netzone··on PHP 8.1.0
That's way too complicated for the person just starting out and wanting to add a counter to his small website. Nobody starting out with programming today will start with Rails. They might start with Javascript, but more than likely they'll start with PHP. It's accessible and SIMPLE.
netzone··on How does your programming language handle “minus zero” (-0.0)?
I believe that's actually a standard presentation, I've seen it in several weather graphs. It's basically a rounding yeah, signifying it's just slightly below zero, but not enough to round to -1°.
netzone··on You only need 2,450M True Fans to be successful
You're incorrect there. It depends on what context. M as in thousand are roman numerals, whereas M in greek would be million.

It's not counterintuitive at all, obviously the context here means that it's million, as you wouldn't note thousands as 2,450M in any way, it'd just be 2450. So the only remaining option is that it means million.

It's not even remotely confusing, I'm sorry.

netzone··on Beaker Browser – experimental peer to peer web browser
I was under the assumption that Spotify stopped doing that because P2P was getting blocked by networks? Maybe I'm wrong.
netzone··on 70TB of Parler users’ messages, videos, and posts leaked by security researchers
I believe he was just noting the irony of someone claiming something, then openly not doing so, rather than any rules being broken.
netzone··on My stack is HTML+CSS
I'd say probably Turbolinks is your best bet there. You basically drop it in, and then it prefetches all the links on your page, and when you click them, it replaces the DOM. It works quite well actually, Rails has been using it out of the box for years and years.
netzone··on Facebook is ordered to delete any Facial Recognition Templates within 90 days
So is this going to be a thing where only US users are affected, or is it global?
netzone··on Angular v8.0
I mean you get best practices for the small part React is focused on. Angular is a full type of ecosystem, like your Ruby on Railses, Djangoes etc. in which you can install it and then create a full website directly without any dependencies other than what you get.
netzone··on The Boring Company will develop an underground “people mover” for Las Vegas
I guess mobile PowerPacks with solar panels? Just deploy a few thousand outside the tunneling area and then automate the battery switching. Could run it 24/7 without anyone ever going to Mars even.
netzone··on Why I’m Using a Flip Phone
Or you work at a company with no significant secrets that could potentially be shared through chatting. Priorities; why spend time and effort on some on-site solution when there's really nothing to gain security wise unless you have secrets? You won't be sharing passwords through Slack or Discord in any case, that's for a password manager, so you're really left with trade secrets, and why would there be trade secrets in a Slack channel for a web development company?
netzone··on Ask HN: Solo app devs, how do you do user testing?
I don't understand this, why would you want people to test something that's already predefined? You could automate that. You want real users that will use the app for real things. Blind testing from a list seems kind of pointless.
netzone··on Show HN: Find your competitor's Websites
And the places where this happens a lot (ads for example) is completely useless for this.
netzone··on China Plans $47B Fund to Boost Its Semiconductor Industry
Probably the safest field to get into would be everyday things, especially plumbing. There's no automating that, pipes will always break and new (and old) buildings will always need to manage complex plumbing systems.
netzone··on Stephen Hawking's Final Paper Cuts the Multiverse Down to Size
What if we only get precisely the amount of energy we require? Each universe won't need infinite energy.
netzone··on NASA completes full-power tests of small, portable nuclear reactor
What would the effects be of releasing nuclear waste in space? Could we sent up all of our nuclear waste, put a rocket on it and just let it disappear into the distance?
netzone··on How to build a house alone [video]
Well, you could probably find it. You definitely had more of the really large trees in North America as far as I know, historically anyway.

Today, building something with massive sturdy timber would likely not be much cheaper (if at all) than just building a concrete box.

netzone··on Ask HN: What's actually in Coca Cola?
I've frequently noted that it takes longer for me to drink a Pepsi, if I even finish it at all. The initial taste, especially while eating, is more pleasant with Pepsi than it is with Coke, but the amount of Coke I can drink comfortably is higher than with Pepsi.
netzone··on New in Chrome 66
jQuery becomes less needed by the second, unless you want compatibility with other and older browsers, which is almost a given. :)
netzone··on To Make Cordial Pepper Water
It's still black liquorice of course, but yes, it's salted with ammonium chloride.
netzone··on Why Do Fantasy Novels Have So Much Food?
I think you'll just find enjoyment in other non-descriptive genres, that I would likely not enjoy. Personally I can practically see the things I read, and it's colored my reading so much that I almost get bored reading stuff that's not as descriptive. I also theorise that this is the reason I usually dislike movie adaptions - it doesn't fit with the "movie" my brain created.
netzone··on Russia Bans 1.8M Amazon and Google IPs in Attempt to Block Telegram
Wasn't it WhatsApp that sent a key back to Facebook servers? Technically it's end-to-end encrypted, but Facebook could decrypt it if they really wanted to.
netzone··on To Make Cordial Pepper Water
Probably more like to people not from northern Europe. In Sweden and licorice is very popular here, as well as in Finland to my knowledge.
netzone··on Building a Text Editor for a Digital-First Newsroom
So, we had this product (or the larger one anyway) demoed for my work and our takeaway was that only really large organisations could possibly use it. It needs to many human hands between writing an article and getting it published. We want to move to something more automated, and this system would have been a serious setback.
netzone··on Reddit's redesign could kill discussion subreddits
I think that's now removed no? Or at least, I haven't noticed it for a while. I got hit with the Google hammer regarding a similar banner, where they threatened to stop indexing the site completely, so I assume they had a similar message. Or maybe they're large enough to be exempt. I don't know.
netzone··on Steve Wozniak on why he is leaving Facebook [video]
I thought this was commonly known?
netzone··on YouTube and Facebook Are Losing Creators to Blockchain-Powered Rivals
Well.. That's the point isn't it? I've never heard about it, and likely only people interested in blockchain stuff has, I would guess.

On that note, are there any mainstream blockchain based sites or apps right now? Would be interesting to know.

netzone··on Suspect in YouTube Shooting Angry That Her Videos Had Been 'De-Monetized'
That's not exactly right. First you would need to know how to use an ad system, probably DFP and maybe DFP Premium if you're expecting a high audience, and probably an organisation to book and handle all those ads to maximise your income. Your website also needs the infrastructure to be able to deliver your content to your audience. That can be hard for a non-technical person, hard and expensive.

So, you have a website with your videos, you have proper advertising on your videos, maybe a subscription system setup. What next? Where do you get your audience?

Today the universal truth is that you get your audience on Youtube, and to some extent Vimeo. You just lost practically 100% of potential customers.

ARPG is not the same as a realtime RPG...
netzone··on Xray – An experimental next-generation Electron-based text editor
What's stopping you from using the software you've listed on a more modern laptop? I mean, I don't really understand the point of "cooperating with the system". You found a setup that works nicely for you, with a newer laptop everything would be faster, you could run Quake 3 without lag.
netzone··on Why Developers Never Use State Machines (2011)
Something that shows me how this is worth spending the time learning, when I could just as easily use another high-level language with clean syntax and a compiler that produces relatively fast binaries - but that are not functional - minus the learning curve.
