nitai··on Show HN: Kumbukum, open source memory infrastructure for teams
With how we build it, the content doesn't really matter. The AI and Typesense embedding model handles many of the relationships, so the AI tools don't need to do all the work. Mostly just calling "search_knowledge".

Most teams do not suffer from a lack of information. They suffer from context being scattered across notes, chats, docs, URLs, tickets, and AI sessions, with no reliable way to retrieve the right piece at the right time. Even a good search is not enough if the underlying memory layer is fragmented or opaque.

We have not seen many setups that preserve context and decisions well over time without ongoing cleanup. Usually, people fall back on some combination of repeated prompting, summaries, manual docs, or isolated memory within a single tool. That works for a while, but it decays.

Our view is that the better approach is not endless summarization. It provides teams with a shared memory layer where notes, decisions, URLs, and reusable context remain inspectable, editable, and portable, so retrieval has something durable to work with in the first place.

nitai··on Ask HN: Best stack for building a desktop app?
100% Tauri. It’s totally awesome and fast.
nitai··on [dead]
Is this a typo or is this $100/year as in 8.33/month?
nitai··on Ask HN: What's the best way to handle internal tech support?
We have customers with the same requirements and they started using my system at https://helpmonks.com

They are conversing internally with it. You can also use Slack to get notified. If a conversation is worth it they then either use the Trello plugin to create a card there or link to a new conversation in Discourse.

Hope this helps.

nitai··on Ask HN: For those who don't have children, what do you do during your free time?
All the things that you did before you had kids :)
nitai··on Ask HN: Tired founders facing acquihire – please advise
You have no faith in your own business. Sell it. Move on. Live is too short.
nitai··on Ask HN: What do you use for recurring billing?
I've looked at all the providers and couldn't find one that was flexible enough and also isnt overcharging, I.e. paying for the service, credit card charges, payment gateway, etc.

That said, I've found cheddargetter to work quite nice. Has an API, includes the payment gateway, and provides enough flexibility for custom prices per subscription. So far I've implemented three startups with it.

Hope this helps.

nitai··on Ask HN: What SaaS customer service tools does your startup use?
Helpmonks (https://helpmonks.com) is being used by a lot of startups. One of the main reasons is because the price is based on mailbox(es) and not on users.
nitai··on Ask HN: Who is switching away from MacBooks this year?
I already did some time ago. I got a surface pro and until you own one you don't know what you are missing. The form factor is simply awesome.

Then I also used to have a xps13 with Ubuntu. Great machine.

I've recently switched to a T460s with 20gb ram, 1tb SSD and i7. Comes with all the ports you need and want. It's light and fast. Used to run Ubuntu for a while full time. Recently switched to windows 10 and the WSL is a game changer. Reminds me of the good old Mac days.

nitai··on Ask HN: What could disrupt email?
I don't think there is an issue with email per se. It's more that there hasn't been much "evolution" in its use.

Though, Google and other companies have definitely tried to make email "better".

After an elaborate phase of talking to hundreds of companies, I've created a platform that has the approach of "collaborative email". It's providing an additional layer to email that helps companies to keep track of all those customer emails (you can check it out at http://helpmonks.com).

In any case, I think in adding additional service around email is where the real disruption lies.

nitai··on Ask HN: Will you really move away from Apple hardware?
I already switched. Got a Thinkpad t460s. Has a great screen, 20gb ram, 1tb SSD.

I run Ubuntu and can do just about everything with it. No regrets here.

nitai··on Ask HN: Which VPN would you recommend?
I used to be a customer of PIA but the speed wasn't good anymore and I got blocked.

I switched to ExpressVPN and they are very reliable. Especially if you travel in Asia.

In addition, they have dedicated router firmwares so you can secure your whole network.

nitai··on Ask HN: What is the best Linux Laptop 2016?
Check out the latest dell xps13. They come with 16gb ram, ssd, great screen, etc. Also pre-installed with ubuntu
nitai··on Ask HN: Anyone else planning to head back to Microsoft?
Unfortunately, SourceTree is still horrible on Windows. I've written them couple of times, but no feedback. Guess Atlassian doesn't care.

Haven't found a good alternative on Windows for a Git GUI tool that comes with Git-Flow.

nitai··on Ask HN: Anyone else planning to head back to Microsoft?
Same here. I actually moved from a 13" Retina MacBook Pro to a Surface Pro 3. Can do everything and love it.
nitai··on Ask HN: What will be the future for email?
Email is pretty much here to stay. It is more that users and organizations need to "learn" how to manage emails better. Furthermore, email might not be the main way of communication with your customers anymore, but still will be one of the main pillars.

This is one of the reasons, why I started my 6th company called Helpmonks (http://helpmonks.com) in this space. It simply helps organizations to collaborate on emails. My company is not the only one in this space.

nitai··on Ask HN: What OS do you run?
16GB for sure. This is one of the reasons why I stay with Mac. There are not many PC laptops with more than 8GB RAM.
nitai··on Ask HN: What OS do you run?
This is a question that comes at the right time for me.

I just went two weeks with a Asus UX305 and Ubuntu 14.04. Everything worked out of the box. Beautiful hardware, too.

Since I run all my servers on Ubuntu LTS I really wanted to go with Ubuntu Desktop.

However, after two weeks I'm going back to MacOS X. Reason is that I'm just way faster with MacOS X. Additionally, and I hate to say this, but it is not the OS alone anymore theses days.

Applications can make or break your decision. Something like Sourcetree is awesome, Arq (for backup) is a simple no-brainer. The option to use Time-Machine and re-install a Mac is painless. Dash for documentation simply rocks, Slack as an independent app is very convenient, etc.

nitai··on Ask HN: Since CitizenFour, have you changed the way you conduct yourself online?
This is something I thought about it for a long time, too. I've been following this for years and was always suspicious about all the "free" services and what their motivation is behind it all.

Here is a list of apps/extensions I use:

- Firefox with disconnect.me, HTTPS everywhere, Adblock.

- Never EVER use Google for search. Always use DuckDuckGo.

- Deleted my Facebook account. - Never ever use Skype (I refuse anyone who wants to use skype) There are other alternatives.

- Whenever possible I use a VPN (mine it privateinternetaccess)

- Never use any storage services like Dropbox, OneDrive, GDrive, etc.

Now that being said, I struggle with some "habits" and alternatives. These are:

- Google Apps, especially email. There is a reason why it works and so many people use it. I've tried Thunderbird, Apple Mail, Airmail, Outlook, etc. But somehow always go back to gmail :-(

On another note, I wonder what people use for an operating system?!?

I myself use MacOS X. I run many servers, all of them are Ubuntu Servers. I love Linux. However for a desktop app, I need to be productive and fast. Every time I want to switch to Linux I find some app that is not working and I need to use a VM for that.

Is it even worth considering a switch of operating systems? Too paranoid?

nitai··on An excessive list of free services for open source projects
Helpmonks (http://helpmonks.com) - Team Email Management. Simplified. - Free for open source projects and non-profit organizations.

Razuna (http://razuna.org) - most popular open source Digital Asset Management

nitai··on Ask HN: What are you working on and why is it cool?
What: I'm working on http://helpmonks.com right now. It helps teams to manage the never ending flow of emails.

Why: Some have similar tools, but they all concentrate on the HelpDesk aspect of it. Instead of re-inventing the wheel we simply integrate with popular existing helpdesk apps. Furthermore, we encourage sales and marketing to use our app.

Thanks.

nitai··on Why you might not want to incorporate in the USA
Ok, wasn't good before. Now completely reinstalled WP and all good again. Sorry guys.
nitai··on Why you might not want to incorporate in the USA
> I can't even visit Europe without a Schengen visa

Where are you from? US citizens can freely come to Europe without the need for any Visa. You can even freely travel within the Schengen area without showing your passport once.

nitai··on Why you might not want to incorporate in the USA
As a company owner, wanting to open an office, deploy people and live in the chosen country, is much much easier in Europe then in the US.

Just about every country welcomes you and even offers help in the form of some sort of fund or start-up program.

nitai··on Why you might not want to incorporate in the USA
Thank you for your comment. As a fact I know 10+ US citizens that have had no problem coming to Germany and live and work. All self employed and sufficient to provide for themselves for some time.

It might have changed, but the last time I've checked it was way easier then getting any Visa in the USA.

Speaking off, yes, we tried to get a B* visa but the 67000 visa they issue per year was filled within 3 days. One can apply again in June/July (not exactly sure).

nitai··on Why you might not want to incorporate in the USA
Done just about everything and can't get get it out. Funny is that it only exists in this one article. Rest of the site is ok.
nitai··on Why you might not want to incorporate in the USA
It looked like someone got access through a plugin to the htaccess file and some db entries.

This article helped (http://blog.sucuri.net/2010/07/understanding-and-cleaning-th...) though I only found one db entry. However fixed the htaccess file.

nitai··on Why you might not want to incorporate in the USA
I hear you. The payment gateways in DK simply suck. However, Braintree and Stripe are now all over Europe too.
nitai··on Why you might not want to incorporate in the USA
Wow... I really like the US, but these draconian laws make it difficult to justify moving there. Of course, if you grow up like this and don't know better...
