philgo20··on Ask HN: Does anybody still use bookmarking services?
I have been using Refind for years. Happy with it.
philgo20··on Ask HN: What are good reads for designing APIs?
Care to elaborate?
philgo20··on Buffer Layoffs
Same reaction. They might be super transparent and everyone (in the comments at the bottom of the post) are in awe of it, but these numbers just make no sense.
philgo20··on MLDB – Machine Learning Database
A feature comparison with other solutions is a great idea. We'll work on that and share here.
philgo20··on Ask HN: Who is meeting up? (December 2012)
I am in. Just saw it today...
philgo20··on Gool.li - The New Meta-Search Revolution
I have to say: well done! I just tried @mkahlain new meta-search engine (yep, meta is back baby) http://www.gool.li/ and results are good!
philgo20··on So you are making good money, now STFU
I don't get it. What's the point of your post? You don't think there's any value in sharing how they did it? You really think they might bet copied and eventually failed because they shared their stories on HN or something?
philgo20··on 4 Insights from a Hacker News Launch
Would be more interesting to know how you go to #1. Great headline? Luck? Friends?
philgo20··on The simplest way to create a beautiful landing page for your iPhone app
I like the clean design and choice of color. #builtinmtl
philgo20··on Link Click Tracking: You’re Doing it Wrong
Faster is better.
philgo20··on Ask HN: Jobs/skills required in big data
I would start by looking at job description in hot "big data" startup to see what skills and technology they list. That should get you started and avoid learning the wrong stuff.

Hadoop?

philgo20··on Using Apache UIMA Concept Mapper Annotator with Python via JPyPe
Dr. Dub is a #montreal startup NLP hippie. Just sayin'.
philgo20··on The Problem with Facebook Connect
bingo
philgo20··on 6 Great Articles Every Hiring Managers Ought To Read
My best bookmarks. Always good to re-read before interviews and when reviewing applications.
philgo20··on Results of Joel Spolsky's "What Programmers Want" Survey
After reading about Joel Spolsky "What Programmers Want" survey, I thought it'd be interesting to know how programmers feel about their current employer.

Fill up the 3 questions survey, it really takes 3 minues https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/viewform?formkey=dEx6LUN...

Thank you already for taking the time, we'll publish the result on matchFWD blog at http://blog.matchfwd.com as soon as we have significant data.

philgo20··on Let Your Programmers Be Silly
I have huge respect for my team, don't worry.
philgo20··on Let Your Programmers Be Silly
Gotcha. Honestly I probably picked "silly" to get clicks ;-)
philgo20··on Let Your Programmers Be Silly
English is not my primary language so there could very well be a better adjective ;-)
philgo20··on Let Your Programmers Be Silly
I should have made it clearer that this shouldn't be allowed to individuals not meeting deadlines. That would not make sense. But actually, one of our best employee actually enjoy a little bikeshedding here and there. I blame his young age but it actually bring some fun in when it's most needed. Sometimes you just need to cool down.

thanks for teaching me a new word ;-)

philgo20··on Let Your Programmers Be Silly
Honestly I think they are the same in term of impact in the spirit and fun they bring to the workplace. The "n/a" versus "ø" discussion will be settled by me sticking to use "n/a" as it's most commonly understood. No need to A/B test it imho. But that's not the point. My point is that it's not "always" required to crack down on silly discussion. I am not saying you should let your guys spend their day discussing that kind of stuff. I am simply don't kill all the fun as long as product is being shipped.

Does that make more sense?

philgo20··on Check out the repos of the Geeklist API Hackers #mtlstartup
We're already praying to have some time to integrate Geeklist API into our platform, such a fun one. 7 wrappers available already...
philgo20··on Show HN - A tweetmeme of its own for every city
Vancouver before Montreal? Does not make any sense :-)
philgo20··on I am so sick of job ads
And any tips on what makes a great job ad? I mean we all work hard to get in touch with great people when you start a project but sometimes you simply have to throw something out there to cast a wider net.
philgo20··on Ask HN: Any companies/products using Hunch API in a meaningful way?
Wow, I thought this would be low... but..
philgo20··on Show HN: Eventivore - Our Submission to the 36 hour Hacka2thon
Where do the events come from?
philgo20··on Why Developers Never Use State Machines
We use FSM to deal with the hiring/applicant flow at http://matchfwd.com

FSM are very common in video games. I've also worked with one in a (very very) big engineering/CAD software when FSM was managing the whole approval/review/audit flow .

It seems there just less common with web dev in general.

philgo20··on My experience as a startup intern
I am not the intern myself, just posted it on his behalf. The startup was a few months old when he started. Both co-founders had years of development experience so I think we gave a pretty good internship experience. I don't think the age of the startup is as important as the people behind it to determine how much an internship will be valuable.

Thanks,

philgo20··on How To Become A Better Programmer By Not Programming
I totally agree with the 'thinking in abstract terms' thing but I would never reduce programming to that. It's not always so abstract.

I tend to think that it'soften good rhetoric skills. A great ability with the three different types of rhetorical proof: ethos, logos, pathos.

philgo20··on Airbnb admits rogue sales team used Craigslist for stealthy property drive
By the amount of emails sent and the similarity of emails, one could guess that they were indeed automated.

Honestly I don't really have a big problem with the tactic as both parties were winning, but I am not buying the 'rogue' sales team explanation.

Great product and business anyway.

philgo20··on Ask HN: Do I Need an Email Platform for all the Individual emails we send?
It seems to be down between PostMark and CritSend as we prefer no monthly fixed fee for now.

Anyone has experienced one against the other ?
