nxobject··on Oldest GUI application that still runs on Windows 11
Hmm… I’ll say I’m not the biggest fan of the empty chasms of space left by the docks and menu windows. As much as NS/OS got right, they really think people would want to maximize their windows.
nxobject··on Why is this fingerprinting script creating bioweapons?
Now I'm curious: what was in the watermark that would trigger Outlook? (I'm having some fun speculating. My guess right now is a ye olde "bu¥ vi@gr@ ch33p!!!!" spam trigger.)
nxobject··on Sebastian Raschka's from-scratch video course on building reasoning models
> more complex that biological systems

If that was the case, I wish that would translate itself to better understanding of dementia, as someone caretaking for a parent and at risk myself…

nxobject··on Emacs Turns 50
It looks like exc.el is built on top of a reactive UI framework, which, well, would have been incomprehensible to the first users of GNU Emacs on PDP-11 UNIX…

nxobject··on Emacs Turns 50
TFA begins before GNU Emacs proper, but, still: does age and portability make Elisp the ultimate write-one-run-everywhere language?
nxobject··on Evidence of a spying operation by ICE against left-wing social movements
> One of the Largest Anti-Left Surveillance Operations in US History
nxobject··on Expanding our partnership with GSA to bring Claude to all levels of government
Huh – I always thought GSA was still full of Elon's minions.
nxobject··on ChatGPT Keeps Telling People 404 Media Can Solve Their Tech Support Problems
And to think some people are paying SEO firms millions to pollute crawl material...

Also in Oregon (Portland), slow-walking the release of names associated with "identifiable" IDs:

nxobject··on Dutch government had hacked into Jared Kushner's phone
Hey, according to the Snowden leaks, what’s a little spying among friends?
nxobject··on eMudhra to exit global SSL/TLS certificate business
Update: all of the certificates are rejected as of Trust Asset Version 1013 (as of UTC 2026/10/23, 11:30AM).
nxobject··on eMudhra to exit global SSL/TLS certificate business
“I am eMudhra!”
nxobject··on eMudhra to exit global SSL/TLS certificate business
Luckily enough, they now have no reason to answer these questions and keep shtum forever…
nxobject··on eMudhra intermediate CA compromise
My own bet is that a deity gave these numbers to someone in a dream, like the most idiotic retelling of Ramanujan's life story.
nxobject··on eMudhra intermediate CA compromise
If my career was ever exciting enough to let me participate in a key ceremony, you'd bet I'd go all in on the Seriousness and Gravity. Hell, I'd come in a monk's habit.
nxobject··on Oregon lawmakers approve money to buy an iconic waterfall listed on Redfin
I think it was sold precisely because the foundation didn't want to care for it going forward:

> “There were a lot of people that were hiking on the property, and while we welcome that, we wanted to ensure that the proper stewardship was overseeing it.”

IIRC, it was a fairly hard trail -- the hike in has ~500ft elevation gain in only ~1 mile. That does need a lot of seasonal upkeep.

nxobject··on eMudhra intermediate CA compromise
macOS users – I think you'll need to disable SIP; then it's easier to search for "emsign" directly in Keychain Access.

If you went to PSU, was the geology department still in that damn basement?
nxobject··on Android apps running native on macOS
I'm looking forward to installing a TOTP authenticator app, as awful as it is in principle.
nxobject··on Wine ported to OpenBSD
Hey, modern versions of Excel have a GPU-accelerated computation engine.
nxobject··on Monte-Carlo Simulations
As a statistician, I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention bootstrapping - theoretically distinct, but another demonstration of the power of randomization techniques.
nxobject··on Claude reveals ECDSA curve origins
> moat widening between the model providers, their government partners, and the public.

Part of me wonders whether the NSA/other TLA has either (a) an unrestricted model from a lab with less scruples like SpaceX, or (b) an in-house model, either abliterated or with data they've bought themselves.

nxobject··on BIPM decides to stop adding leap seconds to UTC
Having heard that neutrinos explained the scientific basis of zodiac signs on personality, I'd hope that they'd be more busy trying to set up their underground neutrino detectors /s.
nxobject··on Wayland desktop for Linux with skeuomorphic design
Welcome back, Microsoft Bob!
nxobject··on Libreboot 26.10 "Ominous Olive" released with UEFI, Chromebook support
Well, yes, this is a project to create a fully libre, GPL'd boot chain free of binary blobs. The few users I know stick with aging ThinkPads. I'm not sure what you expected.
nxobject··on The Dock on Mac, from OS 10 to macOS 27
Good on OP for pronouncing the Roman numeral "X" as His Steveness intended.
nxobject··on Dutch tax authorities cancel Microsoft 365 cloud rollout and turn to open source
I suspect the fact that the Netherlands hosts the ICC might have made this a little more salient, too.
nxobject··on A Dynamic and Distributed Virtual GPU Cloud Built on Idle Apple Silicon Devices
If anything, Apple has every incentive to hop on the Linux Foundation train like MS. Just for containers, of course ;)
nxobject··on A Dynamic and Distributed Virtual GPU Cloud Built on Idle Apple Silicon Devices
I actually see the logic there: Apple as a “harmless consumer device company” is probably one will remain very geographically diversified in the long run, between the China and America markets.

(Interestingly enough, I think PRC and ROC are combined in public financials.)

nxobject··on A Dynamic and Distributed Virtual GPU Cloud Built on Idle Apple Silicon Devices
At this point, I’m sure bankrolls a significant amount of R&D in new MSes and build-out capital, in return for guaranteed capacity on the first production lines. I’m not sure the extra juice of outright ownership is worth the squeeze.

(As much as conglomerates are fun…)
