peesem··on Diamond Transistor
try using a mouse or trackpad, they only seem to intercept pointer input. i also don't get affected when dragging the scrollbar or using the arrow keys.
peesem··on Diamond Transistor
i think they mean the sort of "inertial" scrolling that the site imposes
peesem··on Everything
not just person, AI startup! this'll be the one to save the world, i bet
peesem··on Everything
there are other ways to share code than a monorepo, namely independently versioned packages. you say dependency hell but if you're in control of everything you're in the best position to avoid that if you put thought into it. with a monorepo you could actually get worse results in some cases. say i change something in a graphics api for sudoku and suddenly the zoom clone doesn't work. yuck. i only buy the monorepo argument for systems of code that actually need to be deployed in sync, like server/client stuff or larger. iirc google has a massive monorepo for nearly all of their production code because basically all of it works together (server/client stuff, auth, etc)

also a monorepo like this is worse for human interaction, if you care. what if someone only wants to pull and work on sudoku? now they have to get everything else. issues and pull requests are also more annoying to varying degrees depending on use.

peesem··on Everything
shoving all of these vastly different applications into one monorepo does not bode well for them being seriously designed, maintained, and cared-about pieces of software. such is the nature of LLM development, i suppose.

not to mention that there are only three contributors and #2 is claude, although that might be because they just committed a bunch of previously-untracked code at once, i don't care to check.

peesem··on New iPad mini
notice, maybe, but care, definitely not. there's a reason TV manufacturers get away with leaving on that awful AI smoothing by default.
peesem··on SIMD-accelerated computer vision on a $2 microcontroller
nit: 5.1MP/s to 11.2MP/s is not an increase of 220%, it's an increase of 120%. it's 2.2x faster, but percentage increase starts at 0%, not 100%. 100% faster is double, 200% faster is triple.
peesem··on Color Names
related and also interesting, a color wheel "quantized" to named css colors: https://arantius.github.io/web-color-wheel/
peesem··on Way to Play Super Mario 64: On Apple Vision Pro
too clickbaity. this title should have just been "Super Mario 64 on Apple Vision Pro"
peesem··on Apple HomeView
apple's usb-c port placement strikes again. the port for the wall-mounted one is apparently in the middle of the back, so you'll have to take it off the wall or risk damaging your usb-c cables by trying to keep them between the device and the wall. if it was just on the bottom (like an iphone or ipad) you could leave it hanging there while plugged in to a nearby outlet
peesem··on FlowCE: Calculus on your TI-84 Plus CE
i don't see any changes in the fork of KhiCAS's giac that would suggest something like that.

https://github.com/tommyb3ll/ti-ce-giac https://github.com/tommyb3ll/ti-ce-giac/blob/main/kintg.cc#L...

why do you think it's unlikely? if KhiCAS does it, why wouldn't this fork?

peesem··on FlowCE: Calculus on your TI-84 Plus CE
is this just a total guess? the repository says it's forked from KhiCAS, which is a ti84 port of Giac/Xcas, which can do full Risch integration if necessary

https://github.com/KhiCAS/ti-ce-giac/blob/main/kintg.cc#L288...

peesem··on Valen's Memory Safety: A New Kind of Borrow Checking
nit: you need a better way of laying out asides/footnotes. when they get bunched up like at the start of this article you start having to scroll full screens back and forth. at least make the numbers on the asides link back to their position in the main text
peesem··on Show HN: gtlds.fyi – All the proposed new gTLDs
plenty are stupid or probably malicious but i'm happy for anything that will maybe convince people to stop making programs that check for a "valid" tld (they always have stale lists). i use an unusual ccTLD and i get told plenty that i've entered an invalid email
peesem··on Ask HN: Why is Ask HN only showing me 14 posts?
read the second sentence of my comment. if you'd like an example of a list that exists but is not on that page (in fact the one i mentioned not being able to remember), see https://news.ycombinator.com/genai-pushback
peesem··on Ask HN: Why is Ask HN only showing me 14 posts?
is there any place to find a full list of HN's lists? obviously there's the "lists" link at the bottom of the page but that is missing some, e.g. the above /ask (but /asknew is there?) and some others i've heard of but don't remember the link for e.g. a list of comments detected to be anti-ai

edit: just noticed /ask probably isn't there because it's in the navbar, lol. but still

peesem··on Type Safe Generic Data Structures in C
i guess i should say "the way that C++ _did_", although i do want to say "you know what i mean" since they do still share quite a bit
peesem··on Type Safe Generic Data Structures in C (2025)
zig doesn't "extend" C in the way that C++ does.
peesem··on Our AI Midwife
this is one case. there's no proof here that AI will generally do better than human doctors. consider also that the power it has to convince people to push for better medical treatments can also be used to push for worse ones, or to halt standard treatment entirely, at which point it is much harder for the medical system to intervene as they aren't interacting with doctors.
peesem··on Hole Punch: Sling your spaceship around gravitational fields
reminds me of Gravitee, except in that game the planets are pre-positioned and you're hitting a golf ball
peesem··on Don't couple your Go code to GitHub
why not just use replacements to begin with if you don't want to bother with setting up domains?

"replace example => github.com/example/example" at first, then change to "replace example => gitlab.com/example/example" or similar when there's a migration

(i don't use go, but i hope this is possible and i am confused if it's not)

peesem··on OpenAI GPT–6 Astra breaks Enigma message that has resisted solution since 2005
interesting, YouTube channel Veritasium just published a video on how Enigma was broken during WWII. at the very end they also give message that has yet to be decoded, although apparently they're different.

peesem··on Comparing reflection capabilities of C++, Zig and C3
"not an expert in zig" but you can't even look at the documentation to find the `@tagName` builtin to do exactly the problem posed?: https://ziglang.org/documentation/0.16.0/#tagName

i can literally google "zig enum to string" and the first result is a reddit post where the given solution is `@tagName`. i'm ready to write this post off as a low-effort ad for C3

peesem··on Steam Frame starts at $1059
in my experience this is only an issue when headsets are unbalanced between the front and back, since this results in the weight going on your nose/face rather than straight through your head to your neck. the frame's battery is on the back specifically for this reason in addition to the whole thing being relatively light anyway
peesem··on DeCloudflare
from en.action.md:

> Redirect or block "Cloudflare Warp" users from accessing your website. And provide a reason if you can.

come on, really? what does this achieve? only thing i can think of is trying to get the user off of WARP, but i can pretty confidently say that before doing that i'll just not use the website. or if i really care about the content i'll turn it off until i'm done and back on it goes

peesem··on DeCloudflare
just sort of a general complaint about how much the internet relies on cloudflare and what that means. massive point of failure, erratic browser checks & outright blocking, surveillance
peesem··on The Ancient Greek Water Clock That Kept the Most Accurate Time for 1,800 Years
seemingly hugged, unless they're doing overzealous IP blocking
peesem··on OpenAI stole mathematicians' private research from their own Codex chats
regardless of the validity of the claim, why post a link to Reddit when the Reddit post is just a link to a document? why not directly link to the document
peesem··on Dimethyl Mercury Exposure Incident at MIT
There's also an alert on the MIT emergency page, though it doesn't mention the substance by name: https://emergency.mit.net/
peesem··on Apple Silicon's Surprisingly Speedy SIMD
can people publish blog posts (and other things) literally anywhere else? especially now with nitter/xcancel/etc getting taken down
