patchtopic··on Launching the Libre Tech Shop

patchtopic··on Google Removed ClearURLs Extension from Chrome Web Store
thanks google for bringing this handy looking extension to my attention!
patchtopic··on Australia to introduce Google, Facebook legislation to parliament next week
The current Australian govt ruling party are a bunch of scumbags. Google is not much better.
patchtopic··on Cambridge Bitcoin Electricity Consumption Index
thanks! I missed that, yes now it makes sense, and is in the right ballpark.
patchtopic··on Cambridge Bitcoin Electricity Consumption Index
A simple "back of the envelope" power use calculation of the possible power use of the bitcoin network, using the total hash rate from https://www.coinwarz.com/mining/bitcoin/hashrate-chart ( 151.55 EH/s ) and assuming all Antminer S19 (110 TH/s for 3250 watts)

gives me a total power use of 0.00445 TWH which is very different to the 121 TWH on the cbeci site.. even given the efficiency range of mining gear (like if spread of included hw included stuff 10 x less efficient), cooling systems etc, what am I missing? I dont do these power calculations often so have a left a parameter out?

patchtopic··on Crony Beliefs
is this stating the "meme complex" idea using a different analogy?
patchtopic··on OVH Cloud shuts down Guerrilla Mail
A colo company could change the locks or pull the cable if coming under comparable legal pressure. Depending on the colo company?

I'm surprised that Guerrilla Mail havent at least put a temporary status web page up on their domain yet though..

patchtopic··on Is a billion dollars worth of server lying on the ground?
Now go stick some Dell servers in a colocation joint and run the numbers again :-)
patchtopic··on Samsung TV owners complain about increasingly obtrusive ads
find me a 55 inch monitor for $1000 AUD to use as my TV (with dedicated HTPC) and I'll be all over it..
patchtopic··on “I monitor my staff with software that takes screenshots”
"why are they spending so much time on guillotine web sites"?
patchtopic··on Hotel guest in Thailand jailed for defamation after posting bad online reviews
let us compare this with the case of Vorayuth Yoovidhya and Wichian Klanprasert

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Death_of_Wichian_Klanprasert

patchtopic··on Byte magazine (1984): Benchmarking Unix
The scripts still run, my ancient (1st or 2nd gen) Raspberry Pi gets 0.54 seconds for the multi .. 6 benchmark
patchtopic··on The Social Dilemma
https://thenib.com/mister-gotcha/ :-)
patchtopic··on User's Kindle eBook collection revoked by Amazon (2012)
It's exactly because of this kind of stuff I replaced my kindle with a Kobo when it wore out.
patchtopic··on Luckysheet, an open-source spreadsheet
A tabular, instantly updating set of information is one I'm frequently discussing with groups of people online, it is ridiculously handy even with the overhead of a web browser slowing things down, if it's updating live. Of course a secure and easy to set up way to do it without the browser would be great as well.
patchtopic··on Robert's Rules of Order (1876)
as utilised by Stringer Bell in The Wire
patchtopic··on No Code
"First, you work all month, and then you give half of the money to those who couldn't work."

fixed the wording for you.

patchtopic··on Show HN: Straight2Spam – Send your email right to someone's spam folder
Since it has the GTUBE you are intentionally making an email that will get bounced almost everywhere so you may as well not send it.
patchtopic··on Facebook executives shut down efforts to make the site less divisive
Do we have a non-Murdoch propaganda machine source for this article?

Yes FB is bad, but the Murdoch press is not a reliable source.

patchtopic··on Show HN: Self-hosted, ad-free, privacy-respecting alternative to Google search
my first thought was "if it's self hosted, don't I have to index the entire internet first before I use it..?"

.. before I read it's actually a frontend/proxy to google, not a separate thing. This is fine, but the seems a bit misleading to me.

patchtopic··on Ask HN: What website, from your early days on the net, do you miss?
yes, SUCK.COM was awesome.
patchtopic··on Introduction to Flat-File CMS
it's not perfect, but I had a positive experience recently creating a small web site with Publii:

https://getpublii.com/

patchtopic··on I have seen things
so do people who proudly crow that they didn't watch GoT get rewarded with little gold stars or something?
patchtopic··on How to Build a Healthcare Unicorn?
Perhaps they should step back and see what the successful healthcare system (read: longer lifespan) countries outside the USA do ..
patchtopic··on BorgBackup: Deduplicating Archiver
How does this compare against S3QL? Does it do multithreaded compression when backing up?

So far S3QL is the least worst of all these deduplicating/compressing/encrypting backup solutions I have tried, but I havent tried borgbackup. Despite it's stated focus on cloud object storage, S3QL also works great on NFS and local filesystems as a target as well.. and sshfs..

patchtopic··on Invidious: an alternative front-end to YouTube
Looks great, except the search seems very limited.
patchtopic··on The Isle of Man is not in the UK
this is possibly the real reason why the right wing press are/have been banging the brexit drum so hard.. tax havens...
patchtopic··on Thai Minister Orders Cafes, Restaurants to Collect Customers’ WiFi Data
There are lots of laws in Thailand that are sporadically, selectively, unevenly or not at all enforced.

The TM30 foreign resident laws in Thailand were put on the books in 1979 but they only decided to start enforcing them (albeit extremely inconsistently) in the last few months.

patchtopic··on Ask HN: Which email software do you use on Linux?
if it is a good design, this is a positive feature.. constantly breaking a good UI just to be hip and cool is not. I'm not against new designs if they bring improvements to the table, but mindless bandwagon jumping is a waste of time.
