piers··on Design better databases
I really hope you're using SELECT * as an example and that you don't really do that.
piers··on Why you should wear a bow tie.
Damn you. I came here specifically to say the same thing.
piers··on Wordpress.com serves 70k requests/second using Nginx
Don't forget the version of Wordpress that you download is very different from the version that's on Wordpress.com
piers··on BBC adds opt-out statement for cookies
I always thought that the ICO cookie law stuff was opt in, rather than opt-out like the BBC were doing.
piers··on Migrating from EC2 to Rackspace
It seems that they (Rackspace) are just about to launch something that might fix some of the issues that are being talked about: http://www.rackspace.com/blog/next-generation-rackspace-clou...
piers··on Free HTML5 Kindle Book
Just to confirm, it is free (if you're in the UK) but the link above is for the US version which isn't free.
piers··on FuelPHP - The Move to Pagoda Box
You might want do something about the bad security message (or change the above link)
piers··on GigaOM has emailed me 38 times in the last hour
They have posted an apology: http://gigaom.com/2011/12/07/did-someone-order-500-copies-of...
piers··on Julian Assange loses appeal against extradition
And can you link to reliable sources with that stuff?

And there's a different between a rape trial being held in private (see fun2have's post here: http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=3186245) and some secret committee.

Personally, I think there are too many contradictions (like the fact that the stories have changed) for this to be something other than politically motivated. But we shall see.

piers··on Ask HN: Why don't more UK graduates want to join start-ups?
It also might be worth getting in touch with Student Unions as some students might have entrepreneur societies that have final years that would be interested. As well as Math and Computer societies.

Generally I've found that the Unions might be more willing to spread the word to the students than the universities.

piers··on Check Out The New Blue Screen of Death in Windows 8
That as well
piers··on Check Out The New Blue Screen of Death in Windows 8
Looks like they've finally realised that few people read what's on the BSOD so there's no point in displaying it.
piers··on TechCrunch Comment System Kills URLs
I posted the same on the blog post.

I would question that it could be the user (mikecane02)'s browser as it looks to me like what would happen if you didn't support the character set. Could be some linkbaiting on the OP's part.

piers··on Ouch: Google blames customers for features they didn’t bother implementing.
I got confused as well. I thought the Google App Gods had smiled down upon us and enabled profiles. But my happiness was shortlived.
piers··on Ouch: Google blames customers for features they didn’t bother implementing.
Is this error message saying that the admins of domains should be able to turn on Google Profiles? But in fact they can't as it doesn't exist? Have I got that right?
piers··on WHOIS for Twitter
So this is basically a front end for the Google social graph API?
piers··on Ask HN: Where are all the London hackers working on startups?
Where was it advertised? I heard about it on twitter DURING the event, but I would have been interesting in going.

Expand please

Nor is it a crop circle. Looks like a sports track to me.
piers··on [dead]
I'm not having a dig at the site. And I didn't know that about the product token.

Could you not do something with the user agent or do you get that already?

piers··on [dead]
Slightly OT, but is it really that difficult to tell the difference between Windows Server 2008R2 and Windows 7? The linked page doesn't seem to be able to tell the difference between the two.
piers··on [dead]
I hate it when this happens, especially because I read most of my email on my phone and I can't be bothered to go through all that. So I just mark as spam.
piers··on How To Use Amazon EC2 as Your Desktop
Sorry but that seems a lot of effort to go through. Why would you bother?
piers··on Why am I required to pay for both text *and* data. Is it a scam?
Whilst on the subject of it being a scam, who can forget this little nugget of information... http://science.slashdot.org/science/08/05/12/1419204.shtml

The offer of bail money is a bit pointless if the judge hasn't granted bail. I know he's appealing at the moment (I can hear the protesters from my office) but it will be interesting to see if MM puts his money where is mouth is.
piers··on Reddit Founders' YC Application
So how on earth did it get from that to what is currently reddit?
piers··on Why are the Beatles albums cheaper on Amazon than on iTunes?
Not the most helpful answer in the world, but I've generally found Amazon to be cheaper than iTunes, so I don't think that this is really anything new.
piers··on Rate our startup: 42goals.com
This seems to be a very popular thing at the moment. I know of another developer who is currently running something very similar in private beta.
piers··on Ask HN: Best place to register a .ly domain?
I'm assuming there are a lot of people from the US on HN. Wasn't it illegal (until recently - a quick google brings back this: http://www.buyusa.gov/egypt/en/businesslibya.html) to trade with Libya? Would that not include services such as domain names?

Just asking
