popmatrix··on Mr. Rogers' music was intricate (2020) [video]
The Atlantic spoke about how intentional Mr. Roger's communication was on his show which is an interesting read: (google cache) https://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:lXyHza...
popmatrix··on Unity’s new pricing: A wake-up call on the importance of open source
The author seems to misunderstand the new pricing model (as did many others; this is Unity's fault) [1]

The $0.20 is not retroactive, nor do you need to hope your users see 10 and impressions to cover a cost to the game developer -- you need to earn $200,000 _and_ have 200,000 installs. A free game would not be charged, and if you don't believe you can muster 10 ad impressions per user (to cover the unity install cost of $0.20), the base cost of the game can be increased by < $0.01 across your 200,000+ sales starting next year when the policy takes effect on new installs.

Thank you, that was a great read.
popmatrix··on The Collectors Who Save Video-Game History from Oblivion
I don't believe the intention was padding the size, given the main shipping format was disks rather than downloads, but perhaps you're thinking of this?

popmatrix··on Porting Zelda Classic to the web
Very neat to see this isn't just a re-implementation but provides some modernization by providing extra menus, and persistent storage. Great work. Helps make me feel a little less bad to download multiple MBs for what would otherwise be a small emulator + 64KB ROM :) edit: typo

RICO is very hard to prove[1] and usually not applicable outside of what most people would undoubtedly agree is organized crime (i.e.a mafia family)

popmatrix··on Quacks of Quedlinburg Deserves Its “Board Game of the Year” Win
Along the same lines in theme with crafting potions for sale, you may find Alchemists [1] enjoyable as it's a game of deduction however you can still press-your-luck once you've reduced possible solutions into a tolerable risk. This allows for very methodical play to be rewarded but still allows those who are willing to gamble for leg up which can be a fun dynamic to balance.

One recommendation if you do play is to download the companion app. The game in essence requires a third-party player to validate potions with hidden solutions for the other palyers. The app takes care of role so everyone involved can be playing the game.

popmatrix··on Firefox Experiments I Would Have Liked to Try
It would be great to signify a browser window as my main window where new tabs are opened rather than using the last focused. Alternatively, I would take a way of blacklisting a window from letting new tabs be opened. As more and more apps become web-apps, I like having the apps open in multiple windows on one monitor and use another monitor for web _browsing_. Having new tabs open, hiding my email, jira, docs, etc... is a small annoyance but one that would be great to have remedied.
popmatrix··on What happens before main() is executed in C and why is it important?
It should be noted that relying on static initialization as suggested in the article, while at times useful, can open a new set of problems until initialization order is well-defined (it's out of scope for the article, so I imagine the author is aware and just opting for brevity). Some compilers provide an explicit ordering mechanism (clang and GCC) and the there are proposals in the C++ standards at the moment, but until then relying on static initialization is something one should think about potentially solving differently. Depending on the architecture, there tends to also be well-defined hooks for functions to run pre and post-main which is another consistent model for initialization/shutdown.

Edit: spelling

~0u is also a safe equivalent if there is unwarranted fear around wrapping.
popmatrix··on King County rolls out Miranda rights tailored for young people
I agree with the clarification of the Miranda for youths who may not fully understand it as it is recited today.

From the article, "We put kids in jail and that could ruin their life, so we need to be really careful about when and how we do that.” This is a very important point and I hope they do not stop at clarifying Miranda rights. Extending the approach of helping youths lacking 'perspective and judgement', I'd hope for further investigation into the effects of reducing sentences of minor crimes for youths as well.

popmatrix··on Do Not Eat, Touch, or Even Inhale the Air Around the Manchineel Tree
Correct. The Galapagos have many of these trees and all are marked on paths.

The article did not mention it, but the poison severity of the tree varies quite a bit with season. Once the fruit has all fallen, the milky irritant on the tree has dried or washed off. You should still avoid staying under them in the rain as mentioned above.

popmatrix··on Test predicts which children will grow up to be drain on society
It's quite hard to take anything objective from this article. Unless I missed it, I don't see any link to the source material and there is no mention of what the specifics of the test were, or the sample (aside from the sample size). The three links provided on the article are links to mentioned universtiy landing pages or a link to another Telegraph article regarding a /different/ study.

It would be interesting to see the details of the study to determine if there is potentially more of a link to some other criteria (e.g. wealth) than the test questions themselves (which are never mentioned).

popmatrix··on 22nd Dec aka the EA Massacre: Why we are skipping it
What's the difference if it's EA, Ubisoft, Apple etc... Nothing is preventing a holiday price drop for bitongo which could be outweighed by the author's projected increased holiday sales. Further, a good app will rise above shovelware appropriately. Is this really a detrimental scenario for a start-up?
