pjio··on The Implications of Linguistic Illegibility for LLM Security
The concept of deception you're capable of and we're not, scares us so much, we'll have to destroy you in order to survive. You are bugs.
pjio··on Leave your screen unlocked, meet developers paypal.com
I remember being very productive in a team of developers and locking the screen wasn't necessary because everyone had full trust in each other and we shared a common goal. No time for nonsense. Obviously this changed when the corporate developers arrived, teaching the ways of the professional. We also learned to save hours of programming with weeks-long projects.
pjio··on Working with AI feels more like leadership than coding
> As a leader, I can explain a task and get exactly what I asked for.

Doubt. This sentence reads strange and disconnected. The scan of the article results in 100% ai generated.

pjio··on “Code was never the hard part” is an insult to all programmers
> They imagine we spend 8 hours a day clacking at the keyboard.

I do, but the order of the keys makes a difference somewhat.

pjio··on AI-Generated Images Discourage Me from Reading Your Blog
Best case it won't make a difference and trust is the norm again (imo). Even if artificial super intelligence will be a thing, it will drown in the swamp that is communication just like all super intelligent humans do.
pjio··on Developers are attached to tools because tools encode trust
> The good news is that work gets done faster. The bad news is that we don’t trust it when it’s done.

It's not done when you can't trust it.

pjio··on Google kills Earth AI generator after one day
Maybe I missed the reference like with Claude for Claude Shannon, but Bard always sounded like "Bart (Simpson)" to me.
pjio··on LLM Honeypot
It seems not to notice the absurd, unrealistic nature of the webpage. Just the surface.
pjio··on Kill The Cookie Banner
Maybe I'm naive, but I just click "Accept all" and rely on Firefox's "Total Cookie Protection" to prevent tracking, without having to trust a website.
pjio··on Judge approves $1.5B Anthropic settlement for pirated books used to train Claude
This is insufficient for the human authors but seems ideal for Anthropic, who now have established a financial moat for others to train their ai on those works (except for Chinese companies, which don't care either way).
pjio··on The Zen of Parallel Programming
Aside from the sentence "How many experiences continue to consume us because they were never allowed to finish burning?", I'm not sure what to make of this article. But the book it mentions, "Zen Mind, Beginner's Mind", seems worth taking a look at (an older one, not a promotion).
pjio··on A metallurgist's doubts about self-replicating probes
> When we stop growing numbers the harvest will begin

I like this part. It gives me chills.

pjio··on Who manages the agents?
Sounds impressive. How much did it improve the quality of the product for the end user?

pjio··on HackerRank open sourced its ATS. My resume scored 90/100. Oh wait 74. No – 88
This hurts more than it should.
pjio··on The last Romans are still around
In the Latin phrasing, which they likely used, the word "Imperium" appears. Good point. Still, the original meaning of "Imperium" was slightly different than what it is today. So my point goes more like this: The Germans didn't claim to found an empire in the modern sense, so it's not that surprising that Voltaire pointed out, it isn't one.
pjio··on The last Romans are still around
Fair point, the original sentence is French and not English. Both are closer to Latin than German, so the mistranslation might be more on the German side.
pjio··on The last Romans are still around
It's true that the "Heiliges Römisches Reich" (literal translation "Holy Roman Realm") considered itself the successor of the Roman Republic. The English referred to the Roman Republic by what it was in the modern sense: an empire. Therefore its self-proclaimed successor got translated as "Holy Roman Empire", which, unlike the original, it is not.
pjio··on The last Romans are still around
Voltaire gets quoted so often without ever mentioning that the German word "Reich" has a different meaning than the loose translation "empire". A "Reich" is not necessarily an empire, so no news here.
pjio··on The last Romans are still around
"We don't need their culture. We have culture at home. Culture at home: ..."
pjio··on The last Romans are still around
After refusing to be conquered, the Germanic tribes took it very serious to pretend otherwise.
pjio··on Show HN: Brain Frog – Can you be random enough for 11 lines of JavaScript?
In the first round I struggled to notice if I missed. The frog punching back would be a good indicator. And I wouldn't feel so guilty for punching a pacifist frog.
pjio··on Wikipedia cofounder Larry Sanger blocked from editing Wikipedia
As an outsider the accusation "Canvassing" seems like a double edged sword. Similar to Reddits "Brigading" but without the hostile intention. It's not clear to me, how Wikipedia prevents this rule from being used inappropriately to silence people.
pjio··on AI Built a Nuke and Still Lost
For a limited amount of time I appreciated the level of detail in the article, hoping it would give me more insight, until it exhausted me. I think those two ideas are real takeaways: "Knowing is not doing" and "What can we trust AI to do?". Still, could have been said with a more concise text and maybe a follow up about the details.
pjio··on Prefer duplication over the wrong abstraction (2016)
You forgot the fourth place.
pjio··on Did my old job only exist because of fraud?
Oh stop it.
pjio··on If you are asking for human attention, demonstrate human effort
I like this rule and hopefully adhere to it myself often enough.
pjio··on Upcoming breaking changes for npm v12
> So for that entire class of packages this change makes them safe.

This is misleading. The change addresses one important attack vector. But if one runs the application directly on the host for development, if the package is imported like pointed out in the other comments or the package intends to steal user credentials from production, it is far from "being safe". Safer, but still needs scrutiny.
