nimbleplum40··on FDA approves first medication to reduce allergic reactions to multiple foods
Far from a silver bullet, but still exciting as the first medicine of its kind! Accidental exposure happens to pretty much everyone with food allergies, so reducing the risk of anaphylaxis by ~70% is huge and will save lives.
nimbleplum40··on FDA approves first medication to reduce allergic reactions to multiple foods
This is taking regularly to reduce the risk of even having an anaphylactic reaction if exposed to an allergen.

When you say “transfer money to discretionary” for example, is that a category in your budget or a separate account?

I’ve never had YNAB double up a transfer.

Also, capital gains - not sure what the issue is there either. Add a transaction and categorize it to “Ready To Assign”. Works great.

nimbleplum40··on GnuCash Tutorial and Concepts Guide
Have you found value out of this? I just consider cash spent as soon as I withdraw it, as far as the budget goes. Tracking small change sounds tedious and seems line it wouldn’t provide value, but so I’m curious to hear if you think differently.
nimbleplum40··on GnuCash Tutorial and Concepts Guide
What about it is useless?

I’ve found it to be incredibly useful. And prior to that I used ledger for a few years. Ledger was great, but personally I find YNAB to be more useful because the budgeting features are the focus, not the accounting.

That would be awful… why have everyone get off of trains outside the city then get on different trains for the final crossing into the city?

> All they build are really the buildings that are meant to store value for foreign investors, typical open plan offices or warehouses.

Offices and warehouses is not what I expected to follow the first part of that sentence… office and warehouses are pretty productive! And likely a better use of space in a dense urban environment than a manufacturing facility.

nimbleplum40··on You're a cyclist who was just struck by a car driver. Why it was your fault
I was responding to the original comment.

But they’re both forms of urban transportation that share the same infrastructure.

nimbleplum40··on You're a cyclist who was just struck by a car driver. Why it was your fault
I'm not denying what you've seen, but it just doesn't match what I've seen at all.

> Several cities have opted to remove their protected bike lanes for exactly the same reasons.

Sure, but many cities are rapidly _expanding_ their network of protected bike lanes because of how widely they're used.

I don't have data to back this up, but I suspect that many more miles of protected bike lanes are being added each year than removed. For example, NYC [1]. For another, here's a compilation of many cities. [2]

What cities are removing bike infrastructure?

nimbleplum40··on You're a cyclist who was just struck by a car driver. Why it was your fault
Cyclists had a fully-protect lane free of cars and decided to ride in the middle of a lane filled with idling cars? I'm not sure where you live, but that's just not the behavior I've seen anywhere else...
nimbleplum40··on You're a cyclist who was just struck by a car driver. Why it was your fault
Do these bike roads go to my office? To the store? To restaurants?
nimbleplum40··on You're a cyclist who was just struck by a car driver. Why it was your fault
Taking the lane is really the only way to bike safely in traffic though unless there is a ton of space for cars to safely pass.
nimbleplum40··on You're a cyclist who was just struck by a car driver. Why it was your fault
When you say “cyclist friendly” do you mean “fully physically protected bike lanes”? Lots of cities paint on bike lanes (often in the door zone of parked cars…) then people are confused when cyclists often don’t use them. But if they aren’t safe or are always obstructed by parked cars, it’s really not that helpful…
nimbleplum40··on You're a cyclist who was just struck by a car driver. Why it was your fault
Depends on your purpose. Bikes are great in cities, are better for the environment, are much quieter (better for others outside), are safer for pedestrian, and are great exercise.

But anywhere you could be safely traveling 50mph+ is probably not the type of road I’m advocating building bike lanes on…

nimbleplum40··on You're a cyclist who was just struck by a car driver. Why it was your fault
The Idaho stop (what I think you’re referring to) is actually _safer_ for cyclists [1].

And the interstate highway system cost $550B (in todays dollars) to construct. Useful things are often expensive…
nimbleplum40··on You're a cyclist who was just struck by a car driver. Why it was your fault
Agreed! But bike infrastructure is still important. Transit plus bikes are a great combo.
nimbleplum40··on You're a cyclist who was just struck by a car driver. Why it was your fault
I don’t follow. A space program isn’t really relevant to transportation…
nimbleplum40··on You're a cyclist who was just struck by a car driver. Why it was your fault
Replacing all cars with self driving cars is a lot more expensive than just adding proper bike infrastructure.
nimbleplum40··on US inflation means families are spending $709 more per month than two years ago

No, that’s deflation.

If you’re talking about investing, that’s different. The dollar is still worth less on its own. It just made extra dollars in the meantime.

nimbleplum40··on Cancel Zoning If we want to fix the housing-affordability crisis zoning must go
Rent control is great for people who were lucky enough to live in them. It’s not so great for underprivileged people now who would like to move to NYC for all of the economic opportunity, but can’t because housing is so expensive. All of the rent controlled (and to a large degree, rent stabilized) apartments are off market and don’t rotate frequently because people stay in them even when they don’t need the space because moving somewhere smaller would cost more.
nimbleplum40··on Cancel Zoning If we want to fix the housing-affordability crisis zoning must go
They really aren’t though. Even New York is filled with tons of somewhat wasted space and excessive car infrastructure. Especially in the outer burrows.
nimbleplum40··on Car Bloat: “Huge Cars Are Terrible for Society”
