ndr42··on How Amazon pushes up prices all across the Internet
What happened after that? How was it resolved?
ndr42··on Apple: Switch to Safari (From Chrome)
I'm not sure that developers are the target audience the article is trying to reach.
ndr42··on Apple: Switch to Safari (From Chrome)
Do I get it right: Chrome and Safari and many others are all "excellent"?
ndr42··on Apple: Switch to Safari (From Chrome)
Do you mind to address some of the points of the article that claims that Chrome is worse?
ndr42··on Solar panels that plug into your wall
In Germany there is no VAT for solar installations - I'm not aware of any other "subsidies".

We (northern part of Germany) installed 7 KW panels with 10 KW battery for €15K in 2024. My neighbor is installing 10 KW panels with 10 KW battery for €18K this week. So it seems the total costs have not dropped any further in the last 2 years.

ndr42··on Former German spy chief arrested for attempted treason
No, the thing he was arrested for is having classified documents in his possession.
ndr42··on Italian parliament votes for return to nuclear energy
But many nuclear power plants in europe are running on russian uranium - so I don't get the argument that you are "hostage" to foreign oil just to become "hostage" of foreign uranium.

Something like wind and solar combined with batteries would be a more sovereign form of energy generation that is (as a bonus) more decentral and less prone to attacks.

ndr42··on Show HN: I made a flight simulator, except you're just a passenger
Sitting all alone in the plane I'm reminded of the movie Knight and Day (Tom Cruise, Cameron Diaz) where they are nearly the only passengers (with some adversaries).
ndr42··on Apple's Dimensional Drawings
About a year ago I was designing a 3d-printed case for my iPad and found nothing online. I tried to locate the magnets with a magnetic flux detector but the results were very inaccurate. Great that this info is now available.
ndr42··on iPhone Duo
I remember the presentation of the first iPhone and the extreme contrast of Steve Jobs to the representative of the cellular provider. Scroll to 1:11 and see for yourself:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VQKMoT-6XSg

Yes they had some good other presenters at the keynotes but Steve Jobs was extraordinary.

ndr42··on iPhone Duo
It's interesting that unit sales as a metric was there from the beginning of this kind of discussions (which company is more successful) - and is still in use.

It had not hurt Apple to not have the most unit sold in the past while taking most of the money.

I imagine that the $2000 Samsung Phone has a healthy margin and makes money insofar it's not great for them that apple enters this segment of the market.

But of course you are right: Samsung is of course not dead in the water. But it's obvious that it already lost in regard to mindshare (exemplified by the number of comments here).

ndr42··on The Lost Treasure of Sid Meier's Pirates
It is one of the games that are timeless as they work for different generations. I played on an Atari ST aged 13 and my sons played the iPad version at about the same age.
ndr42··on RCade: The Arcade Cabinet with CI/CD Deployment, Custom Graphics Card for CRT [video]
Thank you! It works. What I don't get: Why they don't provide a way for a normal user to switch the audio.
ndr42··on RCade: The Arcade Cabinet with CI/CD Deployment, Custom Graphics Card for CRT [video]
I had to endure the ai-translated speech in german - it's unbearable. Usually I download the video and enjoy it in its intend form but my yt-downloader (Downie) does not work anymore atm.

Any Ideas how to get the original sound?

ndr42··on LearnVector – Andrew Ng's AI company building one‑to‑one learning experiences
A very cynical way to put it: "Why should I learn something when AI could do for me?"
ndr42··on Relax with Coax
"I put every Star Trek series into a Collection on my Plex, pointed Coax at it and now I have a channel that's playing a random Star Trek episode at any given moment. It's fantastic." (https://mastodon.social/@Moltz/116896945313382677)
ndr42··on AI Poisons Creativity [video]
It's ironic that I had to download the video to get the original version in english language. Youtube thinks that I would like the awful ai-translated german version. And there's no other way to disable this behavior.
ndr42··on Taxonomy of the Occlupanida (parasitoids on bread bag tags)
Well, if the ecological niches are the same there could be analogous developments that are not homologies. So I without a reconstruction of the environment I'm not certain that the proposed tree is valid.
ndr42··on The problem with the P/E ratio
The article is about the valuation of companies invested in AI - but have a look at the valuation of Tesla in the graphs.
ndr42··on You Need a PC for PC Games: Sunsoft's Shanghai
Oh my. I was about 11-12 years old in 1987, my father promised me a game for the Atari ST, we were in a computer store and the Dragon looked so cool on the cover so I chose the game without knowing what it was.

My parents played Shanghai for more than 10 years daily. Me not so much.

Edit: I repeated this kind of mistake a bit later by choosing "Knight Orc", a text adventure game with static pictures but with a cool cover. In english. Not the best choice when you start learning english in school when you're 10.

ndr42··on Paper Airplane Designs
I really like the idea to print lines on the paper so that you can see more easily where every fold comes from. But why are they used only in the overview/thumbnails and not in the step by step folding directions.

(leaving hn to print lines with different colors on every side on sheets of paper)

ndr42··on Cybertruck owner believed Elon Musk that it could cross lake – now he's in jail
Here is a 2 year old video of a BYD electric vehicle floating for real: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7fFKDV2p2C0
ndr42··on Cybertruck owner believed Elon Musk that it could cross lake – now he's in jail
OK, but getting charged with "having no valid boat registration" sounds as stupid as driving into a lake.

ndr42··on Plex's 200% Lifetime Pass price hike tries forcing users to another subscription
I'm relatively new to Jellyfin but for iOS and tvOS Swiftfin is a joy to use.

Edit: It's native and open source: https://github.com/jellyfin/swiftfin

ndr42··on Show HN: I made a 3D pose maker for artists
It was Windows first for some time, now it's Windows only.
ndr42··on Apple's First Retail Stores Opened 25 Years Ago Today
I remember thinking then: That can't work.
