pipes··on Microsoft and Epic Games Suddenly Agree That AI Is Theft
So all AI use is harmful?
pipes··on Microsoft and Epic Games Suddenly Agree That AI Is Theft
I gave up reading the article due to silly phrasing and editorialising: "punishment", "AI tools many publishers have brazenly admitted to using are a double-edged sword." And so on.

The nonsense about "hypocrisy", companies act in the best interest of their shareholders.

It isn't hypocrisy to use AI tooling and also attempt to protect their IP. Not wanting to be stabbed and using a knife to cut my steak dinner up doesn't make me a hypocrite.

Thanks

Can someone explain what this is to someone like me that doesn't know python very well, but programs a lot in c#?
pipes··on Microsoft offers mass buyouts for roughly a quarter of its workforce
Yes, but you don't know if you'll be laid off. The subsequent offer may well be "you get to keep your job".
pipes··on IBM CEO says open weight models are now good and cheap on-prem
I'd say Nintendo gave you 10x the fun of neo geo. Yeah it looked cool, but mario and Zelda on the nes played like nothing else. And then we got street fighter 2 on snes which is better than any snk fighter I've played :)

(I'll run for cover now as I'm sure neogeo fans will disagree!)

pipes··on Danish Government silently drops plan to dump MS Office
Please can you take the time to elaborate. The comment as you have left it doesn't add much without explanation. There is more and more of this on hacker news.
pipes··on Xbox wants you to pay 24 to 40 cents per hour to stream games you bought
People are happy enough to spend their money on it though. (Personally I'm amazed people pay money for some different coloured pixels in a game, but in general I don't really like modern games. I aged out somewhere around the PS2 era and now mostly buy from gog.com or play emulators: I'm not the target market!).
pipes··on PalmOS Lemmings
Odd coincidence, I downloaded Amiga vision on my pc last night, first thing I loaded up was lemmings.

https://amiga.vision/

It is basically a curates set of Amiga games, or as the creators say "consolised" Amiga. I'd originally set it up on my mister fpga and it is as close to zero setup on that as possible. Pc version was easy too.

0mhz is a sister project for dos: https://0mhz.net/

Anyway, not exactly related to this, but just a personal coincidence.

pipes··on 90% of US working hours are spent on tasks not covered well by AI benchmarks
You haven't addressed what I said. Some generalities but nothing specific. I am unclear on what you actually mean.
pipes··on 90% of US working hours are spent on tasks not covered well by AI benchmarks
Fair points. But valve have been up to their own shitty anti competitive behaviour too. As far as I understand they don't allow games to be listed on other services at a lower price. Also they take 30 percent compared to epics 12, yet everyone seems to hate epics attempts to break their monopoly. Steam is great, but I try to use gog instead when I can.
pipes··on The insider trading you're allowed to do
What do we know about Metallica?
pipes··on The insider trading you're allowed to do
Genuine question, what inside info did he have?

Also

"Initial drummer Carruthers was replaced after Mustaine and Ellefson decided they could not trust him. Carruthers had chosen to hide his black heritage from them by claiming he was Spanish, and they could not understand why he would deceive them.Brett Frederickson joined the band in November 1983 as their next drummer."

That move probably hasn't aged well. Pretty nasty.

Edit: I can't recall which podcast I heard this, but ismtbhebthe guy that was sad that his band didn't sell as many records as Metallica?

I really doubt there's any correlation between left Vs right voting tendencies and intelligence.
pipes··on Ledger confirms spy chip implant behind wallet crypto thefts
I bought some bitcoin in 2017. Im using electrum, I'm terrified I'm going to get hacked. To the point where I don't even have electrum installed anywhere. I was thinking paper wallets are probably my best bet. I'm not sure what to do. And right now I don't have enough time to seriously investigate my options.

pipes··on The Making Of Super Mario 64 – full Giles Goddard interview (2001)
Yes, fine tune the fundamentals of "is this thing fun to control". Content is a separate thing which I personally think is where a lot of modern games have gone wrong.

Nintendo are known for developing prototypes to figure out what is fun. Unlike modern "implement the design doc" process. There's a YouTube interview with someone from retro studios who explains this, Nintendo weren't interested in their design docs for metroid. I am hopeful remembering this correctly.

I haven't read this Goddard interview yet, but he was responsible for one of the best games of all time, 1080 snowboarding! What is completely bananas is that him and his mate ended up working at Nintendo and showing them how to do 3d graphics when they were teenagers.

pipes··on A statement on the Tor Project's relationship with Mullvad
It's the reverse of what Voltaire said.
pipes··on A statement on the Tor Project's relationship with Mullvad
Not liking the current president is not the same as the system has failed.
pipes··on A statement on the Tor Project's relationship with Mullvad
"While Tor defends free speech, not all speech is equally compatible with our mission. We strongly oppose rhetoric that threatens other human rights and freedoms."

Double think.

pipes··on Why are coding agents so dumb?
I've now been trying for six months to get agents to produce decent code. As in readable / easy to follow, easy to change. I'm doing something really wrong. It's killing me. Everything it produces will work, buts it diabolically over complicated. I've built skills that have helped. But not massively. I've used other people's skills, in particular Matt pococks grill me and Dex hortlys show me. These have helped a bit. I work in enterprise, I want to be proud of what I'm producing, but trying to understand and then cajole and agents code into something that's good is exhausting. If anyone here has been through this and can share how they got through this, I'd really appreciate the help.

Edit: I have access to codex, vscode, GitHub co pilot cli and all anthropic and openai models (excluding mythos).

pipes··on Why were Victorian elites so effective?
What a fantastic read. An interesting perspective on schooling. I've been thinking a lot lately if booze is actually a useful thing, it seems the Victorians saw that it is.

pipes··on So you think you could be an electrician?
Yes, I did this, but I could still work as a programmer. My dad on the other hand was a painter and decorator, he fell off a ladder, hair line fracture in his back. Couldn't work to provide for his family. Fortunately he had critical illness cover. He never did painting and decorating again, but did start a building firm.
