nathankot··on Ryuichi Sakamoto has died
It's very interesting to compare with a more recent performance (2020): https://youtu.be/X6td9KUZMfw?t=5259
nathankot··on Toolformer: Language Models Can Teach Themselves to Use Tools
I released a proof of concept yesterday which is basically a very rudimentary version of your second sentence: https://github.com/nathankot/bashi
nathankot··on Show HN: Bashi – open-source and extensible AI assistant platform and app
Hi HN, sorry for yet another AI related post =D like many of you I've been playing around with GPT recently. I set out to see if I could get a model to interpret requests and take action in an extensible manner.

At some point along this journey I discovered LangChain, which has lots of similarities. But I think one potentially novel thing for this crowd is that Bashi works by asking the model to interact with effectively a REPL, where function calls can have real side effects. On the other side there is an interpreter for a subset of javascript.

It also comes with an OSX app, so if you're on mac you can test out and hack on the proof of concept right away :)

Hope that this can spawn some interesting use cases and prove useful for some of you!

nathankot··on In the Future, We’ll All Wear Spider Silk
One of my friends works at a Japanese company called spiber, I think they made a jacket out of spider silk:

nathankot··on Show HN: Rumuki, a prenup for sex tapes
Thanks guys, this reply thread has some really good feedback. The tagline actually used to be 'a condom for your sex tapes' (hence the big camera illustration,) but it got swapped out over time as it seemed a bit of a 'strong' word.

Going to deeply consider the angle moving forward :)

nathankot··on Show HN: Rumuki, a prenup for sex tapes
You are correct!

Hey no problem:

1. Uses Realm for storage, encrypted with their encryption api using a random key generated on first boot stored in iOS keychain.

2 & 3. It has some rudimentary jailbreak detection but obfuscation is still in the pipeline.

(Getting late here in Tokyo so may be until tomorrow before I answer follow up questions)

Thank you!!!

Yup, you can set an in-app passcode that locks the UI (you're asked to set one different from the phones passcode)
nathankot··on Show HN: Rumuki, a prenup for sex tapes
Thanks! It's already on the App Store (since today,) I've been working on this for about 2 years now.

OP here, this is addressed in the FAQ, I'll paste it here :)

> How do I know my partner won't abuse my trust?

> You can't. However with Rumuki you have the discretion to only grant playbacks when you can keep an eye on them. You also have the option to revoke all playback grants and delete the recording if trust is ever lost.

nathankot··on Ask HN: Have you ever thought of leaving programming for something else?
Just like how some photographers focus solely on wedding shoots, or some treat photography as art. Or how some architects specialize in copy-and-paste homes, whilst others spend time engaging with and designing something specific to the client - I think there's a huge spectrum in terms of 'creativity' for all specializations that 'make' things, and it's hard to say that one is more creative than the other.

Perhaps whether or not you're exposed to creativity depends on where you, or the industry places you in the field.. perhaps the more experienced you are in an industry, the more opportunities you have for creativity?

nathankot··on Rust and Rest: Lessons Learned from Talking to Sentry's HTTP API from Rust
Also had a go at making an API library using Rust for Plaid (disclaimer: work for Plaid) ran into some of the same questions, but ultimately made different choices (used rustc_serialize over serde, hyper over rust-curl,) here are the docs for anyone interested: http://nathankot.com/plaid-rust/master/plaid/index.html

nathankot··on Show HN: Autocompletion for Swift on Emacs
Yup! This is exactly what powers company-sourcekit so huge props to jpsim for making this possible
nathankot··on Show HN: Mjolnir, an automation/productivity app for OS X
Just wrote a basic tiling window manager config based on amethyst: https://github.com/nathankot/dotfiles/blob/master/dotfiles/....

Half-baked, but it's smoother than amethyst for me :)

nathankot··on Show HN: DailyDigest.io – daily summaries of subreddits sent via email
I've been using a homemade one for the last half year and just released it after seeing this :) http://blanket.io

Notable difference is that it accepts any rss feed, and also tries to summarize articles.

nathankot··on Ask HN: What projects are you working on?
My significant other and I are working on a new kind of wedding registry (a wish list for wedding gifts) in our spare time: https://wed.is

It solves two big problems for us when we were looking at existing options:

- They tend to look reallly old school or lack customization

- If we chose a registry we were stuck with the products it had to offer
