Sadly, the above scenario is more truth than fiction – for computer enthusiasts. There is a particularly cruel discrepancy between what a creative child imagines the trade of a programmer to be like and what it actually is. When you are a teenager, alone with a (programmable) computer, the universe is alive with infinite possibilities. You are a god. Master of all you survey. Then you go to school, major in “Computer Science,” graduate – and off to the salt mines with you, where you will stitch silk purses out of sow’s ears in some braindead language, building on the braindead systems created by your predecessors, for the rest of your working life. There will be little room for serious, deep creativity. You will be constrained by the will of your master (whether the proverbial “pointy-haired boss,” or lemming-hordes of fickle startup customers) and by the limitations of the many poorly-designed systems you will use once you no longer have an unconstrained choice of task and medium. To my knowledge, no child grows up “playing doctor” and still believes as a teenager (or even as a college student) that an actual medical practice resembles that activity. Likewise, no one has a fully functional toy legal system to play with as a child, and as a result goes into law. On the other hand, “adult” programming, seen from afar, is enough like child-programming to set the computer-enthusiast child up for just this kind of exceptionally cruel bait-and-switch.

This is a great post and I agree with everything you say and I am glad you guys are doing this.

I just wish you had more information about your company online (Angellist/Crunchbase etc). I think few people would be willing to put in 3-4 hours on a coding challenge unless they had a good idea about your funding, size etc.

I might have got a coding challenge from you a few weeks back but skipped it because I didn't have enough information. Ah well.. might do it this weekend.

Hope this helps!

nanook··on Hacker School User's Manual
I'm getting an F1 visa for grad school and the earliest I can enter the US is August. I'll have to get a visitor visa, go to hackerschool, fly back, get my F1 and re-enter the US. That's just too much of a hassle.

I guess I'll just try next time.. and I hope Norvig stays for a few more batches.

nanook··on Introduction to Guitar
If you're not an absolute beginner, you should check out all the REH/HotLicks videos. Some really amazing lessons there - Petrucci's Rock Discipline, Paul Gilbert's Intense Rock/Terrifying Guitar Trip etc.. lots of advanced jazz stuff too. (Scott Henderson, Joe Pass, John Scofield's videos come to mind)

I doubt they're still available to buy online though. You should be able to find them on youtube or torrent them.

If you're looking for a good book, check out Guthrie Govan's Creative Guitar series[1]. They're wonderful!

nanook··on Introduction to Guitar
That's like buying a Porsche to learn how to drive. Sure, you can drive it around, look cool and feel good but you won't know what to do when you break something.

Also, you're going to sound like shit if you're forced to play a cheap, badly setup guitar. (oh-this-guitar-sucks-so-i-cant-play is a terrible excuse, trust me.)

Another reason why I think this is a bad idea - you have no idea what kind of guitar you want when you're starting out. You dont know what wood you want, if you want humbuckers or single coils, floating or fixed bridge. You don't want to buy a 5000$ custom shop Les Paul and realize you're not comfortable playing it.
