nend··on Show HN: Not sure you're talking to a human? Create a human check
I pay for a vpn service and whenever I'm on it google makes me go through a ton of captchas before I can search. The first time it happened I assumed I must've kept getting one wrong, it made me go through 10 or so. The next time I just quit after 5 and started using bing.

I suppose it's been the policy of a lot of big tech companies for a while, but it's just cheaper for them to lose x percent of users than it is to allow y percent of bots.

nend··on Orcas that hunted alongside humans might be extinct
>But it’s simply not correct to claim that we’re stuck in the tradeoff our ancestors made when they settled down to farm.

I mean we are because if we go back to hunting/gathering billions of people would die.

The point is that that at the time, farming produced worse nutrition, but despite that we couldn't go back once we started. There's a whole lot of other variables today that obviously prevent us from going back to hunting/gathering.

nend··on Orcas that hunted alongside humans might be extinct
I can't remember the name of the book I read this from so grain of salt/do your own research, but it was on the topic of why farming replaced hunting/gathering/migratory patterns.

One of the reasons mentioned was because despite hunting/gathering generally providing better nutrition (due to the variability in food), farming produced more calories. So the decision became (these number are made up) "we can farm and provide high quantities of poor nutrition to keep all of us alive", vs "we can hunt/gather to keep 75% of in great health, while 25% of the group dies."

Basically once a certain population threshold is reached the group has to enter a cycle of farming -> allows more babies to survive -> farm more. Your comment and this anecdote reminds of the capitalism cycle of consume more -> produce more value -> consume more.

If true, we've been unable to escape this cycle for thousands of years.

nend··on California moves to silence Stanford researchers who got data to study education
If you're curious, read up on FERPA.
nend··on Half of vinyl buyers in the U.S. don’t have a record player: study
>It's like meditation

What you're describing is mindfulness meditation.

nend··on U.S. Inflation Eased to 5% in March
Sounds reasonable to me. There are 2 outliers, and the rest are right around average.
nend··on Thinking hard makes the brain tired
>I get to a point where someone might tell me to remember 3 things at the grocery store and I’ll remember only one.

Too real. If someone gives me two or more items to get I tell them I'm not going without a list. If it's the end of a day, whatever I'm trying to remember just gets pushed out after fifteen minutes.

nend··on The developer job market is insane
At the moment the number of open jobs is not huge. The majority of companies that haven't had lay offs have simply closed their open positions. Combined with a ton of layed off developers, most job postings get hundred of applicants within a few hours.
nend··on Yellen says government will help SVB depositors but rules out bailout
Yes, the ceiling of the guarantee. If the bank has additional assets to be sold you can still receive more of your deposit back, but the government doesn't guarantee it.
nend··on The haunting brain science of long Covid
Not sure about elsewhere but it's widely available in the us at pretty much any pharmacy.
nend··on Ask HN: I just want to have fun programming again
C# also allows you to use blazor, eliminating the need for js/multiple languages to write a web app.

I personally find that a much more fun way to program.

nend··on Tell HN: Firefox Is an awesome browser right now
This sounds like it might be the same issue tbh, although I'm on windows. I'll give it a shot if I feel like switching back, thanks.
nend··on Tell HN: Firefox Is an awesome browser right now
It wasn't a rendering issue, it was a network connectivity issue. I probably sound like I don't know what I'm talking about, but it is what it is. Switched to chrome and the network issue resolved immediately.
nend··on Tell HN: Firefox Is an awesome browser right now
No, but at the same time I don't really want to diagnose my browser. I just want something that works.
nend··on Tell HN: Firefox Is an awesome browser right now
Yeah good point, could be that. Just keeper and ublock, on windows
nend··on Tell HN: Firefox Is an awesome browser right now
I just switched back to chrome for the same reason. Every page in Firefox was taking 60+second to load. Tried it on chrome and pages were loading instantly.

I had originally switched to Firefox for privacy concerns but that and the memory usage/occasional crashing were too much for me.

edit: not sure what the downvotes are for. I'm glad there's a second option out there. It didn't work for me but figured it was worth sharing my anecdote along with OPS. I just wish there was a third option, or more.

nend··on How we plan to de-extinct the Dodo bird
It went extinct due to human hunting and invasive species (rats, brought by humans) eating their eggs. While not exactly a solved problem, both of these things have been addressed for other species to help ensure they don't go extinct.
nend··on Microsoft workers to form company’s first union in the U.S.
That sounds a lot more successful than most other industries. I don't think software engineers, or retail employees are getting half of the business' revenue. That sounds like a pro union example.
nend··on Nuclear physicist explains why fusion ignition is hailed as a major breakthrough
Breakthrough:

1. a sudden advance especially in knowledge or technique

2. an act or instance of moving through or beyond an obstacle

Milestone:

1. an action or event marking a significant change or stage in development.

I'm failing to see why labeling it one or the other even matters.

nend··on Ask HN: How to deal with burn out whilst in probationary period?
It doesn't sound like OPs current burn out is specific to this one job. Most people don't wake up on day 1 of burnout and say "oh man I'm burned out now." In my experience burnout creeps up over years and you only realize it when you can no longer cope.

If they leave this job for a new one they'll still be burned out, just like the last two times in the past year they left their job for a new one.

My advice is the same as other commenters, OP should seek professional help with therapy. There are other things that can help like meditation, but in my experience there's no quick fix.

nend··on Don’t let the great ESG self-deception infect climate tech investing
The problem is companies prioritize profits over humanities basic needs like a functioning planet and climate.

Regulation should really be the solution imo. The cost of ruining the climate should be higher so companies are forced to change their practices. But if the government is incapable or unwilling to regulate it and you still invest in them in order to make money, then what you're really saying is

"I'm going to invest in this company for profit related reasons even if the company is willing to destroy the planet in order to make more profit"

Which deserves a negative response imo.

nend··on Science, technology and innovation isn’t addressing world’s most urgent problems
Your quoted text explains it very simply too. These are social/political problems, they need social/political solutions.
nend··on Why are sex workers forced to wear a financial scarlet letter?
Something can be both "simply a job" and different than most jobs. The argument is that sex work isn't inherently immoral, so deserves to be supported by our financial infrastructure. It's "simply a job" in the sense that it deserves legitimacy, not that it's exactly like most other jobs.

Institutional support instead of prosecution also comes with the benefit of at least partially undermining the black market of the work, and the additional crimes that are frequently associated with sex work.

nend··on Why adults still dream about school
I mean this in a polite way, but if college is the highest stakes one has experienced, then that's a pretty narrow experience of anxiety and difficulties life has to offer.

To me that seems like a very fortunate life experience.

nend··on AlphaFold developers win $3M breakthrough prize
The great wall of china was partially funded by lotteries. I don't think anyone from the future is going to have anything to say about today's lotteries. Lotteries will probably still be popular in a hundred years.
nend··on Reddit's favorite products in one place
You misunderstood, OP isn't complaining that there are amazon affiliate links or that this site is trying to make money.

They're pointing out that only products that are sold on amazon, are being aggregated. So the web app isn't fulfilling the claim of "listing Reddit's favorite products", but instead they are listing "Reddit's favorite products that are sold on amazon".

Which causes such issues that another commenter pointed out, there are no ThinkPad laptop models listed as a favorite product for /r/laptops.

nend··on Ask HN: Should I checkmate my employer?
OP is trying to get out but hasn't been able to. Adopting a "fuck you, pay me" attitude when you have no ability to leave is not a smart move.

Absolutely they should be somewhere they're more valued, but should be patient while they work out how to do that.

nend··on Classic HN Links
I'm guessing it's because it was posted 4 times but only met the 30 upvote threshold twice.
nend··on Remote startups will win the war for top talent
I wouldn't assume the in office workers get more done because they go to the office, correlation != causation.

It seems just as likely to me that the most dedicated, hard working employees are the ones willing to commute in to the office in the first place, and they would get more work done than others regardless of where they work.

nend··on Ask HN: Where do you find the interesting jobs?
Depends on your definition of normal. I've interviewed with 10 companies or so over the last 6 months, ranging from FAANG to series B startups, all US based.

One company asked me to sign an NDA, they're a well known public but non-FAANG Boston based company. I didn't have a problem signing it but I also don't really see the point.
