pasc1878··on Every Windows 11 app should kill Electron, and Discord just showed why
Sorry can you show a decent GUI app in Electron compared with a native one.

You show this by all your other comments on memory. The reason apps take memory is Electron.

Plus I prefer apps that behave like OS native apps not the reduced GUI of web apps.

But in UK and I thought EU if a direct debit is wrong the Bank has to refund it.
pasc1878··on Dutch 'idealist' bank ASN blocks non-Google Android, including GrapheneOS
I am in the UK. Yes fewer branches but there is the idea of setting up joint branches in some places where all the high street banks have left.
pasc1878··on Dutch 'idealist' bank ASN blocks non-Google Android, including GrapheneOS
Yes you can still use cheques, credit cards, use ATM to get money and see statements. Many still allow phone banking.

You can go to your branch to do many things as well. (OK fewer people do that so there are fewer branches).

I thought the take money out of someones account was just an issue in USA.

UK definitely and I thought EEC banks use a different system that stops that.

pasc1878··on Partial Operator Precedence
No you can have no precedence at all see Lisp and APL for examples.

Lisp because everything is explicit and only the form just inside an opening parenthesis does anything. APL as all is scanned right to left.

pasc1878··on Medicare Will Pay $50k for Your Heart Attack. It Should Pay $100 to Prevent It
Replace colonoscopies in that sentence by anything that can be made money from and pays doctors.
pasc1878··on Serbia just elected the world's brainiest parliament
Although I suspect they would have got richer anyway just being able to trade with the EU and not being controlled by Russia,
pasc1878··on Medicare Will Pay $50k for Your Heart Attack. It Should Pay $100 to Prevent It
No it is not an alternative to a colonoscopy it is a different test.

If this test finds something then the next step is not treatment it is you need a colonoscopy.

It is a test that cuts down on the number of colonoscopies needed and is cheap enough to find problems earlier than everyone having a colonoscopy which is just unaffordable,

pasc1878··on Medicare Will Pay $50k for Your Heart Attack. It Should Pay $100 to Prevent It
That is not a colonoscopy. That is a stool sample and as other replies noted this gets sent out every two years to every one. In the UK from age 60 Australia seems to be from 50.

If that tests positive then you get a colonoscopy to check more things. If you have had colon cancer then you get a full colonscopy evry two years and an MRI every year.

pasc1878··on AI use leads UC Berkeley math professor to see 'no point' in grading homework
In the UK whichj has the highest electricity prices in Europe all parts of the electricity supply chain are owned by companies.
pasc1878··on AI use leads UC Berkeley math professor to see 'no point' in grading homework
Yes they do.

Most UK large companies had cafeterias in the 1980s now they don't and you have to go out to get lunch.

Training always costs thousands a year.

If you train a person you have to pay their salary and overheads. whilst they are being trained and are not fully productive. Plus you need to pain for the people and machinery needed to provide the training. Much cheaper to do non of these.

Apple has pretty well always got users to do things via the GUI – look at the Lisa and Classic MacOS.

CLI is just a thing that NeXT had and even that made it easy to use GUI tools.

Xcode is a GUI tool – it happens to expose some cli tools but they could be covered up – however some developers would complain a lot so I don't see that happeneing.

pasc1878··on AI use leads UC Berkeley math professor to see 'no point' in grading homework
It is much cheaper for a company to do NO training.

It does not matter if Education/Training is done by the government or another company all that matters is that the company does not have any training in its accounts. If it has that is an obvious cost to cut.

Long term this is not good for a company but for the next year or two at least it is better and that is all that their shareholders will look at,

pasc1878··on AI use leads UC Berkeley math professor to see 'no point' in grading homework
No that will not happen as the company has to pay and it shows in their accounts.

Much cheaper not to train anyone and let the state or pupil pay for training.

See lack of apprenticeships for a case of this.

Yes there are economic reasons to back Trump.

If you don't then actions might be taken against you see CBS and other media having to pay.

pasc1878··on New Withings Users Must Pay $99/Year for Apple Health Syncing
I had the Withings sleep monitor – it never managed to sync with Apple Health anyway.

Looking at the support forums many others had issues with their then new app replacing a working one.

So I don't think this will have much effect as it didn't work anyway.

In Europe a small city car will drive to the next town and in much of Europe to the beach.

"In Europe 100 miles is a long way in USA/Australia 100 years is long ago"

There are iconic expensive cars e.g. Jaguar E-type, Aston Martin DB5 and very expensive e.g. Rolls Royce Shadow.

The shift+insert, delete etc. are from MSDOS as far as I used them – they might have been copied from a previous OS.

pasc1878··on Visa, Mastercard, Major Banks Facing New Litigation over 'Anticompetitive' Fees
Yes I know pay by bank – I have used that to pay my plumber. In effect it replaces paying by cheque.

But the problem is that if you use it to pay for a service and do not get the service you can only claim off who you paid and that requires taking them to court while Credit Cards just require phoning up the card provider. Debit cards are between the two.

pasc1878··on Visa, Mastercard, Major Banks Facing New Litigation over 'Anticompetitive' Fees
It is the difference between Credit and Debit cards.

I could see Debit Cards being replaced by direct transfers.

The issue is what happens if who you pay too does not provide the srvice or just runs off with the money.

Under UK Law the customer can deal with the Credit Card issuer and get their money back with a direct payment it is npot always possible.

For debit cards I think the issue will refund if fraudelent but might take a battle. With direct payments the customer has a much harder job.
