obrajesse··on Codex for almost everything
They did! I didn't actually think we were going to make it into one of the launch videos for this. That was a very pleasant surprise.

And they've been lovely to work with as we got this put together.

I’ve seen this a couple of times recently. Including right after compact. I’ll /feedback it next time I see it
obrajesse··on Show HN: Ghost Pepper – Local hold-to-talk speech-to-text for macOS
I'll have you know that I'm Matt's top contributor to Ghost Pepper and I'm nearly fifty

But I did it because I wanted it to work exactly the way I wanted it.

Also, for kicks, I (codex) ported it to Linux. But because my Linux laptop isn't as fast, I've had to use a few tricks to make it fast. https://github.com/obra/pepper-x

And indeed, Ghost Pepper supports parakeet v3

I mean, we're a two person company. I can assure you that all that writing wasn't about content marketing.

But, just for completeness sake, the list of people who got blindsided by the con artist who was ultimately behind a lot of the crazy included both our experienced local on-the-ground project manager and the factory owner.

obrajesse··on PiWrite – Kindle Paperwhite to Write
Historically, at least, USB networking was pretty straightforward to enable on a jailbroken Kindle.
obrajesse··on Youtube2Webpage: Create Websites with Text from Videos
Author here: This was indeed a quick hack. And Perl is still my fastest language for banging out a quick prototype. (I used to be the Perl 5 project lead. I’ve spent a lot of time with Perl.)
obrajesse··on Youtube2Webpage: Create Websites with Text from Videos
That’s correct.

Yup! It’s basically a glorified shell script. Sometimes the old ways are useful.

We've started with Codespark Academy for our pre-literate kiddo. At first he said "I don't like this, it's boring."

And 20 minutes later came back with "Daddy, can you help me? This program is in a loop and it will run forever"

Flash-forward a few months and he bursts into the bathroom while I'm showering to show me the game he made in their side-scrolling platformer authoring environment: "You need to grab the jetpack, then you can fly over the wall of fire to get the coin and win."

obrajesse··on Ask HN: How does one go about bringing a hardware product to market?
Thirded. But they probably won't talk to you anyway.
obrajesse··on Ask HN: How does one go about bringing a hardware product to market?
If you're using a pre-certified BT module, the costs can be dramatically lower than you might expect. Ditto doing your lab testing "over there" rather than in the US.

If it's not an intentional radiator, you can get multiple rounds of FCC+CE testing for USD650 in Shenzhen these days.

obrajesse··on Ask HN: How does one go about bringing a hardware product to market?
That's a pretty common pattern. To a first approximation, you will never outcompete clones on cost or distribution. Chinese patents and trademarks are actually helpful if you need to enforce, as are good contracts written by a Chinese lawyer in Chinese.[1]

You can outcompete them on customer service, community, brand, and quality.

For most consumerish products, I would not be worried about a clone stealing your design files. It is incredibly cheap to clone the mechanical parts of a product from photos or a single copy bought retail. For most consumer electronics, the clones would be unlikely to use the expensive western parts and designs you would. Instead, you're likely to see really fascinating cost engineering around parts you didn't know existed.

[1] I have sued a supplier in China, who did some sketchy stuff. It was a fascinating process. Contrary to the conventional wisdom and to our expectations, the court actually helped us get back our tooling and inventory.

Hi, I'm Jesse. I'm 1/2 of Keyboardio. We have, indeed, been through some stuff, but don't let that scare you off of hardware. We're currently in manufacturing for our third keyboard product.

We're generally pretty happy to chat with first-time hardware founders. Feel free to drop me a note at jesse@keyboard.io.

obrajesse··on Treatment for Tinnitus with Stimulation of Auditory and Non-Auditory Nerves
"This study was approved by the Institutional Review Board (IRB) of the Wiltse Memorial Hospital Joint Research Ethics Committee in Suwon, South Korea (IRB approval number: 2021-W07). The requirement for written informed consent was waived by the IRB as this was a retrospective study of the patients’ chart records."

obrajesse··on $1 Unistroke Recognizer (2007)
There's a good reason for that. Graffiti was....derivative of Unistroke, which was developed at PARC as, IIRC, part of the Parctab project. Xerox even sued.

https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=12310029

Fun fact: You can implement a "classic" Unistroke recognizer just by dividing the character up into quadrants. Every glyph had a unique sequence of quadrant traversals. http://www.yorku.ca/mack/ExperimentSoftware/javadoc/ca/yorku...

obrajesse··on Amazon Co-founder Mackenzie quietly gave over $4B to 384 organizations in 2020
I believe it means 'general operations' - Ms Scott's gifts have been unrestricted, with atypically light reporting requirements. Basically, she's trusting the non-profit recipients of her donations to know how to spend their money to accomplish their missions and isn't making them bend over backwards to appease her.
obrajesse··on Show HN: Wasmino = WASM and Arduino – Running Arduino Code in Browser
This is incredibly cool. One place I could see it being super useful is in making it easier to write regression tests for Arduino code.

I'm one of the developers of https://github.com/keyboardio/Kaleidoscope - We've ended up putting together a 'virtual' Arduino core (https://github.com/keyboardio/Kaleidoscope-Bundle-Keyboardio...) that compiles to native code, so that we can run a simulator and test suites with gtest and gmock. (https://github.com/keyboardio/Kaleidoscope/tree/master/testi... / https://github.com/keyboardio/Kaleidoscope/runs/1632368671?c... ) It's super-useful, but a browser-based sim might be even better for this.

obrajesse··on K-9 Mail removed from Google Play Store due to listing description
Play Developer Support just DMed me on Twitter to tell me that they'd accepted the resubmitted app without the problematic description.
obrajesse··on K-9 Mail removed from Google Play Store due to listing description
We added that to the description because otherwise folks searching for "k9" or "k9mail" or "k-9 email" couldn't find the app or got pushed to sketchy malware pretending to be K-9. If Play's search worked, we wouldn't have had to stick keywords in the description. (But also, it wasn't against policy when we did it 5+ years ago. And I absolutely don't mind them asking us to change it. But the zero-strikes removal thing pisses me off.)
