patchtopic··on SSH Artwork
"kill the artist when patience is depleted"

drastic!

patchtopic··on Selfie-based authentication raises eyebrows among infosec experts
I have dropped online services and gone elsewhere for asking for this ridiculous requirement.
patchtopic··on The economics of the Birkin handbag
I prefer me a excellent condition pre-loved Crumpler bag from ebay :-)

almost zero prestige so reasonable prices

patchtopic··on Inside the failed attempt to backdoor SSH globally that got caught by chance
it was also essentially unusable without a crapload of third party patches that DJB would not include into the master release, but yes it was quite secure :-)
patchtopic··on Smart devices are turning out to be a poor investment
this leads us to the 2023 Word of the Year from the American Dialect Society:

patchtopic··on Two hundred reasons to not use Azure
I'm still fuming from when Azure cancelled my organisations PowerBI A1 instance account, and refused to explain why. We re-opened the account and got the report working. They cancelled it again.

A scientific reporting project trying PowerBI dead in the water.

I was called from leave, from the beach in Thailand, to try and untangle this mess. I couldn't. I'm the "linux guy" but all the "microsoft people" were at their wits end and didn't know what to do. A colossal kafkaesque maze mess of Microsoft support agents with cheerful "have a nice day and is their anything else we can help you with" emails canning the project, over and over. AND REFUSING TO EXPLAIN WHY.

=============================

Greetings for the day!

I have received an update from Account Research Team: As part of our strong commitment to the protection of our customers and our interest in preserving the quality and integrity of the Azure Marketplace, we perform supplementary reviews of accounts which may exhibit irregular or suspicious activity. Your account was selected for one of these reviews and after careful consideration, this account will remain closed.

Please understand that we keep security checks like these in place in order to protect the quality and integrity of the Azure Marketplace

patchtopic··on A near 100pct renewable grid for Australia is feasible and affordable
I have a "normal" Melbourne brick veneer home, with decent roof insulation and insulated curtains. It handles the heat well for 1 day but a 2 or 3 day heatwave of 38 degree plus temperatures the bricks heat up in the sun and it gets quite uncomfortable even at night.
patchtopic··on Meet the AI-Censored? Naked Capitalism
someone didn't read the article!
patchtopic··on Australian Net Guide – Issue 1, March 1996
nice one! memories!
patchtopic··on No one cares about open-source, until
I have been using Cryptpad the last few months (self hosted) and it's working great. Keep up the good work.
patchtopic··on Permutation City (1994)
A timeless classic.
patchtopic··on Show HN: Quetta – A privacy-first web browser with enhanced ad blocker inside
a fully privacy first browser needs to be open source.
patchtopic··on A Canadian payroll dependency chart
some valid points at the start, but as soon as the "woke mind virus" is mentioned we know we are dealing with a moron who can't see the forest for the trees - a classic example of Godwin's Second Law
patchtopic··on Microsoft Outlook Blocking All Email from Tutanota.com Domain as Spam
anti competitive!
patchtopic··on Misinformation should be refuted, not censored
this reasoning assumes some kind of reasoned one on one debate, and does not take into account intentional "flooding the zone" tactics.
patchtopic··on Why has a useless cold medication been allowed on shelves for years?
with the chemists selling useless cold medicine but the streets EVEN MORE full of meth-heads than before, obviously this particular "war on (some) drugs" measure is a pathetic failure.
patchtopic··on Organic Maps
organic maps is great but it does not have street numbers.

I know this is a limit of the underlying OSM data it uses.

patchtopic··on Twitter has officially changed its logo to ‘X’
let's hope this goes as well as MySpace did under the wise stewardship of the Murdoch oligarchy.
patchtopic··on Stalwart All-in-One Mail Server (IMAP, JMAP, SMTP)
nice!
patchtopic··on Stalwart All-in-One Mail Server (IMAP, JMAP, SMTP)
can this handle multiple email domains on the same server?

i.e. mary@domaina.com and mary@domainb.com as different email accounts?

patchtopic··on I stopped buying new laptops (2020)
I work for a non profit org.

We sometimes purchase reconditioned laptops as they are good value for some use cases.

We have a lot of WfH users so need to courier laptops to some staff.

We recently had an insurance claim denied for a damaged reconditioned laptop as TNT/Fedex used a "no second hand goods" clause in their insurance to wriggle out paying up.

This has not stopped me purchasing reconditioned laptops, but something to be aware of and taken into account.

In fact just buying another reconditioned laptop was not a large expense and damaged laptops in transit are relatively rare.

patchtopic··on Second Life by Linden Lab, the company I've worked for since 2004, turn 20 today [video]
the last time I looked at Second Life a year or two ago, there was still no 64 bit Linux client, trying to connect to my old account quickly turned into some crazy obsolete library hell.. a quick look around and it appears to be the same situation.
patchtopic··on DIY-Audio-Heaven
it would be really great if someone did this level of objective measurement to settle the "HD555 is a crippled HD595" debate :-)
patchtopic··on Sennheiser HD 555 to HD 595 Mod
though then shouldn't the correct replacement part for the HD595 be a matched pair of drivers?
patchtopic··on Sennheiser HD 555 to HD 595 Mod
has anyone actually done the science and done measurements? with the web awash in measurement nerd hifi addicts you'd think this would have been established. though a moot point as this is an old article, referencing a model no longer available.
patchtopic··on The AT protocol is the most obtuse crock of shit
I assumed Hayes AT at first as well.
patchtopic··on Brave launches self-serve ads program
plus the exchanges they force you to use have had security issues, leaking my email out in a breach - whats the point of self custody cryptocurrency if BRAVE force me to provide my private ID information to insecure third parties?
patchtopic··on Brave launches self-serve ads program
I initially had good fun with brave and BAT, but the continual rug-pulling and changing the rules re: account verification, exchanges you can use, regions, with getting the "earned" BAT has made me give up as a big waste of time. Still a good security oriented browser, and I'm using it for that, just all the BAT/advertising stuff is not worth your time unless you like continually getting messed around with bureaucratic nonsense.

and yes, I'm aware some of this may be driven by regulatory stuff outside of the brave browser peoples control.
