neil1··on Show HN: Cloud GPUs for Deep Learning – At 1/3 the Cost of AWS/GCP
This is a pretty cool project
neil1··on Bill Gurley Is Leaving Uber’s Board
I wonder if Travis resigning was contingent on Bill Gurley leaving the board. As Bill seems to be the main anti-Travis actor on the board.
neil1··on Show HN: Monica, an open-source CRM to manage friends and family
It would be great if you could add city as a form field and allow searching by city. I'd love to pay for this/contribute as well. I was just about to build something similar (but less pretty)
neil1··on We Don’t Do Legacy (2012)
This has been sort of done with Charter schools that use a lottery based acceptance system.

The problem with even random systems is that parents that are willing to fill out the many forms required are usually more involved in their children's life then the median in poor communities.

Also - many charter schools don't provide federally funded free lunches which means that the poorest students who rely on these lunches are unable to attend these schools.

neil1··on Olympic executives cash in on a ‘Movement’ that keeps athletes poor
Yes, it does: "That same 2012 study by former athletes found that just 6 percent of USOC spending actually goes to athletes as cash payments."
neil1··on An industry that helps Chinese cheat their way into and through US colleges
Reed is a wonderful example of a school with almost no grade inflation. In the last 30 years only 11 students have had perfect GPAs.

neil1··on Snapchat reportedly buys Bitstrips for roughly $100M
That's not actually entirely true. Snapchat is known for having only preferences for seed/A round investors.
neil1··on The $10,000-a-year college education has arrived (1981)
You're forgetting about opportunity cost and the salary plus job advancement that you could achieve in the time you are in college
neil1··on In Europe, Fake Jobs Can Have Real Benefits
It seems like it would be a much more productive use of human capital to actually do the work below cost so something is actually being accomplished.
neil1··on OnboardIQ Raises $1.65M to Streamline the Hiring Process
Great team, huge problem, and a great solution. Congrats
neil1··on HackerSurfing: Free Housing and Food for Engineers Visiting SF
How do you code in tub, is there a special case that you use or how do you prevent water from hitting your computer?
neil1··on Talk – Smart, Private Messaging
The app's restaurants messaging comes from a startup path acquired, talkto.
neil1··on Who Gets to Graduate?
It's strange that this article just hit the front page of HN, when it was written 20 days ago.
neil1··on Hachette/Amazon Business Interruption
I wouldn't call it "classy", it's a public relations ploy, meant to turn public opinion in Amazon's favor.
neil1··on Keepod: Can a $7 stick provide billions computer access?
I still can't wrap my head around, why they used Android 4.4 instead of just using linux, this does not seem like a new paradigm, just a minor "innovation".
neil1··on Driver caught using cell phone jamming device
It's a solution to a problem, that he faces. I understand that it makes no sense, but sometimes you have to do things that make no sense or switch carriers.
neil1··on Driver caught using cell phone jamming device
You can buy and install a cellphone extender for your house.
neil1··on Show HN: Betatype - A freelance site where clients pay $3,500 for prototypes
why does it say > NDA included! NDA's are terrible. They stifle creative thought, put yourself up for lawsuits and someone, has had the "genius" idea before.
neil1··on Freelancer.com is destroying my life
One mistake, I noticed was

> They pretend to resolve the issue in private, hoping to shut you up in public, only to continue the run around in private, offering absolutely no solution

I think you meant public instead of private.

neil1··on A survey of 911 dispatchers reveals the cost of bad technology
Exactly, but I think one of the problems is that since government is filled with bureaucrats, who don't understand how easy it is to implement this, they instead listen to the phone company lobbyists, who says "this will be incredibly expensive and hard to enable"
neil1··on A survey of 911 dispatchers reveals the cost of bad technology
Obviously, the problem is not the technology, it's an antiquated government. A government that is run by bureaucrats, that don't know how to properly leverage technology, especially satellite technology.
neil1··on The Truth About Google X: A Look Behind The Secretive Lab's Closed Doors
It seems as though a big part of google x is waiting for academies to do a lot of the hard lifting and then when something has all of the part's completed and researched, putting them all together.
neil1··on Teen to government: Change your typeface, save millions
That is the highest price for ink and not the price that government's or companies who buy in bulk pay.
neil1··on Winklevoss twin says Bitcoin valuation will top $40k
How is that news? It's in their self interest(being large bitcoin investors) to try to raise expectations and make the price go up.
