pimlottc··on DiscImageStudio: burn visible artwork onto CDs, DVDs and Blu-ray discs
Also, backtracking 5 minutes to pick up the health pack at the start of the level instead of the one right in front of me
pimlottc··on Sneaking into the auditorium for the Windows 2000 launch rehearsal
I remember IR printing, it was nifty! Had some fun with random public printers and my little HP palmtop…
pimlottc··on Digital minimalism
There is definitely a HN bubble, we’re just all in it together
pimlottc··on A Pickpocket's Guide to New York
This article links to their early piece on Apollo Robbins in the first paragraph
pimlottc··on elect.horse
You’re being downvoted because you’re discounting other people’s experiences. The hues are easily distinguished /to you/ but not to everyone.
pimlottc··on Patrick Stewart has died
Same, although there is only 9 years between them despite the 20+ years between their respective series.

Shatner is doing remarkably well for 95 years of age, I saw him performing with a band at a rock show just this summer!

pimlottc··on Capital Wants a Monopoly
Note that the author specified a regulatory agency, not a law. Laws are great, but they need strong and vigilant agents to enforce them.
pimlottc··on Most Americans Say AI Is Bad for Society, Oppose More Data Centers
When AI is jammed into every product and inserted at the top of ever TV search result, adoption isn’t really a choice

pimlottc··on Iosevka is an open-source, sans-serif and slab-serif, monospace font
I had thought that was an intentional animation to show the different weights and variants
pimlottc··on The Lightbulb Computer
It’s just a design concept, the lightbulb projector doesn’t exist. The demo videos were made with a normal projector.
pimlottc··on Programming Isn't Special
as of yet, there’s still no such thing as a print created entirely by a machine. Someone made the scan, prepared the print file, chose the paper stock, proofed the prints. Or at least some of those steps, depending on the print.

The point is, there’s no print that is 1:1 equivalent to an original painting. There are artistic choices embedded throughout the process that influence the result and make one print different than another, which people might consider more or less accurate, or faithful, or beautiful, or artistic.

It’s easy to assume an image is just an image, a bunch of pixels with defined numerical values. But the real world has so much more detail than that.

pimlottc··on Let your AI agents paint big arrows, boxes and text on your screen
Even the example arrows in the first screenshot are wonky and unnaturally weird.
pimlottc··on Sorry, I'm in a meeting
Not getting sucked into YouTube on mobile is a feature, not a bug
pimlottc··on House with 15m underground tunnels for sale for 300k
That’s one big arugula!
pimlottc··on Show HN: I turned my iPhone and a $20 smart plug into an f-stop timer
Sorry, I just meant that the example images /on the website/ should be easier to read, not that the screens in the app themselves should be changed.
pimlottc··on Show HN: I turned my iPhone and a $20 smart plug into an f-stop timer
I’m talking about the promotional website, not the app
pimlottc··on Mallet Head Angle (2011)
I thought it was going to be about drums
pimlottc··on Show HN: Bigwords.page – Turn any screen into a sign. The URL is the app
The URL is the state but clearly there is an actual app here
pimlottc··on Show HN: I turned my iPhone and a $20 smart plug into an f-stop timer
That's fine, just make the versions on the website readable for people who aren't in a darkroom.
pimlottc··on Show HN: I turned my iPhone and a $20 smart plug into an f-stop timer
I get that red-on-black color scheme is a nod to the red lighting of a dark room, but the contrast is so low I can hardly read the example screenshots.
pimlottc··on Find the flattest route between any two points in SF
I understand that “acoustic” is generally the term now but it’s too cutesy and doesn’t make any sense. The difference between e-bikes and normal bikes have nothing to do with how they sound — if anything, a traditional bike is quieter.

I always thought “analog” made more sense and it’s commonly used in other areas.

(Okay, technically you could make an e-bike with completely analog electronics, but I highly doubt anyone does commercially)

There’s even “pushbike” if you want to go way back, though admittedly it sounds rather archaic.

“Acoustic” just sounds like a Portlandia joke.

pimlottc··on After bankruptcy, he was banned from betting sites. Then he discovered Kalshi
I misread the title and thought it said he /founded/ Kalshi, which would have been a hell of a story. The actual title says "discovered", but I guess that doesn't quite fit for HN.
pimlottc··on Multi-connectivity for real-time streaming over Wi-Fi
This is a great result and a very nice visualization. One thing I’d suggest is making it clearer upfront that this requires a computer with multiple WiFi adapters; it’s not mentioned until more than halfway through the article.
pimlottc··on Deutsche Bahn "joke" is no longer funny
For context, the trip taken by the poster is the longest possible rail journey within Europe:

> In August 2026 a new cross border passenger rail connection opened between Tornio in Finland and Haparanda in Sweden. This then allows an uninterrupted rail journey from Kemijärvi in Finnish Lapland to Lagos in Portugal, the two places furthest apart in the EU that can be connected by train. I, Jon Worth, the person who worked this out, aim to be the first person to complete the whole trip, and set the first record time for this journey.

pimlottc··on Show HN: Destroy Any Website with Stickman
Nice, this previous one works on mobile
pimlottc··on Gravity seems holographic. What does that mean for reality?
It’s not just drawing inferences, though; it’s saying you can determine exactly what’s happening in the box. But the pigeonhole principle would suggest there’s far more possible states in the 3-dimension volume than can be unique expressed on the 2-dimensional surface. That’s the part that defies common sense.
pimlottc··on The Board Game of the Alpha Nerds (2014)
Great article, sadly it seems that the footnotes are no longer working
pimlottc··on Transit rewards
