origini··on Life with Down Syndrome
Its a nice article and a positive one.

Unfortuna another documentary about people with Down Syndrome were more heartbreaking. A young girl got told from a doctor that not only shouldn't she get to try pregnant, the chance is very low already and that she has other medical concerns she needs to handle.

Not something she could handle without a proper care taker though.

As a small niche like color key or IR photography or anything else everyone else did once :D

Utter ignorance to begin with.

I wanted to do street photography too, I never did.

origini··on Supermarket freezers across Europe hit by second suspected cyber-attack
It shouldn't matter anyway. The endpoints should been using default and secure technology or vpn only.
origini··on GPT-Rosalind-6 System Card Addendum
Ah yes the 'language models!!!' which still solved a milenium problem.

Drugdiscovery has also a lot of physics involved btw

And you said ML yourself. You do understand, that the current LLM explositon also means that ML in itself gets more funding and now infrastructure for ML itself got easier to get, cheaper and faster right?

And yes for sure bigger and better LLMs can help: Alone for finding potential better or more optimized experiments, there is value in an LLM having all the current research in context.

origini··on GPT-Rosalind-6 System Card Addendum
When did you check and what did you find?

For me its not a solved problem and AI/ML would still help to solve plenty Drugdiscovery in itself is such a broad area

There are still normal labs out there doing research for years on one drug alone

And biology of humans is huge and complex, not only is it not solved, its also expensive.

Even if you just not do ML drug discovery, AI can hellp with making the research faster: writing grants, finding issues, creating plans/ideas/suggestions, hepling with finding the newest research, writing code for supporting or analysis, controling microscopes and machines.

origini··on WTF Ubuntu?
Its not just Canonical but yes when a few month ago the local root exploit appeared, it wasn't fixed for a few days either.
origini··on Mathematics has changed. Let's act like it
For humanitys sake i would argue.

But yes it will be very interesting if we don't reach any ceiling if another fitness function than "more money" will arise or not.

origini··on Mathematics has changed. Let's act like it
The gap is closing with every release. In parallel we get improvements in chips, Google announced 'dreaming' and there might just be an AGI level of thinking.

I'm not seeing any slow down right now and I would call myself also a more diverse person knowing and acting on more than just software development. I don't have the feeling that i had to learn that many extra skills to try myself on other topics.

IF the world models or LLMs learn to simulate at runtime, they can simulate a task and do adhoc RL.

origini··on Mathematics has changed. Let's act like it
Yep!

And i'm looking forward to it to a certain degree. If progress is not stopping or showing any slowdown, we will run either in very basic physical limits or we will continue having quite an interesting time ahead.

origini··on Mathematics has changed. Let's act like it
I meant only AI not physical AI.

But Physical AI is on the path to be done in 30 years.

origini··on Ask HN: Which TV do you recommend for privacy?
I think a lot of peple don't know how you can do this the right way:

1. just don't give your TV internet and use another device on the HDMI

OR

2. Buy semi professional network infrastructure from companies like ubiquity: They support a feature called VLAN: You can put your tv into the privacy VLAN and just block internet access on your network layer, or you could filter stuff etc.

origini··on Mathematics has changed. Let's act like it
The field before AI was build up so that humans can learn and understand and teach other humans how to advance these fields.

AI is here 'suddenly'.

Let them discuss this out, let them go through the emotions.

And its unclear today IF we still need anyone doing anything in 5 years or not. In theory we could also just freeze 90% of things we do and put everythig into AI as a human race and just let AI do everything in 5 years.

We are not doing this because we don't know yet if it will play out like this, we don't know how much a human still needs to understand.

And to be clear, what you see as a 'problem' is just a capitalistic issue, not a human race issue: Its absolutly fine for us as humans to persue understanding for the sake of it

origini··on Backdoor in Claude Code for VS Code extension on the Cursor Marketplace
Don't forget: To make LLM useful you give it EVERYTHING it needs to know to be useful and if you don't use a certain provider with proper legal status, this is just gone.

We probably transfered more code/codebases and company secrets to random endpoints than ever before.

Btw. you could setup a sandbox and limit access

I don't think Spacex cares at all about Anthropics IPO just because they rent out their compute.

Big companies are not just 'Company' they are a lot of small teams doing their own things. They need to coordinate with other people for public announcements etc. and security team is probably also looking at it.

Thats not the same. The banking system doesn't just has regulations, it also has the state behind it.

And its a second layer: fractional deposit ONTO fractional deposit.

origini··on Should a medical diagnosis reshape the past? (2025)
Excuse?

Set proper boundaries and draw a line. If you can't help them, they are still humans on the same planet and live their first and only life.

Empathy shouldn't stop even if 'the worst kind of human' is getting electrocuted.

origini··on Should a medical diagnosis reshape the past? (2025)
Its not just a medical diagnosis of what reshaphes your past, its also growing.

Seeing why a person is who they are, their cirumstances, their unability to grow, etc.

I don't hate people just because they are 'bad'. I ignore them instead or try to interact with them as far as I can enjoy it.

You know that one weird/bad/off/agressive/whatever parent or familiy member or friend or neighbour.

Self reflection is a skill, change is hard, acceptance is hard and even with all of this: world views differe for different reasons.

Dementia in this case might be a lot easier to 'grasp' than "Oh mother had a bad upringing and no friends telling her what good/bad is" or whatever it is.

origini··on Ask HN: Are you tired too in this AI era?
I'm quite energized by this.

Its crazy to see how we can now do things which were not thinkable a few years back.

Finally i read real progress i can see and use by myself and not constantly some crypto and blockchain stuff.

While I would like to have a stable world/live and for sure AI is disruptive as hell to a lot of people and potentially to me too, at least progress of technology i can't stop.

And i thought about automatistaion for decades for sure, I don't play devils advocate and thinking "yeah its great that we invented the loom" while hating AI for what it is: tech.

In worst case I only watch one 45 minute ai summary video from my YT channels, but I do have a lot of random small experiments i'm playing around with anyway.

What i discoved though: if you never go above 20$ subscriptions, you hold yourself back because you don't think about approaching bigger experiements.

There is no reason for you to trust anyone.

Either yo utry it out and come to your own conclusion or not?

And you do not know what their particular usecase is for work.

origini··on Binance-hacker-1029 – $5.6B stolen from Binance
Its a weird loophole or so.

You take 1 $ from someone and give them a token, now you have money the other not. In theory you need to make sure you keep the 1$ but you want to pay people and you are greedy so you invest it and suddenly everyone is broke.

Geothermal and water.

If than there is still some oil/gas we need to burn and haven't build long DC lines between sunny area and non sunny, its perhaps fine or we start that much that we just generate methan

There was not a single real tangable way of determining this before AI Slop.

For sure it was less to review, less options but still.

So what did you use? I used things like Reviews, skimming through, getting a referal through a blog or hn and buying from reputational sources.

HN is a filter. Same as all the other things we have.

origini··on New iMac with M6
But thats not the rumor I mentioned.

Yes the latest chip is better but the rumor is that the M7 has either more/better parts for LLM math OR that it has significiant changes to memory bandwidth too.
